I don't understand this bit of road. You can split away from JBLM to head towards the diamond interchange / overpass to the east--but you can also head towards this road by keeping left a few hundred feet before on the exit ramp-- is this in case of misdirected drivers who didn't realize they would be making a right into JBLM? Or something else?
2~ 2 months agocommentedTrod Skunk
♦22
It’s an “oopsie” lane, yup
3~ 2 months agocommentedTrod Skunk
♦22
There’s a good chance that the final build will not include this and the road split will occur closer to the intersection.
4~ 2 months agocommentedpwbriggs
♦749
Ah, that's a little silly; good to know it's not a mistake in the diagram. I thought this was already constructed, no? Did I mark roads as opened prematurely?

okay. Looks like a mapper from Lyft ruther updated around this intersection. I don't have time at the moment to look into this more thoroughly--does what's mapped now look correct for https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1491944461?

Wsdot put a couple pics on Flickr showing final build. June 3 photos. Left lane continues straight to interchange, right 2 lanes go right onto JBLM. Paint is not final in picture, but at least the road pavement is shown mostly done.

This is 714 D, the three-bldg complex to the left is 714 A-C, though I can’t figure out which exactly is which (of the A-C). This whole block has the same address otherwise.

Where does this sidewalk go? (https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/7073597907) WSDOT's rendering (https://wsdot.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2023-06/I-5SteilacoomDuPontRdJBLM-Stage3-Design-visualization-Atkinson.JPG) shows it continuing off to the west, but this is just a freeway ramp. Is the rendering wrong, or does it connect to some parking lot etc. to the west?

Mapping out the pedestrian routing into and around the stadium is an awesome challenge I hope someone will take up. There are no official maps so this would require boots on the ground and aerial imagery. This would just be for public access, not anything behind locked doors. Or at the very least routing pedestrians up to the gates and drop a gate there and stop. There’s at least two entrances, one on north and one on south.

Is this freeway on-ramp (https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1472983843) signalized? This one doesn't have a crosswalk.

Correct, no signal

Okay. I wasn't sure because it looks like a stop line here in the WSDOT rendering. Thanks for confirming.

Can road users heading west on the two-way road make a sharp right to head back east?
2~ 2 months agocommentedpwbriggs
♦749
Now that my edits are uploaded: that is, should there be a turn restriction marked on https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/13672578422 stating that westbound traffic must turn into JBLM? Or is that not the case?

Thanks for working on this. I did some more updates based on my understanding of this project (not personally familiar with this exit though). Can you check if they look good? Particularly, is the old overpass (at Clark and Barksdale) now north-north-west-bound traffic only? My understanding is that this bridge will be closed entirely soon, but for now it's still open to that direction? Let me know

this illustration seems to describe it the best: https://wsdot.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2023-06/I-5SteilacoomDuPontRdJBLM-Stage3-Design-visualization-Atkinson.JPG

♦749
Oh, that's a great rendering. Thanks for the link! But it sounds like there's still work to be done to get to that point? I was under the impression that Clark road overpass hasn't been removed yet and is still serving some traffic, but maybe I have outdated info. I have no on-the-ground experience here.
6~ 4 months agocommentedTrod Skunk
♦22
Yes, it’s still in progress. Clark Rd bridge is still there.
7~ 4 months agocommentedpwbriggs
♦749
Cool. So when the highway=construction roads I mapped open, they can be replaced with the correct highway=* tag (e.g. the highway=construction + construction=motorway_link can be changed to highway=motorway_link)
8~ 3 months agocommentedpwbriggs
♦749
According to WSDOT, the rest of the interchange will open this Saturday the 21st, weather-permitting, and the old bridge will close. Demolition of the old bridge is scheduled for April 3-4.
9~ 2 months agocommentedTrod Skunk
♦22
Old bridge is now closed to all traffic. Diagrams showing the new complex traffic movements are here: https://engage.wsdot.wa.gov/i-5-mounts-to-steilacoom-dupont-rd/ Note that there’s both one-way and two-way sections of roadway mixed together including a two-way section paralleling a one-way section. Yikes!

I've done some more edits for lane tagging and signals, etc. I think this area is in relatively good shape now, except for precise alignment which will need to be done with aerial imagery when it eventually comes out, and/or with some amount of GPS tracing (probably not). I'm looking forward to cleaning up the old bridge soon at the start of April!

Do these new roads have names? What about the new bridge?
2~ 4 months agocommentedTrod Skunk
♦22
It’s all a weird interchange with direction arrows. No names. Though that might change. So maybe this all is a giant set of Links and no Secondary?
3~ 4 months agoclosedpwbriggs
♦749
Hmm. I don't quite know the line between a link vs a road. Road classification in general is often fuzzy in OSM. But, considering the planned road network, I think this segment is kind of an extension of Clark Rd (from a network perspective, not a naming one), so it might make more sense as a highway=secondary. Though I agree that it is a bit awkward because heading eastbound on this segment you're forced to get on the I-5 North entrance. When this is all built out and the signs are up, it would probably be good to go through and clean up the destination=* tags and related. Especially in an interchange-like area (and especially when roads don't have names per se) I think that's very useful data for navigation etc. ("follow signs for I-5 north, seattle") Happy mapping!

Is this a two-way road yet per its note=*? oneway=* was removed. Also, is highway=motorway_link most appropriate here? Is this seen as a continuation of both the on-ramp and the off-ramp?
2~ 4 months agocommentedTrod Skunk
♦22
This is a two-way road now. Plans show it bring split into two one-way roads
3~ 4 months agocommentedpwbriggs
♦749
Can you check what I've updated it to now? I think the WSDOT rendering shows a two-way and a one-way here.

Wow! This is great! Need to move back the fence that’s crossing the roadway, and you’ve fixed all else!
5~ 4 months agocommentedpwbriggs

Thanks, I spent a while on it ☺️ Ah, I didn't realize that it had moved over there as well, good catch.
6~ 4 months agocommentedpwbriggs
♦749
Moved the fence. As far as I can see in the aerials, it ends shorter than previously. But it also looks like there's another wall, though I can't tell if that's just the edge of the road.

What are the sidewalks like here, now that (I think) the off-ramp is closed here?
2~ 4 months agocommentedNatfoot

not going to matter for much longer. all the exiting for 20 years bridges in this area of I-5 are scheduled for removal. the are to short and not wide enough for I-5 expansion.

What's the intersection geometry here? Can vehicles travel north on the overpass? Traveling east, do they go through the traffic calming islands before making a left onto the overpass? Can vehicles heading southbound on the overpass turn to the I-5 northeast-bound on-ramp?
2~ 4 months agocommentedTrod Skunk

The part of the secondary road (bridge) that is south of the traffic signal is one-way south. The part north of the traffic signal into the roundabout is two-way.

Road was reconnected on the south end - looks like it became disconnected. I'm not seeing any signs or indication from street imagery that it is "private" here
8~ 4 months agocommentedCurlingMan13
♦52,955
This segment is not private. It is only private once you hit the military base further north of here. Access tags on all points north of where it crosses onto base were set. access=private private=military Because there is no access or signage until that point, this segment should not be marked private. Let me know if you disagree. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/washington/country-joe-s-to-nisqually-river-cliffs
