In this case, Torbram is "properly" split in the sections where there's a median. I believe this routing issue is caused by OSMAnd not being smart enough to recognize the transition between the split and unified sections of road, and so it interprets the U-Turn from the Northbound split section to the Southbound one as being a left turn in 3-way intersection, which is presumably much less "expensive" in the routing algorithm than a U-Turn. If I'm right about that, then the "correct" solution is either to mark these "left turns" as explicitly banned on the map, or to make OSMAnd smarter about interpreting the existing map; I don't know which. I'll ask on the OSM wiki talk pages and the OSMAnd issue tracker. Incidentally, I agree that duplicating intersections is a very dumb consequence of split roads, which is why I've started merging roads on the very short segments that are actually inside the paved intersection area. It's even consistent with the policy: there's no barrier on /that/ part of the road 😏. | |

There was similar case with Waze about 10 years ago, where similar policy existed, but at some point people realised those splits cause more issues then solutions. It make sense to split highways where roads are phisicaly independent, they have independent routs and addressing. But not for the road which is a single road for all practical purposes and just happen to have 100 meter long islands where you cannot cross the road. I cannot name any benifits of this split. There's variety of tools for a single road which may solve the issue of road crossing, like turn restrictions and so on. However, there's a long list of issues caused by splits. For a starter, each split is a turn 60-70° turn, therefor a manuver, which imply speed reduction, counter productive lane cange sugestions and turs popups. It create tones of segments, intersections and other nodes which are just overhead. It adds up everywhere includin memory requrements on servers and maps sizes for users to download. Also, it wreck the havoc in adressing system. Cause each road segment should have a name and building numbers. I mean, the list is going on and on. | |
