It introduces some really sharp angled turns (New Road → Cable Street and Cable Street → bus station) and I’m not convinced it would represent reality any more accurately than the existing mapping. Does the existing mapping allow any vehicle routing or other interpretations of the data which are incorrect? While the existing mapping isn’t great in showing New Road and the bus station entrance as crossing over as separate roads, in reality it is a really hairy lane change when driving there, so it’s not really inaccurate. | ||

I’ve tweaked it slightly in https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/171963558 to put the defib on the wall and add a transit stopping area relation. That’s the (slightly complicated, but justified) way of associating all the different parts of the bus stop area with each other. The bus stop node basically points at the bus stop sign (on a pole). The shelter is mapped separately, and the relation ties both of those, plus the stop position in the road, and the stuff for the identical stop on the other side of the road, together. It’s complicated because it needs to provide enough information to render on the map and also allow for bus routes to be shown in satnavs and similar. It's mainly used as the route off Scafell for people attempting the Bob Graham Round and consists of loose scree which can be fun to run down if you like that type of thing. While supporting an attempt recently, we came across a family and dog halfway down this scree run not particularly enjoying themselves. They said they were surprised that their map said this to be a path (AllTrails). Without judging them for blindly following an app despite their better judgement, I would be very much in favour of removing this way as a path from the map. I'm leaving this note beforehand as this is a destructive action. If I were to not delete this path, are there appropriate tags (surface=scree is non-standard, right?) that can be appropriately interpreted by third party "navigation" software to dissuade unwary walkers from subjecting themselves to this kind of thing? Anyone wanting to go down this "path" on purpose doesn't need the benefit of a way marked on OpenStreetMap as they probably know the line. The Borrowdale race route off Scafell Pike, also down scree, isn't marked as a path, why is this one marked as a path? | |

I don't use any of those apps so hard to know what's appropriate and if they're even used when routing by said apps (I would hope they are but cynical me thinks otherwise). I take your point that the line is well used by runners. Some other paths in the area also have an incline tag, which I can add too. I won't remove this "path" from the map, but I'll propose adding these tags: trail_visibility: horrible (or no?) surface: scree sac_scale: alpine_hiking (I don't know about this, there's a wide variety of interpretation in the local area, with Rakes Progress getting T5, Lords Rake T4 and WWT T6 when I'd argue them all to be about the same level of difficulty). The sac_scale= tagging on other paths probably isn’t very well standardised because it’s been added by different people at different times. I suspect there’s an element of inflation going on, too, to try and dissuade inexperienced walkers from them. Perhaps those sac_scales could be tweaked a bit in future but, as you say, it’s a can of worms! The scree run off Scafell Pike (if we’re talking about the same thing) has been closed off by the National Trust for path conservation, yes. There was similar logic applied with that edit: if the path is deleted from OSM then someone will just add it back, whereas if it‘s tagged as disused for conservation reasons then hopefully that dissuades people from adding it back. Ultimately people are responsible for their own route planning and navigation on the day, yes. The best OSM can do is make sure that paths are appropriately tagged so people/apps have the information they need to make decisions about them. Thanks for your efforts on this :) | ||

The powerline which heads west from Dacre is still there (for now), just not sure how far north the power line was buried. Another guess would be it follows the road for a bit, (since its close to the road from the A66 to Dacre). It might then runs under that field west of Dacre, to join up again. Probably the only way to be sure of the new route (if it’s changed) is to survey those markers. For now, removing the poles and marking the cable as an underground cable (layer=-1 location=underground) following its existing route, would be sufficient. It gives information about the electricity network, and the opportunity for someone to tweak its route in future if they survey the posts. | ||
