Per the Access section, it seems that it's an unofficial but permissive single "cliff face" (excuse my technical ignorance). Perhaps it should instead be a node and [leisure=sport crag] replaced with [climbing=crag]? https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/climbing=crag This nearby node is the only other global use of [leisure=sport crag] https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/1330511229

22025-06-01 20:11commentedeteb3
♦1,009
This doesn't seem to be called Uffington Manor in the conservation list: Readable version: https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101317188-uffington-house-restaurant-uffington Official, licensable version: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1317188
32025-06-01 23:02commentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
I think the NHLE only capture the name at the time they designate a building, that link mentioning a listing year of 1987. The historic=manor tag has been removed from https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1119604029/history so there's nothing wrong or missing from OSM, but it would be nice if we can pin that NHLE item to a building, which presumably is this one and an exact match for https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q26603432

The lines/ways you refer to show the width of the road, I believe. Some mappers do this (there're not joined to the road route as they cross it so throw up an error in JOSM). They usually have some attribute applied to them, can’t remember what ATM. I ignore them where I can as they confuse me.

The out of copyright 1974 (1:2,500) OS map has the Wye extending further north west than the relation, although they seem to be missing a tile/sheet & it's possible the waterways have changed course due to mills no longer needing the volume of water they needed (Verco have made furniture here since 1932) National Library of Scotland map viewer: https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16.8&lat=51.64237&lon=-0.79941&layers=258&right=osm relation: https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/12432638#map=15/51.64248/-0.79269 It also has the waterway between here (https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/610284448 ) and the end of Desborough rec ground (https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/26995603 ) as being the Wye.

71 access=visitors, but given that having employees or visitors as a value for [access] to public amenities probably isn't something that would be understood by a map (the user would have to read the value and infer it from there), maybe [access=employees;visitors] could work https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org.uk/tags/access=visitors#overview That said there are 46 examples of access=customers;employees , which are exclusively on parking type features in the town of Ellon, Scotland https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org.uk/tags/access=customers%3Bemployees#overview
92025-04-14 21:45commented4004
♦3,423
I am wary of using some arguably more explicit access tag, given none of the ones you mention are likely to be supported. "customers" here was used to indicate access is not public, one needs to be a "customer" of the building tenant, ie a visitor or employee.

32025-04-26 09:14commentedgmar5
♦526
Do you mean that we should tag these areas, currently used as inner elements of the river Cherwell water multipolygon, as place=islet? (They are too small to be islands). I suppose we could, but I am not sure that it is helpful. It is just land surrounded by different rivers and ditches, which is quite common in the floodplain. If they had a proper name (like Osney Island), it would be different.
42025-04-26 17:24commentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
place=islet doesn't have to be an inner relation in complex circumstances such as this btw. My question was really - is this an island with a name as opposed to a patch of land that just so happens to be enclosed by water, hence the name "Water Meadow" (which doesn't take up the full extent of the 'island') If we were to look at the East Midlands I'm sure there are many similar plots of farmland enclosed by drains, and I wouldn't argue that they were islets, but given we're looking at Oxford I just thought maybe the collegiate would name these islands - does that make sense?
52025-04-26 17:39commentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
Tangentially, I would argue (pending verification) that Magdalen College don't own the waterways and should be split across them (multipolygon outer relations), in the same way it's split over "High Street" to the south https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/12605258
62025-04-26 20:21commentedgmar5
♦526
Re your first point, I think "Water Meadow" is the name of the "meadow" element. Perhaps originally it was fully enclosed by water. Now, it is fenced off, and surrounded by a compacted-ground path, it does not reach the water. I think it looks fine as is. The larger area could be tagged as an islet, if you want. Your second point is something we can try to verify, you are probably right (should bridges be included, though?).
72025-04-29 21:34commentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
I think it would make sense to have a place=islet as it would re-affirm "this is where the water ends", especially if someone is looking at an OSM-derived map without footpaths. Whether it's noname=yes or has some identifier produced by a government survey or Oxford geologian (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/geologian) from the pre-modern era would be a detail that could be captured after this note is closed. To the contrary of my second point, the OSMUK Cadastrel Parcels don't have a boundary for Magdalen College. I would expect there to be a border between freehold vs crown land, as is the case with the kings highway and major rivers. Maybe Magdalen College does indeed own the water. This would be a niche detail to capture but thinking ahead, if OSM were to be used by kayakers etc to establish where they can go with a Waterways Licence, knowing that the college owns the water would be useful, especially if they have the right to close them to waterway traffic.

I added place=islet on these 3 elements: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/176768213 https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/95658269 https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/46671729 I think we can leave the rest as it is, for now. There are historical records of ownership of both waters and fishing of the Cherwell, so it is very possible that is the same for the colleges, who own or owned most of the land in Oxford, acquired from the dissolution of monasteries and enclosures. (However, I do find the lack of clarity on the cadastral map for Magdalen a bit puzzling.) For access by users on the waterways, tags on the rivers themselves will be the best way of representing that, regardless of ownership and of the shape of the area the cut through. (You can close the note if you think it is resolved. Thanks).

Is "New Walk" called "Poplar Walk" or is Wikipedia just making things up? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poplar_Walk Regardless of the actual name, if the trees are Poplar then this could be tagged on the tree row, or the tree rows converted to tree nodes. https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/834676040 https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/834676039 There are some other footpaths on this field that have their own wikipedia as well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Footpaths_in_Oxford
22025-04-26 09:36commentedgmar5
♦526
Christ Church uses "New Walk", so it is more appropriate as main name. "Poplar Walk" is already tagged as an alt_name. It seems that the tree row is not all poplars now, also lindens.

Thanks for pointing out the alt_name on https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/8125937 . Is there a "Merton Walk" near here as described in the second paragraph of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merton_Field ? There's a Merton Grove & Grove Walk to the north (as described on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grove_Walk ) but no "Merton Walk" as far as I can tell.
42025-04-26 20:43commentedgmar5
♦526
The northern section (Grove Walk, or Grove Passage) is operated by Merton, which wouldn't call it "Merton Grove" (Grove is also the nearby building, to add to the confusion). However, it seems that it is referred to as such by others, so perhaps we can add Merton Grove as another alt_name (a loc_name?). The southern section (Merton Grove, operated by Christ Church) is probably also referred to as Merton Walk. We can be added as an alt_name.
52025-04-29 11:51closedgmar5
♦526
I added an alt_name. - Grove Walk (Grove Passage; Merton Grove) - Merton Walk (Merton Grove). Merton Grove is now the alt_name to both sections of the path that goes from Broad Walk to Merton Street.

I gather GNIS have since removed many of their entries and I can't find an archive (I've checked the wayback machine) of gnis:feature_id=528666 . I'm not sure what the copyright status is on the following website, but I'll link to it to provide some context: https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=10738 It seems there are 4 "marker" stones with the inscriptions mentioned on the National Park Service website, they might be worth adding along with an [inscription] tag if you know their exact location here.

However the grounds of the house (curtilage) on satellite differ slightly from the images used on these sources, suggesting a change in use either to apartments or as hotel accommodation for Heathrow airport (other sources vary and aren't clear if they're elsewhere in this area and share the name of Fawns Manor) 1914 OS Map names it as just "Fawns". https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=17.5&lat=51.44927&lon=-0.44032&layers=168&right=osm

Curiously, the address "1100 Ohio Drive Southwest" seems to be for the "National Park Service", whom I gather are responsible for maintaining "President's Park" and a quick overpass turbo query suggests this is the only error. Should "Shropshire Way Main Route" be a super relation with the North/South parts as part of that relation? I think having a super relation is a good idea. I believe the Routes 11/4 are left over from pre-2017 before they had the North/South loops https://www.shropshiresgreatoutdoors.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Route-11-Titterstone-to-Severn-Way-Old-SW.pdf Route 4 could be repurposed to be a sub-relation of the south relation and renamed as "Stage 5: Craven Arms to Ludlow" (ref https://www.shropshireway.org.uk/application/files/6015/3312/8923/SW-5_CA_to_Ludlow_1.pdf) however I'm not sure about 11 as it links the Severn Way but isn't used as part of the official route.

42025-04-10 11:03commentedohmanger
♦461
Great! I'm unsure about the name tag - it says "Shropshire Way Main Route" on the waymark signs so it is probably the most appropriate however it just says "Shropshire Way" on the trailhead sculpture and "Main Route" does feel a bit redundant. I also don't know if some of the signs say something different e.g. for the Whitchurch spur (frustratingly I've walked parts of this but can't quite see on my pictures).

Greetings from New Zealand. I have been a contributor since 2013 to support my long-distance walking habit around my greater Wellington region, around my country and around western Europe. My current personal long-term project to connect, by walking, with my mother’s roots in Devon (Nymet Tracy and Plymouth) with my father’s roots in East Caithness (Latheron). My way through Scotland is reasonably settled from with four major connected routes from Ayr to Glasgow, Fort William, Inverness and onto Latheron. I am still working at how to easily get from Carlisle to Ayr. My way through England is not so easy. I have some suggestions from Devon to Bristol that need more work. From Bristol it seems useful to walk to Chepstow, take the Severn Way to Hereford, continue to Offa’s Dyke and so onto the coast of north Wales. I briefly visited Ironbridge about 20 years ago (having read Economic History) I have not visited the standout (for me) towns of Ludlow or Shrewsbury. In looking at the Offa’s Dyke Path, I noticed the Shropshire Way took me to those places. I also encountered the Shropshire Way Association website and the 15 stages. And I noticed the arrangement in OSM did not, in my view, adequately reflect the Associations views. (Sidebar: a route is a continuous thing from A to Z passing through B, C … X and Y. Any links or alternatives are best put into different relations. Accordingly, I have, using the original elements, created stages 01 to 15. In doing this I have: a) kept the link (originally named 10b) as a separate relation; and b) for stage 12 noted the “or” and chosen to include Wem to Ellesmere in the principal relation and put the alternatives, Wem to Whitchurch (24 km) and Whitchurch to Ellesmere (34 km) into their own separate relation

As the Shropshire Way and the Severn Way use the same, or nearby, roadway elements, I determined to create a more distinct reference code for each route relation. I hit on “ShW..” as a starting point. Thus stage 01 gets the “ref” code of “ShW01” and so on. I then struggled with the link relation of Shrewsbury to Haughmond Abbey. The Association names this as “10b”. As a temporary alternative, I have used the inelegant “ref” code of “ShWaa” Similarly for the alternatives from Wem to Whitchurch and on to Ellesmere. The two stages themselves I gave the “ref” code of “ShW12a” and “ShW12b”. As these break any continuity (see a) and b) above) I hit on the equally inelegant “ref” of “ShWwe” To close, while I have put all the stage relations into the super relation, I have refrained from changing its name. For my tuppence worth, I suggest simplifying to Shropshire Way. But I have entered the “ref” of “ShWay” You can see these things using this link: https://hiking.waymarkedtrails.org/#route?id=18970698&type=relation&map=10.0/52.6406/-2.7866 About five years ago, as Covid was making itself felt, Her Majesty sent a message to her New Zealand Subjects, as follows: Kia kaha, kia māia, kia mana’wa’nui. (Take care, be strong, patient and confident) I finish more simply: kia kaha (take care, be strong)

♦461
Hi, AlwynWellington thanks for doing the work by splitting into the new stages! Just a note that I think your ref tags should be removed as they're not official and potentially misleading information. Might be worth reaching out to the org to see what they use internally as I imagine they do have some system. :) In addition I think removing the '0' prefix from the name tag should also be done as this is not used in the guide books. Finally I think changing the colour tag to #f59c00 might be more appropriate as this is the waymarking colour.
82025-06-18 21:06commentedAlwynWellington
♦9
Kia ora (greetings) ohmanger And thank you for your suggestions. I have changed the route colour to #f59c00 "as this is the waymarking colour". One I had received some observation, my intention was to take various naming aspects, plus putting the link and how to cope with the alternative Wem to Whictchurch to Ellesmere and other observations to the Shropshire Way Association. I will refer to your observations when doing that. Once again, thank you. Kia kaha (take care, be strong), Alwyn

depends what you mean by ground level. The ground level of the multiple tracks of the mainline trackbed, which is on a rather wide embankment, is higher than the ground level of the dive-under, which then meets the lower level of the North Downs Line

I suppose there is a philopshical question of "what is a bridge" that would apply here, to which I'll abstain from attempting to solve. Wikipedia have a list of "Major bridges" on the GWRL, which only mentions the one to the east that bridges the Kennet: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Western_Main_Line#Tunnels,_viaducts_and_major_bridges Between that bridge and this note is "Biscuit Tunnel", which likely has the exact same elevation situation as the "tunnel" under this note. However satellite imagery suggests there's clearly some kind of bridge structure here. I would be tempted to add it as a bridge area, but then that would confuse anyone looking at bridges over train tracks that aren't themselves tagged as bridges, or if I were to re-tag a section of one of the oldest railways as being a bridge, I'd have railway fans on me asking for evidence or to solve the philosphical question of what a bridge is. Think what I'll do is look for any specialist / technical literature on the GWRL and see if it mentions this specifically as being a bridge or having a tunnel underneath & maybe check the rest of the line at the same time.

Is this "archaeological site" signposted or known locally at all? https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1256896646 the Historic England ref tag follows to this link https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1016361 which names it "Medieval settlement and associated ridge and furrow, West Leaze" - which is a bit of a mouthful + subject to copyright (not allowed) I suppose it's ok if there's no name but it would be insightful if possible.

There's no official name I know of, although it is fairly known locally as some sort of historical site.
32025-04-03 16:03commentedPatch86UK
♦9
The name is "West Leaze", but in almost all real usage you see this contextualized as "former Medieval village of West Leaze" or "West Leaze archaeological site" as the name still applies to the surviving farm and modern housing north of Mill Lane. I would suggest "West Leaze archaeological site" is the best non-copyrighted compromise for use here.

Thank you Patch86UK for your response, however, perhaps to the dismay of some and the glee of others, OSM isn't for invented/compromise names. My question was really out of curiosity & trying to to improve the quality of archaeological site type features in the local area. Anyway I've added a link to wikidata on the way, which is an outlink that works on osm.org (unlike the Historic England ref), so I'm a bit happier that non tech savvy people can figure out what the archaeological site is describing. Maybe Swindon Borough Council could put up some signposts or an information board so OSM can add a name to it...

Do you know if that's the signposted name for https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1374532633 ? OSM has a key ref:edubase to link to the government provided list of schools, this one likely being ref:edubase= 148618 , so we can track what schools are missing or mapped incorrectly. My aim here is to pin that tag to the school but it would be fairly meaningless if it doesn't have a name. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:ref:edubase https://osm.mathmos.net/schools/progress/NR/#15/52.6484/1.1562

Hi Quorthon2025, on OSM we use notes to track issues with the map or to indicate that things might be missing. Closing a note is a way of saying that there's nothing wrong either because the data is already OK or a change has been made. Can you confirm that the separate building isn't part of the pub at all? For example it might be a building with seating in..
52025-04-05 07:24commentedQuorthon2025The question was 'Is there only one pub here?' The answer is yes. I have eaten lunch in the garden at the George. The building in question is not, as far as I am aware, part of the pub business, and it is not oipen to the public. It's not up to me to say if 'amenity = pub' should stay or go.

I would recommend the road connection is returned, the locked gate should stop routers as there is a connection here else there wouldn't be a gate.
62025-04-15 17:20commentedHarveyKellyNot sure I follow your logic - the gate/passagway is maybe wide enough for a horse, not a car. Plus, you cannot drive through a cemetery as a through road. I'll provide a photo in the next couple of days.
72025-04-15 17:25commentedHarveyKellyHere you go. This is the gate at the north end. Inaccessible to traffic. https://maps.app.goo.gl/oCXqNq2KMfnVJQub9

Google maps is not a source we can use for mapping from due to licencing. A service road or path way may make sense, the map should reflect what's on the ground, gates typically have ways leading to them even if you can't pass through the gate.
92025-04-16 02:18commentedHarveyKellySorry I didn't send the google link for mapping, rather so that you can actually see the gate and cemetery in question - i.e. it's not a through road.

Dom's Italia has since been added here: https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/11767353433 But given the awkward on the ground situation (the building extending half under a bridge) It would be useful to map it as an area or merge into a building. For context, the note is pointing at a disused bar called "The Knott" https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/1898421317/history And the buildings are: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/363759090 https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/284930022 which Cadastral suggest are slightly maligned.

But what does the node describe? a specific archaeological site that is still visible?
52025-03-28 10:28commentednickbits
♦80
I took "external references" to mean evidence in records. It marks an area that was once a Roman period settlement. There are still wells in the immediate area of the marker that can be seen (on private property).
62025-03-28 17:49commentedDorneyLake123
♦6,074
Sorry for the confusion. What I'm trying to do is establish if there can be any references added to the node (ie wikidata or a description), so any data consumer can follow through on what this node is describing. Further, it would prevent it being deleted in the future if there's a strict approach to the "provability" of archaeological site type features.

I've just found this planning application for the plot, which was approved last month(feb 2025), to build 2 bungalows here: https://publicaccess.westberks.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=SGIA0XRD0S100 (West Berkshire Council 24/01476/FUL) In the Design & Access Statement there's a passage reading "Probable Roman roadside ditch an undated pit and a posthole were observed." with the suggestion that archaeology will be performed during construction. Once these are built it would probably be incorrect to keep the node, unless the features are preserved and can be seen/surveyed. However in the meantime it would be useful to keep this note open to track the development & the notability of the roman archaeology established when it's finished.
82025-03-29 08:11commentednickbits
♦80
My assumption has been that the marker was placed there as it is a archaeological area (Roman Way, A4, Henwick Field, etc.) that has been excavated many times (I have all the archaeological reports). There is nothing visible at the node location. It is similarly marked on old OS maps. So to clarify, my understanding is that an excavated site or area comes under this marker type. Is that correct? If not then this marker should be removed, and is there a marker then for an excavated site/area?

On the one hand it could be an area encompassing the site but the name "Whitchurch Silk Mill" clearly only refers to the building that is the mill so tourism=museum, wikidata etc could go just on that

indeed, research shows that the former building 'Horse Meadow' was demolished, and the current property, now named Park House was built in circa 2014.

Thanks, I was concerned that it didn't exist since the node was placed inside a built up part of the school, but bing streetside / LiDAR show it's 100m north. Using that Link I've found it's wikidata item: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17645882 I'll convert the burial mound to an area at it's correct location. It also has a "roof:shape" tag despite being a simple statue, as shown in this creative commons image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rochambeau_Statue_(Washington,_D.C.)_-_DSC01033.JPG maybe instead of "roof" the key could be "plinth"? There doesn't seem to be any precedent for this using taginfo (database of all OSM tags) but it would be more correct: https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/search?q=plinth

I've changed the height value to 2.4 based on NPS source and removed the roof tags. The roof tags were applied before the statue was identified, I think by someone looking at nadir overhead imagery and guessing. https://npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/GetAsset/NRHP/78000256_text

In that case it does make sense to make the assumption it's "greenfield". The aim of my note was probably just to figure out the extent to which greenfield was used by mistake to tag "green fields" and to see, when used correctly, if any context could be added - for example a note linking to a planning application. Do you think it would be fair to retag this as [natural=scrub][landuse=greenfield] (both tags) and add a fence spanning the perimeter?

Can't find an FHRS ID for it. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist and it's possible it won't show up on this map (FSA sometimes malform address formats): https://gregrs.dev.openstreetmap.org/fhodot/?lat=51.48479&lon=-0.21966&zoom=18&layer=fhrs

Should this service road connect with the main road as well as the cycle path?
