| 4654059 Category: unknown | 1 | ~ 1 year ago | opened | Striddler ♦36 | Not sure that it makes sense to tag a multi-hundred-acre area as a single contiguous sports pitch. And, while I'm not familiar with the current consensus around sport=motocross nor motorsports tagging more generally, I also question if it applies to this area at all. The primary designated use of trails & riding areas here is for ATVs, not specifically dirt bikes, and I wouldn't characterize the here as "enclosed off-road circuits." More context from from PA DCNR: https://elibrary.dcnr.pa.gov/GetDocument?docId=1742752&DocName=Whiskey_springs_map_w_txtl_4_22_16geo.pdf |
| 2 | ~ 1 year ago | commented | ForestFurnace ♦388 | Two wheeled motorcycles are prohibited on the Whiskey Springs ATV trails (and also the Bloody Skillet ATV trails in Sproul State Forest). Only Class I or II ATVs with 3 or more wheels are permitted on these trails, so the motocross tag should be removed as Motocross seems to refer to the two wheeled vehicles. Perhaps boundary=protected_area would be an appropriate tag for OSM since it is part of the DNCR operated Sproul State Forest. Do you happen to know whether "trailbikes" in the DCNR's "Motorcycles and trailbikes are not permitted" statement from the ATV areas' brochures refers to two-wheeled human powered pedal bikes (ex. Specialized Stumpjumper)? I am considering tagging the Bloody Skillet ATV trails as "bicycle/horse/foot: no", but I am not sure what DCNR defines as a "trailbike". I asked a DCNR ranger from a different forest, but the ranger wasn't sure. https://www.pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/atv-riding.html | |
| 3 | ~ 11 months ago | commented | Striddler ♦36 | Totally missed your reply... not sure on the trailbike question unfortunately. I'm also not sure a applying boundary=protected area is strictly necessary as it is well within the multipolygon for Sproul SF which already has appropriate tags. But on the other hand Whiskey Springs is both managed & regulated differently, and different enough from the surrounding forest, that I don't question the need for it to be mapped separately (vaguely similar to convention in PA for state forest Natural Areas and Wild Areas). We may have a similar conundrum once Catawissa Recreation Area in Weiser SF finishes redevelopment and is reopened to OHVs - that is a formerly privately-run OHV rec area which the DCNR purchased and is enhancing for future public OHV use. See https://www.pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-forests/find-a-forest/weiser/catawissa-rec-area.html. I'm afraid I haven't gotten around to taking more than a cursory glance at what (if anything) has been mapped elsewhere in PA or in other states for similar situations. Honestly all I've checked is the (privately-run) Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area in Schuylkill County, only to find that it isn't really even mapped as an area at all currently (just a random assortment of disjointed tracks - problem for future me I suppose). I will have to ponder this as other priorities allow. Open to suggestions from anyone. | |

| 5 | ~ 6 months ago | closed | Striddler ♦36 | Many months later... made some changes to the area. Not perfect and left a fixme. The more I look at what the DCNR says about who can ride here and when, the more I think the trails are going to need a monster of a conditional to truly reflect the rules. But for now, think it's a little better than it was before. | |

The ATV Riding page mentions "It is important to practice common courtesies when riding your ATV on a trail: ... Yield the right of way to bikes, horses, and hikers" https://www.dcnr.pa.gov/Recreation/WhatToDo/ATVRiding/pages/default.aspx The DCNR ATV policy does not mention anything for/against other users on ATV trail systems: https://elibrary.dcnr.pa.gov/GetDocument?docId=3454622&DocName=DCNR%20Final%20ATV%20Trail%20Policy%20-%20November%202020.pdf Michaux mentions "Motorcycles and trailbikes are not permitted on all-terrain vehicle trails." but no mentions of hikers/horses, and it is unclear whether "trailbikes" are motorized off-road vehicles or human powered pedal bicycles (which would lead to bicycle: no). On other DCNR maps, non-motorized pedal bikes are referred to as "mountain biking" or "bike" in the map legend. I asked a state park ranger about this and the ranger was not sure. |
| 2 | ~ 8 months ago | commented | Striddler ♦36 | Not sure about official DCNR policies or what trailhead signage might say, but from a practical standpoint many PA SF ATV trails are open to ATV users only seasonally, and in the 'off' season are used by (at minimum) hunters, hikers, and cross-country skiiers. That said, I see Whiskey Springs touts both summer and winter trails, so not sure that happens much at this particular area. Might be best to just to email the forest district. | |

| 2 | ~ 8 months ago | commented | Striddler ♦36 | In terms of well-established OSM tags, amenity=marketplace fits the bill. This is a marketplace where many farmers (and other vendors) sell their goods, not a single unified shop. https://www.lewisburgfarmersmarket.com/ | |
| 3 | ~ 8 months ago | closed | Striddler ♦36 | Removed unconventional shop=farmers_market, added amenity=marketplace, and made some other updates to its tags. To the broader question of what is meant by Farmers Market in the US, there are multiple usages, sometimes pretty different from each other but sometimes the distinctions get a bit blurry. Still, more common tags can probably be used in basically every case without needing to define anything new. Sometimes a Farmers Market is basically shop=farm, sometimes more like shop=greengrocer, sometimes more of a shop=general, often amenity=marketplace, sometimes even just a shop=supermarket in a funny hat. | |

| 4517634 Category: unknown | 1 | ~ 1 year ago | opened | mitchellzzz | This pedestrian bridge is fenced off at both sides so it is not accessible. Even without the fencing, each side has stairs so it would not be suitable for bicycle routing. |
| 2 | ~ 11 months ago | commented | Striddler ♦36 | Is there any signage on the fencing to the effect of do not enter, no trespassing, closed by landowner/railroad/borough, etc.? If not then access=private or access=no would be difficult to support as they describe legality of access, not suitability or ease of access (and for that matter bicycle=no would not be appropriate for a footbridge where there is no bike gutter UNLESS it is outright illegal to attempt to ride or carry a bike across). However, signage or no, if there a barrier with no gate (or locked gate) at both ends it certainly can be mapped and routers will typically take that into account. | |
| 3 | ~ 11 months ago | commented | mitchellzzz | I do not recall signage, but each side had fixed chain link fencing at the top of the stairs (no gates or anything for private access) for the full width of the bridge, so it is a barrier at both ends. (I rerouted so as to double back to South Sillyman Street in order to access Wilder Street, where I saw that the other side of the bridge had the same fencing situation.) | |
| 4 | ~ 11 months ago | commented | Striddler ♦36 | Alright. I've eyeballed a pair of barrier=fence ways spanning either end of the bridge which should result in most sensible routing engines avoiding this path whenever they get the update. If this is the same footbridge referenced in the following two local news articles then it sounds like the borough had it formally closed as of 2022 until repairs occur, in which case access=no (potentially combination with construction-related tagging) would make sense as long as it is verifiable with the borough. https://www.republicanherald.com/2022/02/08/cressona-footbridge-scheduled-for-inspection-repairs/ https://www.republicanherald.com/2023/03/16/development-transportation-projects-in-schuylkill-county-awarded-over-44-million-in-state-grants/ | |

| 2 | ~ 11 months ago | commented | Striddler ♦36 | Don't personally have local knowledge of this but from what I can find online and looking at imagery, it seems like this is long-disused, but some of the infrastructure still exists. Was meant as a settling basin to combine water from Scotch Run and a bypass tunnel from another reservoir, before flowing into Lake Altoona. Local media from 2017 indicated that the bypass tunnel had been closed off for a long time but I believe there there is an open-air portion of the bypass visible by Cochran Reservoir - look for the revolting yellow color flows under a road and disappears. This might be channelized portion of Kittaning Run. There are signs of that same yellow color along the east side the Scotch Run Reservoir area. It looks to me like this is combining with Scotch Run, then flowing into another bypass channel south of the dam & east of emergency spillway, and eventually combining with Lake Altoona's outflow. | |
