The sign is the last thing a navigator might see before turning into the cul de sac "De Ville Cir". Navigation services, Dallas County, and all maps excepting OpenStreetMap use "De Ville Cir". Navigators always come to the right place in Dallas, not Garland, if we spell the name out "D E space V I L L E Circle". Only openstreetmap is a problem. google.com/maps; Try to use "deville Cir" yields deville in the dropdown but then it resolves to "de Ville Cir" waze.com; deville is listed in the dropdown together with Dallas TX, Wichita Falls TX, Richardson TX, and Snelleville Georgia. Select Dallas and it resolves to "De Ville Cir", not Deville. Dallas County Appraisal District; maps.dcad.org spells the name on the map as "De Ville Cir" Bing.com maps; Bing, currently using TomTom maps, if given "deville cir" offers Garland TX, Suwanee GA, Buffalo NY, Wilmington DE. Give it "de Ville Cir" and it correctly offers Dallas, TX. TomTom has it correct at "de Ville Cir". MapQuest.com; if given "deville Cir" correctly resolves to "De Ville Cir". Randy Majors maps; http://randymajors.com/maps uses Google maps and offers only "De Ville Cir" ArcGIS.com; resolves from "deville cir" to "De Ville Cir" However, OpenStreeMap.com; search "2322 de ville cir dallas" and it gives "No results found". Only OpenStreeMap does this. Search "2322 deville Cir dallas" and it offers "2322, Deville Circle, Dallas County, Texas, 75232, United States. Still wrong, as the zip code is 75224-3606. The original import had "deville" which may have come from deeds as the display on Dallas County Appraisal District gives "deville" in the heading and "De Ville" on the maps and the list of data elements. The deeds pre-date USPS Zip Codes. | |

The deeds and import that f**ked up the spelling is what should be used. My garmin will map de ville cir to deville circle as it doesn't consider spaces or capitalization, but we should use what's on deeds not what people think it should be spelled like. had the same problem with humboldt and its mispellings - ended up living with the incorrect spelling if it's listed on signs with the wrong spelling even if doesn't match the guy's name. | |

Even the Dallas County Appraisal District uses "De Ville Cir" in the parsed database. Surely when towns change names you don't argue to keep the old names. Focus on the fact that United States Postal Service and Dallas County use "De Ville Cir". Otherwise, we have to remind people not to use OpenStreeMap. This is not a search engine problem. It's a map problem within OpenStreeMap. Again, all except OpenStreetMap happily resolve to "De Ville Cir." | |
