While officially closed, it seems to be a "use at your own risk" situation in practice. It's clear that people are using it. Maybe access=permissive or access=discouraged would be appropriate?

I heard these bike lanes were upgraded with concrete barriers. Need to stop by in person to confirm the extent of the barriers: do they go all the way from 1st Ave NE to Ashworth Ave N?
2~ 2 months agocommentedpesticides
♦125
Concrete barrier goes from from Meridian Pl N to Wallingford Ave N on north side. On the south side, it goes from Wallingford Ave N to Meridian Ave N. There were some barriers sitting in the planting strip, so it seems to still be under construction.

Updated west end in https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/180839020. East end has a mix of flexible delineator posts and concrete barriers, but the convention in the Seattle area seems to be using cycleway=track for both.

What is the access situation for this road/gate? This is a public road according to King County Records. Can you walk or bike through here? I'm seeing a fair amount of running/walking activity along this street on the Strava heatmap, so I assume there's a way to easily get around the gate.

A majority of the street names in Carbonado don't match Pierce County records. Based on a survey, I can confirm that "School Street" is actually called Baliey Drive, the slightly curved portion of "3rd Street" is Davies Drive, and the road that Pershing Ave turns into on the southwest end of town labeled "Hillside Drive"/"Hillside Drive East" is actually called Wilkeson Carbonado Road East. The street names in the entire town need to be checked with a survey or an appropriately licensed data source.

Excellent, thank you! It's most easily visible from the Rocky Reach Trail on the east side of the river—you can walk right up to the support tower. When I visited, the cable car(?) was on the east side. I didn't see any signs explaining what it was used for or who owns it. You can also see it from US Highway 97A on the west side of the river, but it's less obvious. The cable terminates at a little hut on a hill on the river side of the train tracks. It's right across from the "Bob's Apple Barrel Bark" sign.

2~ 9 months agocommentedpesticides

The changeset comment says links should not have names, but this conflicts both with the situation on the ground and with the current guidance on the wiki at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Highway_link: "Link roads _normally_ do not have names" (emphasis mine).

According to https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/greenways-program/rainier-valley-north-south, a new greenway was added here in summer 2024. It runs from Cheasty Blvd S to John Muir Elementary along S Della St and S Walden St, connecting to the existing Rainier Valley Greenway. The mailer sent to nearby residents refers to it as the "S Walden St Neighborhood Greenway".
2~ 1 year agocommentedpesticides
♦125
If it's anything like other greenways in Seattle, there are likely wayfinding signs, sharrows, speed humps, and stop signs facing the cross streets. In OSM these are typically represented by a route=bicycle relation (e.g., https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/2240939).

Approaching from the south there is a wide path most of the way, but it ends, and it wasn't clear which way would be best to reach the fence. From the fence I could see what looked like a slightly overgrown path, but didn't follow it because it was getting dark. I am marking the part I could not survey as informal for now and will try to come back with a friend and more daylight sometime.

There's a new modal filter here. There's a median island that allows people walking and biking to continue straight on NE 83rd St, while forcing drivers to turn. The Strava Global Heatmap shows most people stopping at this point. Is there something preventing people from continuing south on the trail beyond here? On the Pierce County PublicGIS parcel map, I see that the old railroad right of way, now owned by Pierce County Parks & Recreation, crosses over the creek around here. Is that what's causing people to turn back?

Probably someone who uses a geographical marker as their spot to turn around on a jog. Maybe there is a sign there, or they use that bend in the trail as their point to turn around. Other heatmap data shows people using the trail beyond this point. I'm guessing a jogger with a very good routine of getting out turns around at this point.

Reopening this. Someone who attempted to ride this a few years ago mentioned that the creek was completely obstructing the trail. Need to survey to figure out the exact location of the obstruction.

There's zero heat map activity south of the creek, suspect the trail south of the creek was washed away during a flood. Probably far more likely to get an answer via internet search. Plenty of hits for washed out trails near Wilkeson when I just searched

The Snohomish County website says that this section of the trail has been closed since 2018 due to a landslide near this point. Is that accurate? Is there a path around the landslide?

This is the website I was referring to: https://www.snohomishcountywa.gov/Facilities/Facility/Details/Whitehorse-Trail-105 However, someone online said a local told them it was open all the way to Arlington as of April 2025. The Strava Global Heatmap appears to support this: the supposedly closed portion between Arlington and the Trafton Trailhead has about the same amount of cycle and foot traffic as the rest of the trail.
