Suburb node "Cutteslowe" https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/14191310 within suburb relation "North Oxford" https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/13046270 (which has a proper label node of its own). The hierarchy's gone a little odd if that's happening. Idk if North Oxford should encompass Oxford North. Should Wolvercote contain Wolvercote Cemetary? Perhaps Summertown, Sunnymead, and Cutteslowe should be promoted to suburbs (ideally if we can figure out the boundaries - Cutteslowe should be easy, given its history) Or should Cutteslowe be downgraded to an OSM quarter?
2~ 1 year agocommentedgmar5
♦559
I would be in favour of upgrading Summertown to a suburb, given its prominence in local use and its own retail centre. North Oxford can be limited to the more central southern part. Cutteslowe would remain a suburb (note that it extends to the south of the A40). Sunnymead should remain a lower tier, quarter is probably fine (nested, I am not sure, within Cutteslowe or Summertown, or both — city neighbourhoods are not and don't need to be always very precise). The area between the railway/Woodstock Road and Banbury Road is a bit of a no man's land in my mind. I would say that (Upper) Wolvercote ends at the railway line. Wolvercote Cemetery is in Cutteslowe now. Not sure about the Blandford/Davenant/etc. part (it could be Sunnymead?). Too early to say about Oxford North. The canal-side can be Wolvercote. The rest could be Peartree or its own small neighbourhood-tier place. I am happy to sort out these edits, but I'd welcome points of views, given the uncertain nature of the matter.
3~ 3 months agoclosedgmar5
♦559
I've updated this, going for these boundaries: Cutteslowe https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/19756980 Summertown https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/19756982 Sunnymead remains a quarter, now within Summertown. North Oxford https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/19756981 Now including only the proper North Oxford. Waterside and Trap Grounds, on the West side of the canal, are out of it, for now. Not sure if I should include them. I'll mark it as resolved, but feel free to reopen if you had comments.

There are two buildings that have been named "Bush House" in OSM here: * https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/958402647 * https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/958622161 Both are tagged as detached houses. One has a defib mapped suggesting it's a parish council office rather than a house. Presumably there aren't two Bush Houses here, but which one is correct? #surveyme

Address interpolations cannot run along the outside of a building, and these addresses will not work correctly. These need an interpolation way instead, leading from somewhere near the main entrance to "inside", away from the main entrance to convey corect meaning, if we can't go inside and find where all the corridors and staircases really are :) Separate stairway-exclusive address ranges work similarly, if there's an external door to the siaircase. See Cooper House and Marina House for how it's supposed to be done. Since these are street addresses, not flat addresses, the house name is unneccessary for the address. The only alternatives is addr:place and addr:parentstreet, but that's very counterintuitive. It is sufficient if all the addresses as interpolated are within the building outline. addr:housename has the same level of meaning as addr:housenumber. It is not subordinate.
2~ 4 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
The wiki at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Addresses#Interpolation says: > Some mappers use addr:interpolation=* on a single object to indicate that its addr:housenumber=* is to be treated as a range rather than an atomic label (discussed above). There is not a consensus on whether this is appropriate. I am one of those mappers. The interpolation tag on the same object as the number range is clean and makes perfect logical sense. Since there is no consensus and both methods are documented, I don't think we can say that it "cannot go" there or how it is "supposed to be done". Creating a fictional interpolation segment, where numbers are in fact not between the two physical locations, looks like tagging for the renderer (or search engine) in my opinion. If the search engine cannot find an address, it is a problem of the engine, not necessarily of the tagging method. On your second point, addresses here look like this: FLAT 2, COOPER HOUSE, WILLIAM MORRIS CLOSE, OXFORD, OX4 2DE It happens that the flat numbers also seem to follow the street numeration, so addr:housenumber might be more useful than addr:flats, but in any case the building name should be part of the address, and addr:housename seems more appropriate and intuitive than addr:parentstreet.

The name "Duke's Lake" is being clearly used, for example by the estate agent who is advertising its sale, and in press reporting about it (The Independent, Oxford Mail). https://www.carterjonas.co.uk/land/for-sale/wolvercote/oxr240004 https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/24423160.opportunity-buy-private-lake-outskirts-oxford/ https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/lake-wild-swimming-for-sale-wolvercote-pit-duke-b2576610.html These are quite recent, so I cannot exclude that they were also influenced by OSM. I added the name a few years ago, after seeing it used. It seems that T.C. Pit was used years ago, mostly by anglers. "Wolvercote Pit" is another name. I will add them as alt_name.

same question for the other nearby islands as well tbh
3~ 9 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
Do you mean that we should tag these areas, currently used as inner elements of the river Cherwell water multipolygon, as place=islet? (They are too small to be islands). I suppose we could, but I am not sure that it is helpful. It is just land surrounded by different rivers and ditches, which is quite common in the floodplain. If they had a proper name (like Osney Island), it would be different.
4~ 9 months agocommentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
place=islet doesn't have to be an inner relation in complex circumstances such as this btw. My question was really - is this an island with a name as opposed to a patch of land that just so happens to be enclosed by water, hence the name "Water Meadow" (which doesn't take up the full extent of the 'island') If we were to look at the East Midlands I'm sure there are many similar plots of farmland enclosed by drains, and I wouldn't argue that they were islets, but given we're looking at Oxford I just thought maybe the collegiate would name these islands - does that make sense?
5~ 9 months agocommentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
Tangentially, I would argue (pending verification) that Magdalen College don't own the waterways and should be split across them (multipolygon outer relations), in the same way it's split over "High Street" to the south https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/12605258
6~ 9 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
Re your first point, I think "Water Meadow" is the name of the "meadow" element. Perhaps originally it was fully enclosed by water. Now, it is fenced off, and surrounded by a compacted-ground path, it does not reach the water. I think it looks fine as is. The larger area could be tagged as an islet, if you want. Your second point is something we can try to verify, you are probably right (should bridges be included, though?).
7~ 9 months agocommentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
I think it would make sense to have a place=islet as it would re-affirm "this is where the water ends", especially if someone is looking at an OSM-derived map without footpaths. Whether it's noname=yes or has some identifier produced by a government survey or Oxford geologian (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/geologian) from the pre-modern era would be a detail that could be captured after this note is closed. To the contrary of my second point, the OSMUK Cadastrel Parcels don't have a boundary for Magdalen College. I would expect there to be a border between freehold vs crown land, as is the case with the kings highway and major rivers. Maybe Magdalen College does indeed own the water. This would be a niche detail to capture but thinking ahead, if OSM were to be used by kayakers etc to establish where they can go with a Waterways Licence, knowing that the college owns the water would be useful, especially if they have the right to close them to waterway traffic.

♦559
I added place=islet on these 3 elements: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/176768213 https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/95658269 https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/46671729 I think we can leave the rest as it is, for now. There are historical records of ownership of both waters and fishing of the Cherwell, so it is very possible that is the same for the colleges, who own or owned most of the land in Oxford, acquired from the dissolution of monasteries and enclosures. (However, I do find the lack of clarity on the cadastral map for Magdalen a bit puzzling.) For access by users on the waterways, tags on the rivers themselves will be the best way of representing that, regardless of ownership and of the shape of the area the cut through. (You can close the note if you think it is resolved. Thanks).

It's small pieces of grit, held together by something, but I need to go back to really check what it is. I think it would be worth discussing adding a 'non-slip' value to the surface key. The main quality of the surface here is not exactly what it's made of but the fact it's grippy.

The middle #-shape of sidewalks need adding here, along with crossings where peoplw would actually cross. Also need to check tags, since I think footway=sidewalk is missing from a lot of them, and there were a few sidewalk=separate tags on the sidewalks themselves. Honestly, this is probably too much detail for most residential estates while we're still getting the pavements mapped on major roads. I'll still be prioritising those over this area. They do join up the park, shops, churches, and major road though, and this old 1930s(?) estate at least has interestingly shaped pavements to map.
2~ 7 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
Hi. I just wanted to note that sidewalks need to be regularly linked to the roads, even if there are no technical crossings (maybe at intersections? unless crossing is explicitly impossible), otherwise routing becomes impossibles — and therefore it would be a case of higher level of micro-mapping actually producing worse usability.
3~ 7 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
I know. I'm prioritising major roads at the moment precisely because we can devote some extra routing thought to them, between crossings. It often needs a bit of on the ground checking to make sure you're choosing a natural place, however. Perhaps even people-watching for a bit to see how people do cross. ------------------ At the risk of hijacking this note, how do you feel about establishing some vague criteria for when to put a hint in? Q1: Which tags to use? Perhaps we could settle on (for the way) highway=footway footway=link (for the crossing) highway=crossing crossing=informal note=(some note about evidence) At reasonably verifiable natural place (whatever that means). That gives somewhere for Street Complete users to hang kerbstone details, anyway. Q2: How far apart should hint-crossings be? Perhaps we could say that if a stretch is over 50 metres between formal crossings, that's too much and we need to hint the router? Example where we can add something beyond what the intersecting roads give: https://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=51.748442&mlon=-1.257894#map=19/51.748442/-1.257894&layers=N (perhaps two, one near the bus stop and one to the east of the marker somewhere, if people cross there?) or to join up and de-island-ify these long traffic-islandish pseudo-pavement stepping stones between the two formal crossings at Summertown, where everybody who can seems to use those to cross, despite how busy the road gets https://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=51.748442&mlon=-1.257894#map=19/51.777822/-1.265112&layers=N (perhaps one hint at each end of the island?)
4~ 7 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
Alternative scheme 1: (crossing way) highway=footway footway=crossing crossing=informal (for the crossing) highway=crossing crossing=informal Alternative 2: Low formality. Don't bother tagging the node, and (for the crossing way) highway=footway footway=link (but with short stretches of leader sidewalk that might cause StreetComplete to ask about kerbs. Or it might not. I should test this)
5~ 7 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
To take this area where the note is as an example: I'd say that there are informal crossings continuing straight from the pavements parallel to Croft Road, when they curve inside the cul-de-sacs. These would be an informal crossing on both way and node (Alt. 1). However, at the end of the cul-de-sacs, the pavement needs connecting to the turning circles (on the two sides, since they look Y shaped). That would be a link, not a crossing (Alt. 2).
6~ 7 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
(Actually, there seem to be yellow lowered kerbs here, so it would be unmarked, not informal, in this case, but I hope my general point is clear.)
7~ 7 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
This is how I'd do it: https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/168318234 Can you check that it makes sense? That said, I'd agree with your first post, that separate mapping is not worth it for most residential roads.
8~ 7 months agoclosedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
Looks about right. I've had a go at carrying through the same idea based on a little survey this evening. * There are arguably links inside the car parking blocks, but in practice they're difficult to use because the cars are in the way. * Obviously a lot has happened over the years, and some of the footpaths linking house to road have been converted into driveways. The driveways still serve as foot links, however. Anyway, that's probably it for this bit. Still too much detail for a residential area, but at least it's better detail now!

I asked at the Sandford Lock House about it and they said it was likely be unusable for somewhere between a "month to a year" while being checked and appropriate repairs performed. note sure if/how to indicate this on the map, noting closure until Jan 2026 might be reasonable?

A number of "School Streets" have been introduced in Oxford — one of them here — with traffic restrictions during two time periods, in the morning and afternoon, except residents and some other categories. For more info: https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/residents/roads-and-transport/school-streets I think the restrictions can be represented with: motor_vehicle:conditional=permit @ (08:00-09:00; 14:30-15:30) Times vary depending on zones. We also need to identify the exact extent of the zones. Street names are listed on the website above (the whole street, or are signs in specific points?). Technically, restrictions only apply to inbound traffic. If we wanted to be pedantic, maybe it could be represented with motor_vehicle:forward:conditional=* or motor_vehicle:backward:conditional=* on the specific access points, but perhaps the simpler solution to the whole road is better.
2~ 9 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
Even residents need to apply for a permit, so motor_vehicle:conditional=permit@(...) seems like the right tag. Let's do it that way. I suggest marking the positions roughly - perhaps just the school - from the council list in Notes, tagging them all with #OxonSchoolStreets2025 and a link to https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/4671909 for "the decision". The hashtag means they'll show up on Anton's notes viewer (https://antonkhorev.github.io/osm-note-viewer), and the link will help explain the work we have to do. Let me know if you'd like me to do the pin drops, or I can this evening. The search: https://antonkhorev.github.io/osm-note-viewer/#mode=search&q=%23OxonSchoolStreets2025&bbox=-1.3924%2C51.6545%2C-1.0995%2C51.8675&sort=created_at&order=newest&closed=0&map=12/51.7240/-1.2540

Sure, feel free to make notes, if you think that's helpful. I can edit the streets, when I have time. We should also record something on the road elements themselves. What is the best way? Maybe: note:motor_vehicle:conditional=description of the school street source:motor_vehicle:conditional=county council website
4~ 9 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
The information there is copyrighted, owned by Oxfordshire County Council: https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/council/about-website/terms-and-conditions. On the same page, they deny any responsibility loss resulting for its misuse, so yeah. Anyway, we can't use it directly, because that would be Stealing (which would be Bad.) We can drop Note pins and suggest confirmatory visits, though, I think that's a valid way of working with public domain knowledge. Big question: what's actually on the ground for these things? If people are liable to fines for crowding school entrances with cars, you'd expect a sign, at least. Maybe I'll use this one as a test of whether we can actually do anything for these zones, if I finish Osney Mead this weekend. If there is nothing on the ground, we could ask the council produce a waiver of the tabular data on the webpage, for the sake of public mapping. The restriction info should somehow have a link back to the council website too. I'd suggest a boundary relation like https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/17748798 for each one, as a place to hang a link back to the official source, plus restrictions on the roads inside the zones.
5~ 9 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
Yes, on the ground there definitely are very clear signs for the restriction. This one is the one I know for sure. A link to the council website, for more information, is what I meant. If not source, what would be an appropriate tag for that? The relation seems overkill, and maybe not even that appropriate since it isn't a full-fledged limited traffic zone.
6~ 9 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
I'm OK with not adding the complexity of a boundary relation, for now. We could adopt url:restrictions and description:restrictions from the wiki for the additional details. How to represent that they're only active on weekdays, during term time?

I've added Notes with tags for the work needing to be done. ♦559
This should do it: motor_vehicle:conditional=permit @ (Mo-Fr 08:00-09:00, 14:30-15:30; SH off) For the additional information, those look like proposals with no use. I think suffixes on the related key might be more in line with other common uses: motor_vehicle:description=* motor_vehicle:url=*

♦811
Whoops, added. Feel free to adjust the descriptions if it makes more sense that way, and I'll do other ones the same way when I get around to it. From what I saw last night, the best approach is a site visit informed by the council list. Sometimes the boundaries need clarification, sometimes roads have just been omitted on the ground (Baltic Wharf, as a case in point). So, we've clarified what to do, trialled the approach. The other markers say where the work needs doing, and link back here for the why. I think that's enough to close this Note, and let the other ones be worked on separately when mappers have the time. Thanks!

Just thinking this through: this is only one of two lifts, and it needs to be checked against other signage, all escalators, and the lifts near TK Maxx first before we change anything. This one suggests a scheme like: level=2 level:ref=RT (maybe) level=1 level:ref=UG level=0 level:ref=LG level=-1 level=-2 I'm suggesting we migrate current level names to https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:level:ref and make level=* all numeric.
3~ 9 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
doh. level:ref=UG above should read G of course. otherwise, the refs on the 2 notes are the same, and I've just checked they're consistent with each other, for the avoidance of all doubt
4~ 9 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
Yes, we should move those labels to level:ref. However, level=0 is level:ref=G in the southern half, but level:ref=UG in the northern half. That reflects reality based on external ground level, but introduces inconsistency within the shopping centre.
5~ 9 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
The image in the top-left here https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:level seems to suggest that numbering should reflect the outside ground level, not the internal floors.
6~ 9 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
I must gather a few more photos as evidence before I start fiddling, particularly if the northern half (just North Avenue, I guess?) actually uses a different scheme, like you say! Argh.
7~ 9 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
The scheme used internally is the same everywhere, and we can tag it straightforwardly in level:ref (most nodes already have that info in 'level', we just need to move it). What will be different is the corresponding OSM numeric 'level', i.e. there is no definite identity between a level and a level:ref. The upper ground floor level:ref=UG will be a level=0 in North Arcade, approaching from Bonn Square, but further south G will be 0 and UG is 1. (The Sainsbury's is in limbo, I guess.)
8~ 9 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
level:ref=UG can't really be level=0 for the North Arcade building: the presence of the emergency exits at the lowest usable ground level, not to mention Globe News, "pin" it to the exact same level:ref=* and level=* scheme and mapping as the rest of the complex (unexpected, but verifiable) Sainsbury's is clear-ish once you follow the line of whitewashed brickwork around the building, along Roger Bacon Lane down to Greyfriars Place. As a separate building, its lowest usable entrance is its loading dock down in Greyfriar's Place (shared with Superdry). That's also the lowest proper exposed wall, since level=0 doesn't really require a door. Pics: https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/4738767 I think it's fairly straightforward, and consistent too, now that I've done the legwork ;) I'm perfectly happy to call the Bonn Square entrance and the shops on North Arcade {layer=1, layer:ref=UG} Ref: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:level#Values
9~ 9 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
The Bonn Square entrance (which is also used the most) absolutely is level=0, since it is levelled with the street and the ground. It cannot be level=1. See this figure: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:MarekUserDefinedBuildingLevels.jpg It doesn't matter if elsewhere there are lower levels. Bonn Square into North Arcade is equivalent to the part on the left of the figure. The map you posted here is helpful, in my opinion. https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/4738820 Where LG exists, LG=0, G=1. Where LG doesn't exit (most of North Arcade), G=0
10~ 9 months agocommentedgmar5
♦559
(The Sainsbury's makes sense, since you go up at least half a level for the entrance).
11~ 9 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
The Bonn Square entrance absolutely is level=1 because the lowest *wall of any floor above ground* of the Northernmost building of the Westgate, the "North Arcade" one, is *way* below Bonn Square. The shops inside the entrance cannot be anything other than level=1 because you have to go up steps or the long and sloping Castle Street or St Ebbes to get up to them. Please look at the diagram on https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:level#Values again. This one: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Building-levels.png. For now, I have resolved this in the standard way. I draw your attention to the wording "an entrance=* located on the right of C will be tagged with level=1" That said, there's no reason why a threshold pedestrian area cannot be level=0 at one end to match the street and level=1 at the other to match the building. I'm specifically referring to https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1318381951, which I consider transitional between the outer street-based numbering, and the inner, building-based numbering. If you were to flip it so that North Arcade (the building) had its layer=0 at Bonn Square (wrong according to the docs), you'd be breaking all the escalators between UG and G around Church Lane. A down escalator tagged level=0;0 + level:ref=UG;G just feels like a worse compromise to me!
12~ 9 months agoclosedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
Anyway, I've fixed this to my own satisfaction. I'll leave https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/4738820 open for a bit though to see if we can come up with a consensus about the Bonn Square transition and level for outer-edge doors, or North Arcade as a whole. (I've also added the highway=pedestrian ways on UG for routing lying south of Middle Square. They should be connected with escalators now, but not lifts or stairs yet - I don't think the South Arcade UG-G stairs are even mapped yet.)

Thanks for pointing out the alt_name on https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/8125937 . The northern section (Grove Walk, or Grove Passage) is operated by Merton, which wouldn't call it "Merton Grove" (Grove is also the nearby building, to add to the confusion). However, it seems that it is referred to as such by others, so perhaps we can add Merton Grove as another alt_name (a loc_name?). The southern section (Merton Grove, operated by Christ Church) is probably also referred to as Merton Walk. We can be added as an alt_name.

I added an alt_name. - Grove Walk (Grove Passage; Merton Grove) - Merton Walk (Merton Grove). Merton Grove is now the alt_name to both sections of the path that goes from Broad Walk to Merton Street.

Is this area flooded often enough to be tagged as a wet_meadow?
2~ 1 year agocommentedgmar5
♦559
Possibly. It is usually flooded for 2-3 months in winter, like many other meadows in the flood plain. I don't think that's enough to make it a wet meadow. If, however, it remains waterlogged for longer, and has typical wetland grasses and other flora, than it would be. The threshold between a meadow and a wet-meadow is not precise. From satellite images, the Southern half looks different, and comparable to other wet-meadows, but it might also be due simply to mowing/grazing practices? Perhaps we assess it in person in the next couple of months as spring comes.

I checked a couple of days ago. There was some flooding of the south-east edge of both meadows, from overspilling of the two ditches. Relatively minor, though. Difficult to judge other characteristics from afar, but I'd be inclined to say that the simple meadow tag is better.

I think it looks mostly dry. If it isn't waterlogged at the end of winter, I doubt it could be a wet_meadow for most of the year.

instead of "staircase 14" etc, maybe these should be addr:unit or something?

I don't think so, personally. I think Staircase {n} is more accurate as the name of the building, and it is used as such. The use of an address tag (even if it lead to cleaner rendering) seems inappropriate for college staircases, which don't have addresses as such.

It hinges on where the post goes, at least for addr:*. Do letters and parcels to students go to the porter's lodge, or to a mail room or something similar, or would they direct the delivery bod to a staircase? name=* is probably right if that's what people call each block, or if it's written at the entrance.

All post goes to the lodge. The college will have a single official address, which should be tagged on the amenity=university overall object. Individual college buildings don't have their own addresses (unless they are houses part of a regular street sequence, and later absorbed into a college), so they shouldn't have an addr tag. "Staircase X" is the name used to refer to the buildings, both officially and in practice. I'm closing this note (but feel free to reopen if you wish to discuss further). P.S. there are a couple of colleges in the city centre which have been recently edited to use addr:unit tags, I will revert them back to the full name when I can.
