Using no_right_turn or no_straight_on doesn't make a difference, see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Relation:restriction#Tags It seems Valhalla has updated its database because the routing example works as expected now. I guess the via-nodes are not necessary though and the via-way should be sufficient. Downside of the current solution (relation v7): If I miss driving into the bypass and the route is recalculated, it cannot lead me on the shortest way out of the roundabout. This problem could be fixed by using an only_straight_on restriction with the bypass as via-way. But I'm a bit embarrassed that I didn't thought of using a restriction myself to solve the wrong routing :-/ | |

I would not expect a routing app to be so precise as to recalculate a route due to being a few meters further east then expected, Rather i think it would assume GPS error. Then again, i might be wrong. I never use such applications as i do not drive, and my phone's GPS is always quite inaccurate. And GPS accuracy could improve over the years. But I found a real problem: Start routing from the track "Ale Bamerdaller Wee" to the south. The restriction disallows driving through the roundabout and proposes a detour in the northern direction for a turnaround (I wonder why it doesn't route one full circle through the roundabout instead). By the way, GraphHopper has updated its database as well now. So yes, I will adapt the restriction relation as mentioned above. | |

The error you described (OSRM entirely refusing one roundabout section) should have nothing to do with my only_straight_on restriction v8 because that doesn't touch the roundabout at all. My restriction version still hasn't reached the three router databases. This can be seen in my second routing example link (routing from Ale Bamerdaller Wee to the south-west exit): The roundabout is avoided (not desired, effect of your restriction v7) - for OSRM you have to set the starting point a bit more to the Western end of Ale Bamerdaller Wee, OSRM seems to handle motor_vehicle=destination on that way incorrect. For GraphHopper you can see the routing data version when clicking on the "More details from GraphHopper" link, there it is written under "Details", currently 2026-01-15T11:00:00Z - my changeset is from 2026-01-16 one day before. Nonetheless the broken routing from north to south-east is strange. I cannot see why your restriction v7 should lead to that result - even all three routers doing the same. But I haven't checked that routing direction before, only now after your recent comments. However, the Wiki only describes the "via" members to be 1 node or >=1 ways, so restriction v7 at least doesn't conform to the Wiki. | |

I will close this issue, any attempts that were made to compensate for router behaviour caused more damage then good. I now realise that what we were doing was wrong, and the responsibility for the issue was incorrectly assigned to OSM rather then the routers. Grasses are natural and grow, any forestry vehicle, horse riders, pedestrians can recognize it and use it. Many examples exist with tracks with small grasses, OSM's Wiki has examples showing grade 5 tracks with grass. Even if the grasses would be higher the way would still be eligible as a track because grasses grow and its natural to grow, they do not block passage. Don't you understand that? From my experience there needs to be a lot more heat to be sure there really is a path. My explanation for this situation here, is a problem on the ground. There seem to MTB folks who create trails from time to time and there is a reason why somebody has put sticks there.
