12017-07-28 16:20:14 UTCtekim Hi Raymond, I noticed that you are editing the names of peaks to include the elevation in feet. You probably were not aware of this, but the name tag is for the name only[1]. Elevation should be placed in the ele tag[2]

22017-09-07 20:38:39 UTCRaymo853 Hello. I would argue the elevation is part of the name.
32017-09-07 20:39:02 UTCRaymo853 It is often the most useful information for peaks.
42017-09-07 21:21:41 UTCtekim Raymond, Yes, the elevation information is very useful for peaks, but it belongs in the ele tag, and in most cases, is already included in that tag. We should not tag for the renderer. If you would like the elevation in feet to show up on the standard rendering, perhaps submit a pull request for...
52017-09-07 21:33:19 UTCtekim I posted this question to the tagging mailing list to get input from the wider community. I would have cc'ed you, but I don't think I have your email address. You might want to subscribe to that list if you are not already in order to participate in the discussion and explain your point of view.
62017-09-07 21:50:03 UTCn76 Putting the elevation in the name field is flat out wrong. Elevation should be in the ele=* field and the renderer can, if the developer of the renderer desires, be shown along with the name.

Consider that this data and the maps made from it could be used by a person desiring metric elevations. Y...
72017-09-07 21:52:54 UTCRaymo853 Is it possible to have the elevation in the proper tag but have tags for both SI and English units?
82017-09-07 21:54:33 UTCmvexel Hi Raymo853 -- tekim is correct, you want to use the `ele` tag to note the elevation. The information in OpenStreetMap needs to be a little bit structured for everyone to be able to make sense of it. That is why we separate the names of things out in one tag, and have other useful information go int...
92017-09-07 21:56:34 UTCRaymo853 I was adding the elevation in meters to the tag, but also adding it in feet to the name. I do not understand how having more info in the name field can cause such chaos.
102017-09-07 21:59:35 UTCmvexel It's not chaos :) It's just that people expect a name when they query the name tag, just as they would expect to see elevation (in meters) when they query the ele tag. Anyone who wants to create a map with elevation in feet prominently displayed can query the ele tag and do the conversion. Having el...
112017-09-07 22:02:29 UTCRaymo853 Thanks for the clarification mvex*. It just seemed other were making remarks without understanding I was putting meters into the elevation tag and thereby was causing all sorts of terror and heartache for all users.
122017-09-07 22:06:47 UTCn76 "I do not understand how having more info in the name field can cause such chaos." -- Because it is not expected and hard for a renderer to remove. If I create a map of an area you tagged this way the elevation will be shown twice (with different formatting). In addition, lots of people do...
12017-08-30 12:32:38 UTCSpanholz Why did you add those unconnected sidewalks here? They can't be used by routing engines. Wouldn't it be better to go the other way around and tag roads were pedestrians are not allowed?
22017-08-30 14:27:34 UTCmvexel Hi Spanholz. I map what's there on the ground, not for any specific application / service. People looking at the map can see at a glance that there are sidewalks they can use, something I think is valuable. Where connections to the road network exist, I will map them as such.
12017-07-17 16:13:33 UTCmvexel Thanks for helping clean up OSM. It would be nice if you could add a more descriptive changeset comment in the future to help other mappers understand more easily why a change was reverted. Thank you!
22017-07-17 19:14:56 UTCuser_5359 Hello mvexel! Did you read http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/50340061 ? What can I do better?
32017-07-17 19:35:48 UTCmvexel Hi, no I didn't see that comment, and I think that is great. Perhaps you can put the same comment in the changeset where you revert the change, then it's easier to discover. Thanks again for helping clean up OSM in my area. What tool did you use to find this bad node? I tried an Overpass query and f...

12017-04-28 10:38:28 UTCsimonap_telenav Hi,
I've noticed that you modified the highway tags from motorway_link to service, but I'm not sure I understand why. Could you give me some information regarding this?
Thanks,
Simona
22017-04-28 14:56:45 UTCmvexel When an exit is unsigned / only accessible to maintenance or enforcement this is a common way to tag it. That seems to be the case here: http://openstreetcam.org/details/8846/116
32017-05-05 13:15:59 UTCsimonap_telenav Ok, thank you for the clarification!
12017-04-25 15:44:18 UTCscruss Hey, you *can't* use the city's open data for turn restrictions. The data licence isn't compatible with OSM.

Please revert these changes and any that used the city's data. We're working closely with the city to get the data usable, but we're not there yet.
22017-04-27 15:08:21 UTCmvexel Hi scruss -- you contacted me through email about this as well. We won't use the city data any longer untill we resolve this together.
12017-04-25 13:54:41 UTCchadbunn There is newer inamgery for this area than Bing and Mapbox. Local Utah imagery from 2016 and there is most definitely a park here. I will capture with Mapillary today. In the future please refrain from deleting before you have contacted me about an error in this area.
22017-04-25 13:58:05 UTCpoornibadrinath Hi,
Yeah, sorry about that. I deleted thinking it was not there, but very quickly realised that I had made a mistake. I am trying to revert my chnageset, but somehow it was not happening. I will revert my changeset. Thanks for notifying me about this.
Best,
Poornima
32017-04-25 14:01:05 UTCchadbunn Here is proof of the building: https://www.mapillary.com/app/?lat=41.05898662628968&lng=-111.96608631248533&z=15.694566360039444&pKey=LeOn6x3FubSkEj3JSBu38g&focus=photo

I appreciate the interest in this area, but do you have any local knowledge of Layton, UT or are you just doing ...
42017-04-25 14:09:21 UTCchadbunn NAIP Imagery from earlier this month also indicates a building here. Even Google Maps or Earth clearly indicate a building here. If you are unable to revert I will just add it back in.
52017-04-25 14:17:26 UTCpoornibadrinath Hi,
Thanks for all the clarification. I realised it when I checked it myself the second time. I was verifying newly added parks due to random edits by new mappers. Since Bing and Mapbox both didn't show the park and the park changeset had the imagery source listed as Bing, I deleted it as I could...
62017-04-25 20:30:06 UTCchadbunn This building has been verified on Mapillary.
72017-04-26 06:50:18 UTCpoornibadrinath Right, got it. Got it verified on the most recent Mapbox satellite imagery as well. The changeset has been reverted: https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/48128984#map=19/41.05891/-111.96633. Thanks for bringing this to my notice.

82017-04-26 20:23:03 UTCmvexel chadbunn, do you have JOSM configured to use Utah AGRC imagery? I have tried and failed :( I would love to be able to use it in JOSM!
92017-04-27 03:56:04 UTCfreebeer Just to butt in, without knowing the contents of the other imagery sources, I can verify that both building and park are present in the (degraded) USGS Large Scale Imagery background in Potlatch2, although only at zoom levels 16 and server-side scaled to zoom 20, with nothing for me from 17-19 here....
12017-04-24 13:38:56 UTCmvexel Hi wrk3,

I am curious why you delete a railway platform mapped as an area, which is valid tagging, and replace it with a way? To my mind this reduces the quality of the map.
12017-04-18 23:09:06 UTCmvexel Hi Angel Collins,
Some of the things you added to OpenStreetMap don't seem to exist in reality. Please only add things to OpenStreetMap that exist and can be verified to others. OpenStreetMap maps and data are used by millions of people who rely on the data being accurate.

12017-04-14 17:39:00 UTCmvexel Hey there! Thanks for your contributions to OSM. I am not 100% sure but the things you added look like sports pitches to me (baseball perhaps?) If this is the case, please look at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:sport and consider tagging these areas `leisure=sport` and `sport=baseball` (or w...
12017-04-12 02:49:03 UTCfranta prochazka For some reason, my edits are not becoming part of the open street map. Can somebody explain why?
22017-04-12 04:41:16 UTCmvexel Hi! Your trail is in the OpenStreetMap database, but some things are not displayed on the main map, only on specialized maps that use OSM data. Nordic / XC trails are among those specialized things that don't appear on the main map. You can see your trail for example on OpenSnowMap: http://www.opens...

22017-03-31 03:48:49 UTCJack the Ripper It is. The press conference I just saw says the closures will be even more extensive than I thought. Updating OSM accordingly, but this is a traffic disaster.
12017-03-21 21:28:19 UTCmvexel Hey there! Welcome to OSM. I noticed that you added a Castle in St George. I can't see a castle at that location, it looks like a residential area. Did you mean to add something else? Let me know how I can help.

12017-03-10 21:24:10 UTCmvexel Hi iLummox -- the edits you made on OSM don't seem to map to any current features that can be observed on the ground. OSM is a map of the world as we can observe it in the present day. Do you have specific local knowledge about these features? Could you elaborate?
