~ 10 months ago | closed | justinsenemy ♦210 | Thanks! I added it as a grass paver surface tag with plastic as the material. This follows what others in the OSM community have done with beach access mats. https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/how-to-tag-a-beach-access-mat/117536/6 |
| 4709714 Category: unknown | 1 | ~ 1 year ago | opened | DENelson83 ♦2,303 | There are a LOT of houses in Vancouver whose street addresses are missing on OpenStreetMap. If any Vancouver-based mappers are able to, I would like them to walk around these neighbourhoods and record the addresses of as many houses as they can. |
~ 1 year ago | commented | akana932 ♦8 | Forgive me if this has already been considered, I'm new to editing, but why not reference the municipal land parcel map (VanMap)? It's all publicly available. https://maps.vancouver.ca/patio_permits/ |
~ 11 months ago | commented | QuigleyJones ♦3,053 | you can import the data from https://opendata.vancouver.ca/explore/dataset/property-addresses/information/ Maybe ask keithonearth_imports who added the buildings |
~ 11 months ago | commented | DENelson83 ♦2,303 | Has the "Open Government Licence - Vancouver" been properly vetted for compatibility with OSM? |
~ 11 months ago | commented | fmarier ♦1,205 | See https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:AdamWill/Imports/Vancouver_property_addresses for the legal implications. It sounds like it would be okay, but it's probably best to check with AdamWill and PNorman. |
~ 11 months ago | commented | fmarier ♦1,205 | Also, huge +1 on this kind of import. I did downtown + West End manually a few years ago and it took a loooong time. |
~ 11 months ago | commented | DENelson83 ♦2,303 | Well, incidentally, I surveyed all of Qualicum Beach's street addresses in person last year. It took me nine weekends to cover the whole town. |
~ 5 months ago | commented | keithonearth ♦1,768 | Whether or not we do an import, I think it's important to be aware that the Vancouver address dataset from the CoV is not 100% accurate. There seems to be two issues with it, both of which stem from the fact that it is a map of the addresses of land parcels, not a map of all addresses. So when a single building takes up more than one parcel it has two nodes usually/always with the same address. More importantly when a land parcel has more than one address, only one is in the dataset. I've just been viewing the dataset in JOSM, looking at areas I manually added addresses to, and cannot find a single example of a building with more than one address in reality that has more than one in the dataset. When I did the building trace import, I checked on both the Wiki and the mailing list, and the only comments I got were in support of the licences being compatible, as long as the source was noted. If we do an import of addresses, I think it's important to include a fixme tag, or something else to track that the address has been imported w/o checking in person, so we can check for buildings with more than one address. The import itself wouldn't be particularly skilled, at least the way I'd do it. Open the CoV data in a separate layer in Josm, and copy and paste into the OSM layer, building by building. It would also take some pre-proccessing, so that the tags would match OSM standards, like changing streetname tags to not be in ALLCAPS. |
~ 4 months ago | commented | DENelson83 ♦2,303 | And this is why on-the-ground surveys would be preferred here. |
~ 4 months ago | commented | keithonearth ♦1,768 | Certainly, on the ground surveys produce the best results, the trade off is the amount of time they take. Vancouver is far behind other cities, for address data. |
~ 3 months ago | commented | Sieva ♦46 | I think doing an import of non-existing addresses is the way to go. |

~ 11 months ago | closed | fmarier ♦1,205 | This is probably not the best way to do this since the arch is actually quite high and there's not that many floors in that part of the building, but at least it's clear that footpath doesn't go inside. https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/167332785 |

~ 11 months ago | commented | Nivalys ♦15 | Thanks for the like, I stopped at the entrance of the citizen salon. I was as deep as possible in the building, but since there were no indications of any sort, I ended up turning back. Is it relevant to map this address? since it is buried in the bottom of a building in the middle of dozens of companies that are not mapping either (because inside the building) |
~ 11 months ago | commented | Nivalys ♦15 | *thanks for the link |
~ 11 months ago | commented | fmarier ♦1,205 | You're right, it's probably not super useful given how hard it is to find, but I guess if it does actually exist, maybe we shouldn't remove? It's not actually wrong (or a spam entry like the online businesses that just randomly put pins downtown) if it's still open to the public. |
~ 11 months ago | commented | Nivalys ♦15 | I'll take a look next time, maybe I'll try to map the inside of the building. Do you know a tool for the insides? I think I have seen one, but I don't remember the name. |
