This segment between the connection to the parking aisle and the intersection with the highway is not built to cycleway standard, it's just a sidewalk made of concrete slabs that has a single sign in one direction designating it as shared. I think highway=footway + bicycle=designated would better represent this than highway=cycleway. The rest, from the connector to the parking lot up to Ravine Way is built as a unsegregated cycleway (wide and smooth asphault).

♦136
Incorrect. This is legally designated as a multi-use path, and that is evident both from the original project drawings, the finished product (seen two weeks ago in person), and the fact that the crossing of Carey has elephants' feet, which are only used on designated MUPs. Please stop arbitrarily declaring your opinion to be the appropriate way to map things.

I've been trying to clarify what the actual correct way to tag this based on the standards outlined in the wiki is. That's WHY I've been using notes rather than just changing things unilaterally. I want to have things consistent. You're the one who keeps cutting off my attempts to do so while declaring your own opinion to be uncontestable fact. I could be wrong, you could be wrong, or the wiki itself could just be so ambiguous that it's not a matter of right and wrong. That's the entire point. I don't care which of us is the one who is right. I care about making sure that what we put in the database is consistent.
6~ 1 month agocommentedInfiNorth
♦136
I have already stated: The official plans state this is an MUP It is contiguous to the MUP network along Carey Road It is adjoined at all intersections by elephants feet, which denote pedestrian and cyclist use - a feature of MUPs. It is legally designated as an MUP. As it is very new, and the CRD Bikemap is outdated, it does not appear in the CRD Bikemap. I do not see how this has any ambiguity. It is an MUP in every way other than paving style - which is not a method of identifying MUP status in Saanich (another example is the MUP outside the Shelbourne St. Church of Christ).

OpenStreetMap Wiki shows that this should be just part of Harbour Road rather than mapped separately, and tagged as followed: cycleway:left=track cycleway:right=no cycleway:left:oneway=no https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:cycleway:right:oneway This seems to be a consistent problem throughout the entire CRD.
2~ 11 months agocommentedsmithkm
♦285
I've added cycleway:right=separate to Harbour Road.
3~ 9 months agocommented@eldang
♦21
I advocate for keeping the bike way separate because it's the beginning of a long regional trail, of which only a short segment is shared with Harbour Road. To merge this segment with the road would be less consistent with how locals describe it.
4~ 3 months agocommentedalester
♦466
Mapping a cycleway track as a separate way is an accepted way of doing things: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:cycleway%3Dtrack#Alternatives_to_mapping_using_cycleway=track ...and I would argue it's more consistent with other highway tagging, where a road can be split into a dual carriageway due to a physical barrier between the directions. The one change I would suggest to the current tagging is to add cycleway=sidepath to the Goose way, to indicate that it's acting in the role of "cycleway=separate" to Harbour Road. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:cycleway%3Dsidepath
5~ 1 month agocommentedInfiNorth
♦136
I would argue against this as, by separating the infrastructure, routing algorithms won't know to tell people to follow Harbour Road, they will instead be following an unnamed random path that the algorithm has no idea is on the pavement shared by the road with only a narrow concrete median separating it.

Seaton street here is marked as a cycle route, and the pedestrian underpass as a designated bike path. I don't remember and signs designating any of this for bicycles. Need to ground truth. There have to be clear on site indications like markings or signs to count as "designated". At best I'd consider that highway=footpath bicycle=yes. It's officially designated on the regional government map, and is a bike route as per painted sharrows on the road along its entire length from the MUP across the playing fields to the tunnel. This includes on the recently rebuilt intersection at Regina Ave, showing that it is not a legacy feature that has been abandoned. This is both officially mapped as a bike route AND marked in real life as a bike route (and is used heavily by cyclists, to boot). 2~ 11 months agocommentedsmithkm
♦285
Yes, see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:cycleway#Buffered_and_protected_bicycle_ways
3~ 7 months agocommentedInfiNorth
♦136
This does not specify flextposts. Is specifically says that unprotected buffer is a standard cycleway=lane, with a buffer. There are no bollards here (flexposts are not bollards). There is literally no protection for cyclists at this point, no physical barrier to being run over by drivers.
4~ 3 months agocommentedsmithkm
♦285
This seems like something that needs to be sorted out on the wiki rather than here on a local note. The important thing is to ensure it's consistent across OSM.
5~ 3 months agocommentedInfiNorth
♦136
No idea how to do that. Not an active user - happy to take it somewhere that would actually have active discussion. This is also a localized issue, as our local government claimed flexposts 40 feet apart are "protection" but I'm willing to bet most people would find that ridiculous.

3~ 7 months agocommentedsmithkm
♦285
Ah, that makes sense given the new bike infrastructure on Gorge. Do you have a public source for that? I'd like to know more. Given that it's signed in one direction, and this path really isn't well suited to bicycles because of the combined steepness, narrowness, and poor visibility. I think it's safe to assume it's meant to apply both ways. Tagging it as a footpath with bicycle=dismount until it gets upgraded seems appropriate to me.

1~ 8 months agoopened---A sign marks this as a bike connector route but there's no ramp or cut out to connect to the bike lane (have to stop in the bike lane, dismount, and lift the bike onto the sidewalk. Also this is obviously not very useful for anyone in the west bound cycle lane. Haven't checked if there is any additional signage on Finlayson Place.

I checked with city staff because another nearby "connector" is a hilariously steep cliff that even a novice mountainbiker would have a hard time navigating. They are going to be taking down most of these signs over the next year, as it far predates Victoria's now much-improved bike infrastructure standards.

A more accurate representation of these trails is needed - Galiano Trails has opened a new trail to Dionisio and this area deserves accurate mapping, partly to keep people off trails that may intersect with private property that landowners don't want people on.

I don't think this really fits OSM's definitions of a Living Street. I suspect that is more what Government Street is. This street doesn't purport to allow people to walk anywhere they want - it has crosswalks, dedicated car parking, etc.
2~ 8 months agocommentedInfiNorth
♦136
Without further feedback I will be reverting this to a minor/unclassified/residential street (same as Langley Street). This is not a "living street" as pedestrians do not have the right to walk in the same space as the cars are operating.

Resolved by removing ways. Parking area is a private parking lot access through the parkade, so a way in this space is unecessary due to the scale and lack of anyone ever routing through this space. Building shapes corrected as well (building between parking lot and Blanshard Street).

It is part of the sea side touring route like the rest of beach drive but I saw this section is tagged as having shared lanes. Which should have at least some on road infrastructure like Graham or the Fernwood connector with sharrows, speed bumps, and modal filters.

OpenStreetMap has specific tag standards for dual-direction separated bike infrastructure now: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:cycleway:right:oneway This should be cycleway:left=track cycleway:left:oneway=no There is a lot of separately-mapped on-street protected two-way infrastructure in Victoria in general, this may need a major regional overhaul.

I have done most of the mapping of these paths in this area. Most of the street adjacent paths and park paths are marked as highway=cycleway foot=designated bicycle=designated segregated=no surface=concrete/asphalt width=3.0 I marked them as a cycleway because the iD editor recommends this through the preset "Cycle & Foot Path". These paths are also different then a traditional sidewalk/path in that they are usually named, 3 meters wide, and signed as being designated for pedestrians and cyclists. Further, the Township of Langley designates them as an "Off Street Trail" rather then a sidewalk in the map you provided. The street adjacent paths could instead be marked: highway=footway footway=sidewalk foot=designated bicycle=designated segregated=no surface=concrete/asphalt width=3.0 And the park paths could instead by marked: highway=path foot=designated bicycle=designated segregated=no surface=concrete/asphalt width=3.0 Either method is ok with me. Something to note is that the map you linked is out of date (even though it says 2024) and has errors that don't match in-person signage.
