The preferred direction tag seems to be opposite direction. Or the way has been drawn in opposite direction. Preferred direction should be left, not right? Between Dampoort and Y. Oost Ledeberg.

OK, we reversed the direction of the tracks, they are now drawn in the same direction as railway traffic.

The line refs in the brussels north-south are tagged: L01, L02 and L03. In fact all three are line 0. With sublines 0-6. The current 01-03, reference the tunnel numbers, not the railway lines. There are already mappers (like @Sikal) who are patiently doing this tedious work of comparing open data from Infrabel with other sources to update OSM with correct data. I don’t think that flooding the map with notes saying "ECTS here, ECTS here" is useful. It will just make everyone’s work more complicated.
4~ 5 months agocommentedM_V_W
♦59
How does providing accurate data make something "complicated" ? How is providing all necessary information "flooding the map"? The only two notes that are not starting points, are there to make it easier and avoid confusion. I am well aware of Sikals work. Thanks. Oh and btw, it was on a fellow mappers requested to provide the data this way. Pin with start. Pin with end. Happy mapping.

Hello M_V_W, The image you present does not reflect reality, as it dates from July 2023. Today, both signals A800 and BX800 have an ‘ETCS1’ sign marking the start of the ETCS 1 FS zone. As Thierry explained, we're not supposed to use Google Street View images for OSM, although I know many do because they're of high quality. Generally speaking, mapping such attributes is not feasible with street images. To keep you informed about the deployment of ETCS in Belgium, here are two sources: - https://opendata.infrabel.be/explore/dataset/geo-etcs/ - Annex C-06 of the Infrabel DRR (https://infrabel.be/fr/networkstatement) Later, the Bleret - Leuven section will be equipped with ETCS 2 FS. Hoping to have informed you better, do not hesitate if you have further questions! :-) (translated from French with Deepl)
7~ 1 year agocommentedM_V_W
♦59
As explained previously you do not need the image. You can get the location of the signal using the amdm website, and derive its physical location from there. Since I am marking this as the beginning of ETCS L1, this signal indeed has a ETCS L1 marker board. It does not in the image since this the ETCS commisionning was after the image's date. By the end of 2025 all main lines will be equipped with ETCS.
8~ 1 year agocommentedM_V_W
♦59
The sources you mention are also not up to date as currently 79 percent of the network is equipped.

Note that in this case, the ETCS zone extends as far as the first signal bearing a crossed-out ‘ETCS’ plate. In the current situation, signals B779 (https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/12410995114) and AX779 (https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/12410995115) carry this plate. I've already mapped them As for the sources, I know they're not always up to date but they're the most accurate sources available to the public. Otherwise, getting to know train drivers is the best way of obtaining information about the infrastructure because they have to know it well ;-) Given that the current situation is the right one and that no changes are required, I suggest closing the note. :-)

Note that in this case, the ETCS zone extends as far as the first signal bearing a crossed-out ‘ETCS’ plate. In the current situation, signals B779 This is correct and I was aware of it. However, if you are driving in the opposite direction, you musn't drive in ETCS until my position. This difference can be up to 2 sections and thus 2-3km. It just depends on how you want to label it. In the direction of landen, you are correct, in the direction of Ans, I am. To me it seems logical to take the marker (start) board as this is the most restrictive.

♦59
The signals K-C.45 and KX-C.45 (in the direction of Waramme) at 76.005 also have a crossed out ETCS plate. How would you explain the zone ends at your location and not mine, since both have a crossed ETCS plate.
12~ 1 year agocommentedM_V_W
♦59
Clarification: The signals K-C.45 and KX-C.45 (in the direction of Waramme) at 76.005 also have a crossed out ETCS plate. How would you explain the zone ends at your location and not K-C/KX-C, since both have a crossed ETCS plate.
13~ 1 year agocommentedSikal
♦24
The reality is more complex, but I'll keep it simple: The crossed-out ETCS sign tells the driver that beyond this sign, he is no longer in the ETCS zone (the transition must have taken place upstream of this sign). In certain anomalies in the ETCS -> TBL1+ transition, the train may be stopped by emergency braking between the first ETCS crossed sign and the second. In this case, the driver must drive in a certain ETCS mode (Staff Responsible) up to the foot of the second signal where he will manually make the transition to TBL1+. The second ETCS crossed sign is therefore only useful in degraded situations and is not part of the ETCS zone which stops at the first signal with the ETCS crossed sign ;-)

♦59
Thanks! Didn't know that. Ill see if I can find some documentation on that since I still find it weird that he would have to drive in SR, outisde the ETCS zone. Or is this simply because E377 tells them to select SR? But then in a TBL-only zone SR doesnt make sense either. I do still think that the more restrictive a better representation, but I won't die on that hill. The Masterplan has Momalle as start of ETCS L2 *shrug*

Hello, ETCS L2 FS zone start at Puurs entry signal (K-Q.19, https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/3195755183). From K-Q.19 to here, the transition to ETCS 1 LS takes place and ETCS L2 is no longer the level used in both directions, so the track must be tagged with railway:etcs=1. If you know the exact location of the signal carrying the Start of ETCS Level 1 Limited Supervision zone sign, can you tag it like described in https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OpenRailwayMap/Tagging_in_Belgium ? :) Thank you !
8~ 8 months agocommentedM_V_W
♦59
Hi Sikal! We've had a similar discussion before: https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/4568267#map=11/50.6645/5.5042&layers=N While you are mostly* right in the direction of Puurs, the level transition 2->1 in the direction of Boom happens at the signal, which is located directly under my ping**. “Vanaf het sein XXXX richting Boom is op L52 ETCS L1 Limited Supervision van toepassing.” In any case, the level transition depends on the direction you're travelling. Going forward, neither is more correct than the other. If you can find OSM guidelines for this issue, please let me know. *Mostly because the transition 1-2 happens at a balise, not a signal (nor IBG/SBG). The signal simply tells the driver where he must be in the indicated level by the latest. However a transition from 2-1 indeed happens at a signal. **I am not mapping signals, as I have requested Infrabel to provide their data (they have their own GIS) but they declined on the basis of security (read sabotage etc).
9~ 8 months agocommentedM_V_W
♦59
You may scrap the 'mostly' part ;) as this is LS
10~ 8 months agocommentedSikal
♦24
Hi M_V_W, Thank you for your response ! :) As far as I know, there is no OSM guideline for this issue. Using the tag 'railway:etcs:forward/backward=*' should be possible, but I think creating a new tag for such a minor case is excessive. Personally, I use the most restrictive tag : A section that can be travelled under two ETCS levels is tagged with the lower one. ETCS L2 > ETCS L1 FS > ETCS L1 LS. This is a personal choice. In my opinion, the better way to provide a clear overview of a track's situation is to add signalling with personal knowledge, survey or cabrides (with the authorization of the author).
11~ 8 months agocommentedM_V_W
♦59
I am certainly not a fan of extra tags either. While choosing the most restrictive is generally a good practice, there's a reason to choose the opposite here. While trains may not receive movement authorities in ETCS L2 yet, a connection to the RBC is established (much) earlier/"disconnect" later. This has some benefits, and could be a reason to choose ETCS L2 tagging over L1(LS)
12~ 6 months agocommentedH4N5-antw
♦1,928
May I offer as my opinion that -given restricted public access to railtracks in general, and use of those tracks for travel other than in trains operated by mostly NMBS- the presence of ETCS and the limits of particular supervision levels and extent of zones is of limited significance?
