I've seen photos of a trail around it, but also of a cycle barrier right next to the gate. Some of the photos have the gate as yellow; others grey. Seems to me that the gate could be tagged as for vehicles only, private, and usually locked. And assuming the cycle barrier is still there, add that as a separate way, with a cycle barrier node on it. The cycle barrier: barrier=cycle_barrier cycle_barrier=tilted access=no bicycle=dismount foot=designated (or perhaps just yes) The gate: barrier=gate access=private locked=yes colour=yellow

It's not like a tag page where you clearly need to define what the tag represents and how it should be used. The tag page for leisure=track clearly states that it is for non-motorized sports and precised the description with "cycling" since 2017 or 2018. The MTB page also clearly adds that highway=path or =track are suitable because sometimes portions of the course or entire trails are shared with other type of users in the bike centre or trail network (Bentonville, Pisgah, Whistler...). The combination is therefore acceptable by practical usage, and many examples exist where leisure=track is paired with various highway= values: www.openstreetmap.org/way/596234642 , www.openstreetmap.org/way/596234638 , www.openstreetmap.org/way/562480597 Hence why I proposed the combination, at least there will be a clear difference. Although, I personally have always avoided combining with highway=cycleway (like in our example here), preferring highway=path + bicycle=designated but the rendering will be the same anyway.

It runs north-east - south-west across the path, parallel to westwood/perpendicular to the footpath. The gate is locked unless SCC Park Rangers want to use it. There are pedestrian-sized gaps on either side of it (you can fit a bike down it, and I think you could fit a wheelchair). These are always-open to the public. I'd like to map the gate as a path rather than a node, but the wiki says that needs to be attached to a fench on either side. I wonder if I can attach it to a pair of `barrier=entrance` nodes on either side? Otherwise I'll have map the wall behind the properties and the fence around the gas plant, and attach it+entrance to those.

My idea re: mapping it differently, is to indicate that... in effect there is gate surrounded by two gaps, rather than a gate across the whole path that can be opened by a pedestrian. In hindsight - it [the gate itself] would still be a node not a way, and just have two ways surrounding it? But now that I think about all of this, I can see that yes - this is in effect tagged/mapped correctly. Anyone who sees this as "oh there's a gate, but pedestrians can go through (foot=yes) will just have a nice surprise when they actually come to it. Happy to close.
