Per the Access section, it seems that it's an unofficial but permissive single "cliff face" (excuse my technical ignorance). Perhaps it should instead be a node and [leisure=sport crag] replaced with [climbing=crag]? https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/climbing=crag This nearby node is the only other global use of [leisure=sport crag] https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/1330511229

2~ 10 months agocommentedeteb3
♦1,028
This doesn't seem to be called Uffington Manor in the conservation list: Readable version: https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101317188-uffington-house-restaurant-uffington Official, licensable version: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1317188
3~ 10 months agocommentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
I think the NHLE only capture the name at the time they designate a building, that link mentioning a listing year of 1987. The historic=manor tag has been removed from https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1119604029/history so there's nothing wrong or missing from OSM, but it would be nice if we can pin that NHLE item to a building, which presumably is this one and an exact match for https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q26603432

The lines/ways you refer to show the width of the road, I believe. Some mappers do this (there're not joined to the road route as they cross it so throw up an error in JOSM). They usually have some attribute applied to them, can’t remember what ATM. I ignore them where I can as they confuse me.

The out of copyright 1974 (1:2,500) OS map has the Wye extending further north west than the relation, although they seem to be missing a tile/sheet & it's possible the waterways have changed course due to mills no longer needing the volume of water they needed (Verco have made furniture here since 1932) National Library of Scotland map viewer: https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16.8&lat=51.64237&lon=-0.79941&layers=258&right=osm relation: https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/12432638#map=15/51.64248/-0.79269 It also has the waterway between here (https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/610284448 ) and the end of Desborough rec ground (https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/26995603 ) as being the Wye.

8~ 11 months agocommentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
71 access=visitors, but given that having employees or visitors as a value for [access] to public amenities probably isn't something that would be understood by a map (the user would have to read the value and infer it from there), maybe [access=employees;visitors] could work https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org.uk/tags/access=visitors#overview That said there are 46 examples of access=customers;employees , which are exclusively on parking type features in the town of Ellon, Scotland https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org.uk/tags/access=customers%3Bemployees#overview
9~ 11 months agocommented4004
♦3,488
I am wary of using some arguably more explicit access tag, given none of the ones you mention are likely to be supported. "customers" here was used to indicate access is not public, one needs to be a "customer" of the building tenant, ie a visitor or employee.

Sorry, must have missed your reply. access=private is probably better. I think access=customers could be mis-interpreted as you have to buy something to use their space / toilet but otherwise means the public are welcome to enter.

Yes indeed, this is correct. Let me explain. They are apartments (not houses) sharing a building and land area but not entrances. 12 The Link has a door on The Link and is on the ground floor. 1 Grassfields Close has a door (and stairs) on Grassfields Close and is on the first floor. 3~ 11 months agocommentedgmar5
♦614
Do you mean that we should tag these areas, currently used as inner elements of the river Cherwell water multipolygon, as place=islet? (They are too small to be islands). I suppose we could, but I am not sure that it is helpful. It is just land surrounded by different rivers and ditches, which is quite common in the floodplain. If they had a proper name (like Osney Island), it would be different.
4~ 11 months agocommentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
place=islet doesn't have to be an inner relation in complex circumstances such as this btw. My question was really - is this an island with a name as opposed to a patch of land that just so happens to be enclosed by water, hence the name "Water Meadow" (which doesn't take up the full extent of the 'island') If we were to look at the East Midlands I'm sure there are many similar plots of farmland enclosed by drains, and I wouldn't argue that they were islets, but given we're looking at Oxford I just thought maybe the collegiate would name these islands - does that make sense?
5~ 11 months agocommentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
Tangentially, I would argue (pending verification) that Magdalen College don't own the waterways and should be split across them (multipolygon outer relations), in the same way it's split over "High Street" to the south https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/12605258
6~ 11 months agocommentedgmar5
♦614
Re your first point, I think "Water Meadow" is the name of the "meadow" element. Perhaps originally it was fully enclosed by water. Now, it is fenced off, and surrounded by a compacted-ground path, it does not reach the water. I think it looks fine as is. The larger area could be tagged as an islet, if you want. Your second point is something we can try to verify, you are probably right (should bridges be included, though?).
7~ 11 months agocommentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
I think it would make sense to have a place=islet as it would re-affirm "this is where the water ends", especially if someone is looking at an OSM-derived map without footpaths. Whether it's noname=yes or has some identifier produced by a government survey or Oxford geologian (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/geologian) from the pre-modern era would be a detail that could be captured after this note is closed. To the contrary of my second point, the OSMUK Cadastrel Parcels don't have a boundary for Magdalen College. I would expect there to be a border between freehold vs crown land, as is the case with the kings highway and major rivers. Maybe Magdalen College does indeed own the water. This would be a niche detail to capture but thinking ahead, if OSM were to be used by kayakers etc to establish where they can go with a Waterways Licence, knowing that the college owns the water would be useful, especially if they have the right to close them to waterway traffic.

I added place=islet on these 3 elements: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/176768213 https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/95658269 https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/46671729 I think we can leave the rest as it is, for now. There are historical records of ownership of both waters and fishing of the Cherwell, so it is very possible that is the same for the colleges, who own or owned most of the land in Oxford, acquired from the dissolution of monasteries and enclosures. (However, I do find the lack of clarity on the cadastral map for Magdalen a bit puzzling.) For access by users on the waterways, tags on the rivers themselves will be the best way of representing that, regardless of ownership and of the shape of the area the cut through. (You can close the note if you think it is resolved. Thanks).

The northern section (Grove Walk, or Grove Passage) is operated by Merton, which wouldn't call it "Merton Grove" (Grove is also the nearby building, to add to the confusion). However, it seems that it is referred to as such by others, so perhaps we can add Merton Grove as another alt_name (a loc_name?). The southern section (Merton Grove, operated by Christ Church) is probably also referred to as Merton Walk. We can be added as an alt_name.

♦6,074
The website refers to it as a "memorial plaza" perhaps giving weight to the name on https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/258048221 , although those tags should probably be moved from the outer way to the relation https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/7927667 However it's not clear then what the purpose of this historic=monument relation is https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/17848942 . I gather GNIS have since removed many of their entries and I can't find an archive (I've checked the wayback machine) of gnis:feature_id=528666 . I'm not sure what the copyright status is on the following website, but I'll link to it to provide some context: https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=10738 It seems there are 4 "marker" stones with the inscriptions mentioned on the National Park Service website, they might be worth adding along with an [inscription] tag if you know their exact location here.
