1~ 2 months agoopenedJackMLCourse of Mylnes Culvert incorrect at this point. I have an Environment Agency map showing the correct course: • St Stephens Street • Under St Stephen's Garden • Along Marsh Street to Prince Street. A stormwater culvert runs from my pin and under the Centre to Cascade Steps. This is the culvert that many Bristolians believe is the River Frome, as it was before the construction of Mylnes Culvert. If you need to see the map you can email me: jackmartinleith@gmail.com. Thanks for giving this your attention. Jack

♦147
Hi, did you mean to locate this pin here? I've just happened on to it by chance and can't quite figure out what you intend to mean. The route you're describing seems to be that which I've mapped
3~ 1 month agocommentedJackMLLooks like you've not read my note properly. Mylnes Culvert, runs from Stone Bridge beneath Quay Head (southern tip of Electricity House), around the EAST side of St Stephens Church (there's a curve here) then following the course of Marsh Street to Prince Street, thence picking up the route you've mapped. Also from Stone Bridge there's a stormwater culvert running beneath the centre to No.1 Harbourside bar, what many Bristolians wrongly believe to be the Frome outlet. You've conflated the two culverts. Hope this is now settles the matter. I've been studying this topic for many years and can provide evidence if you need it.
4~ 1 month agocommentedmstrbrid
♦147
Right, and that is how it is currently mapped. Why have you placed this pin on Frogmore St?
5~ 1 month agocommentedJackMLI didn't put the pin there. I put it on Quay Headm by Milk Thistle. Your mapping puts Mylnes Culvert under Broad Quay, which is incorrect. The culvert below the Centre is a separate entity that terminates below Cascade Steps, close to No.1 Harbourside. Two culverts. Mylnes Culvert goes around St Stephens Street and then follows Marsh Street. Please escalate this issue as you seem unable to make sense of my words.
6~ 1 month agocommentedmstrbrid
♦147
Please know that I'm not affiliated with the OSM Foundation or data working group - I'm a member of the public with an interest in open source maps. There is no-one to 'escalate' the issue to unless an OSM-contributor suspects vandalism to the map database has occured. I would recommend you familiarise yourself with the concept here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/ For clarity, the new pin you've just made at the correct location (https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/5097398), but let's continue the discussion here for convenience. The route of the Frome into the floating harbour before the construction of Mylne's Culvert is represented by the following way: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1449669104 This was, until a month ago, included in the River Frome relation, based on OS maps from before Mylne's project and which are no longer to copyright, but are, as you point out, no longer up to date. The Frome relation now includes Mylne's Culvert as it is, as you say, the course which the water follows under normal conditions: https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/2863283 I mapped this route from design drawings of Mylne's Culvert after receiving permission from Bristol Archives to do so. These drawings show the route approximately (probably within 10m). If you have access to information which could improve the accuracy and is compatible with OSM's terms of use (https://osmfoundation.org/wiki/Licence/Contributor_Terms) - fantastic! I would suggest familiarising yourself with how to edit the map and correct it directly yourself, acknowledging the source of the changes and including in the changeset comments a confirmation that the source meets the OSM's Contributors Terms

The Old Malt House, as in the performing arts theater, no longer exists. Old Malt House still remains as the name of the building and is thus in the address of the Jam Jar; I'd update this myself although the way the building is mapped makes me uncertain as to which specific part of the building is the Jam Jar vs other units.
4~ 3 months agocommentedJackMLThanks. Club395 is at the same address. https://www.club395.uk/ It's a separate business. Best wishes, Jack
5~ 3 months agocommentedmstrbrid
♦147
Both Jam Jar & Club395 are mapped as separate nodes, along with all the other businesses which occupy the Old Malt House. I've double-checked businesses today in person with one of the Club395 managers. Seems like the default OSM Carto 'map' doesn't render amenity=events_venue, but they are all there, searchable and visible on apps which do show events venues, so you'll find them there on whichever OSM editor you prefer

The bing aerial photos have the old layout (basically a big 'X', right?) but it's now as I've mapped it. I expect there will be a few tweaks needed to improve the accuracy of what I've drawn which was based on photos and aligning various parts with existing buildings. The note is just there as a reminder to check the accuracy in the future - also have popped a few fixme's on the main roads for good measure

Presuming you mean the gazetteer, rather than the OS base map, do you have a reference for the type of license it uses?
4~ 4 months agocommentedSimon Hobeck
♦589
I meant here: https://maps.bristol.gov.uk/pinpoint/ I've just spotted that data is OS copyright. However, if you need a primary source, I went there recently and added that tree in the triangle of paths. (It is a lovely tree).
5~ 4 months agocommentedmstrbrid
♦147
Tes, I thought you might have meant that! I thought you'd found the license for the LSG layer which that service hosts. Atm, I'm only aware of the old OS's, signs, and the OSOpenRoads dataset as being compatible sources. Agreed, though, tis a lovely tree this time of year!

Hi, Jamie. If I'm right to assume this is your first comment, welcome to the OSM community! You'll need a third-party app / desktop program to edit the map database. If you'd like to have a go, StreetComplete is good for beginners and Vespucci is a little more flexible. The wiki should give you all the information you need, and the main OSM forum is a good place to learn the basic guidelines and ask questions: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Main_Page https://community.openstreetmap.org/

Does the relaid track extend to Butterfly junction?
4~ 1 year agocommentedJhynjhiruuNo, not yet. There's a work site (I think for the repairs to the river walls) in the way of the trackbed, and most of the rail in that area has been removed. The track directly connected to the shed (which is known as 'the Barn') is still in place, but it's substantially overgrown. Beyond the work site (starting near the traffic lights on the road branching off Cumberland Road) the ballast is in place, but no rail or sleepers. The platform is there, but not yet in the right place. If it's useful, I'll take some photos when I'm next there.

Not of that point, only showing the Eastern end of Castle St from the new pedestrian & cycleway junction with Old Market St. How best to share that? Castle St was reduced to make space for the widened pavement & cycleway. It's at that pedestrian entrance to the park that the carriageway narrows, with a one-way arrow painted on the asphalt. My guess is it allows maintenance vehicles to Castle Park and the CHP plant to go back-and-forth easily.

No, Broad Weir is now open for traffic and the temporary bus stop is no longer in use. However, I've noticed this location being used on more than one occasion recently, is the node worth permanently keeping?

Can confirm the signpost still exists although the "Temporary" labels have been removed so probably worth keeping for the time being
