The BOS resolution (https://archive.org/details/journalofproceed1916sanfrich/page/1192/mode/2up p. 1192 col. 2) does not mention etymology. The statue was placed in 1962 and the nearby bell, also commemorating Hidalgo, was placed in 1996, so the circumstantial evidence is not as strong as it first appears.

	3	~ 2 years ago	commented	moppetto ♦72	I think the transition actually happens midway between 28th and Valley; San Jose Ave (the named thing, not the paved road) continues straight NNE towards the hospital, with the name switching from the divided 4-lane roadway to the unmarked 1-lane cycleway/parking path; the transition is barricaded off to cars but passable to foot and cycle traffic at the southern apex of the little triangular park. Thinking about it more, my guess would be that the original San Jose Ave was always straight NNE/SSW, and when Guerrero was widened and became the main connector to the Caltrans-owned 280 approach, the physical paving was redone to eliminate that intersection and make the 4-lane approach one contiguous roadway. I'll see if I can dig up the SF Assessor's survey maps to confirm any of that.

On the SF Assessor/Recorder map for block 6616 (the one west of San Jose/Guerrero between 28th and Valley), present-day lots 2-9 face this road segment. In 1954, a revision eliminated lots 2A-9A, consistent with widening the road as part of building the connector to I-280 (built 1955). According to the recorder, current lots 6616008 (658 San Jose) and 6616009 (660 and 662 San Jose) are the only lots along that road with San Jose Ave addresses; north of that point, lots 6616001-6616017 are 1600-1640 Guerrero St. (source at https://sfplanninggis.org/blockbooks/AssessorBlock6616.pdf) So if we went by street addresses, on the southbound (west) side the transition happens at 37.74497597571873, -122.42241116140848, while the northbound (east) side transitions at 37.745325562283845, -122.42218224371348. This isn't a precise answer to where in an official sense the physical roadway changes its name. The Assessor maps draw San Jose as far as the bend, but their intent is to show parcel boundaries, not precise road designations.

According to news articles the ships (except the Alma) have been moved to Mare Island/Vallejo and will remain there at least 3 years until the pier is rebuilt. So I have removed them for now. If someone knows where exactly they were moved, the objects could be moved there instead.

Looking at some way histories it seems like there's been some conflicting paid-mapper activity here over time.

The placeholder names may come from SF DPW, e.g. https://data.sfgov.org/Geographic-Locations-and-Boundaries/Map-of-Active-Streets-by-General-Class/f5ap-a94c. I recently matched named streets in this area to the SF DPW map. I think this concern is addressed.
