Is this pitch part of the school?

No, it's in an area for the youth centre, fenced off from the school. I've added youth centre details from https://www.eani.org.uk/youth-online/youth-centres/lenamore-youth-centre

There is a structural fault in this block of flats. I think all the residents have been moved out pending repairs. Some high-vis guys are always hanging about outside. The Tesco is boarded up, but the sign is still visible. https://www.newhamrecorder.co.uk/news/25690196.stratford-halo-blocks-evacuated-cracking-discovered/

Probably best to indicate this on the Tesco amenity in some way. It seems like it could be months before it reopens. Maybe mess with the opening_hours? Or remove the amenity tag?

https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1360397247 https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1360397136 Are these the same shop? One of them says it is a temporary location?

It says that one of them is unit 1021 and the other 1019 but the address on the website is 223-224? https://www.jdsports.co.uk/store-locator/westfield/924/
3~ 10 days agocommentedspiregrain
♦2,362
I think it's another case of one shop on multiple floors. I added the unit numbers from the original planning application for the whole mall. So in the indoor schema, it's two rooms, each with a different unit number on a different level. BUT only one "shop" amenity. So I guess it should have the same treatment as Primark next door? (Incidentally, the official Westfield map also counts it as two shops.) I'll have a look at it this evening and let you know whether the two levels have their own independent vertical transport. (Primark and a lot of the multilevel shops have their own escalators)

Thanks - I was going to update as Primark but thought I'd better check as one of them said it was temporary.

Should this whole tree-covered area be named "Coronation Grove" per the plaque?
2~ 29 days agocommentedharg
♦3,737
Hmm, a web search for +"coronation grove" +wanstead doesn't find anything. What does the plaque actually say?
3~ 29 days agocommentedharg
♦3,737
I wonder if it is this: https://news.cityoflondon.gov.uk/epping-forest-silver-birch-grove-planted-in-memory-of-her-late-majesty-queen-elizabeth-ii/. The story possibly fits, amd relates to Wanstead Flats but there's no specific mention of the name of the grove. If the trees are Silver Birch then I reckon together with the plaque it justifies adding the name on OSM with the above as a website link. But it's sad that the City of London hasn't seen fit to mention the name and ensure it is searchable.
4~ 29 days agocommentedspiregrain
♦2,362
It's here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wanstead%20Flats%2C%20Coronation%20Grove%2C%20plaque%2001.jpg?uselang=en-GB Part of it's broken off, but I make it: "These trees ??? emorate the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 1953 ??? raised by ??? ubscription." Plausibly: These trees commemorate the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 1953 funds raised by public subscription. Googling "Coronation Grove" and "Wanstead Flats" implies that at least some people are using that name for something somewhere on the flats.
5~ 29 days agocommentedspiregrain

Both a pharmacy and post office, survey needed to check its primary purpose
2~ 2 years agocommentedharg
♦3,737
This is very common for modern post offices. The pharmacy will be the primary business and the post office will have a reserved area (possibly, just a counter) accessed via the pharmacy. They will not (usually) have a separate entrance. After verification it will probably be appropriate to map the building as a pharmacy and the post office as a point node within it.

I've made some changes to add the other businesses in this block. I think the entrance to the Centre is more at the northern end of the block, so I've moved it there. Does it look right to you now?
3~ 2 months agocommentedEnglandGeoMapper8349

Can't really tell to be honest. I've checked on GMaps is that it should be between 'All Seasons Letting' and another store 'Viva Lifestyle' (not added to map) - so like a gap or so, south of 'All Seasons Letting' - but it could be an outdated pic because my memory of the entrance is a bit foggy, so I'm now trying to confirm with someone if it is there. Thanks

Nice smooth tarmac surfaces. No signage or paint to permit or exclude cyclists explicitly. no links to marked cycleway at Northgate Road. in fact, two heavy sprung gates at east end which would be an annoying obstacle to cycling. NG Road and Fielders Crescent would be a better route I think.

Possibly related to the Battle of Saintfield? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Saintfield But I'm not certain the plaque in that Wikipedia page's image is at this location. Yes... and no. Signage on the building shows that it's part of the school, although specifically it's the nursery school. In force from "1pm to 6pm on any Sunday, when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed" but "It is anticipated that this prohibition will only apply on four days per year" (which is very Newham). THE NEWHAM (PLAY STREET) (NO. 1) ORDER 2016 https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/2541170

♦2,362
The original anonymous commenter appears to be asking whether the road north of Godwin Road is now called "Play Street".
6~ 3 months agocommentedharg
♦3,737
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/2541170 still says the order is anticipated to apply on only four days per year, and the order refers to it as Tylney Road. So unless there has since been an updated traffic order the presently mapped name seems to be correct.

Perhaps just tag it with traffic_intervention=play_street and/or designation=play_street ? Neither of these are in the wiki, but would at least have some record in OSM.
11~ 3 months agocommentedharg
♦3,737
@rskedgell: personally I would just check to see whether the traffic order has been officially signed (ie, using official highway codes, not by fancy paint in the road) and close the note if it seems that enforcement signage is limited to railings put out for the specific dates. We don't, for example, tag short term closures for WNBR or Lord Mayor's show days.

Apologies, that note should have been addressed to @spiregrain.

♦2,362
So my findings were: - The on-street paint is in a poor state of repair. I think it might not be easy to tell that it says "Play Street" if you didn't already know. This applies to both of the marks. There are two hinged Newham street signs at the west side of the street at the North and South corners. I assume these can be opened up when the play street is in effect. There is no signage on the neighbouring streets.

Step, impractical for bikes #OsmAnd
2~ 6 months agocommentedrskedgell
♦2,511
If there's no signage to indicate that cycling is explicitly permitted (and I don't think there is), bicycle permeability isn't really an issue here. Does it present a barrier to wheelchair accessibility?
3~ 6 months agocommentedmgrant
♦2
From memory, my issue wasn't that cycles weren't permitted, my issue was that it was impractical for bikes because in that tight space there was a bend and some steps. I think I had to pick my bike up for a few feet. There might have been a handrail (don't remember). My issue is really about routing in that it's probably best not to route bikes through this tight alley with the steps. It's not like there isn't a much better way around the other way. Feel free to delete this note if you think this issue is too minor. For me, it was just one of those "oh jeez, bikes shouldn't be routed down this" moments of frustration.
4~ 6 months agocommentedrskedgell
♦2,511
The note is useful because it identifies a problem. In this case, we have a path which has only been tagged as highway=footway since it was added to the map in 2008. It's never had any bicycle=* tags, so cycle routing software shouldn't be trying to use it in the first place. I appreciate that this was 3 months ago, but can you remember which routing software and profile you were using? In the mean time, it wouldn't hurt to add bicycle=no to the way. It's technically redundant and might not fix the underlying problem. https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/28982999/history
5~ 6 months agocommentedrskedgell
♦2,511
PS I'll try to go there tomorrow and add the step(s), which might also discourage bicycle routing.
6~ 6 months agocommentedmgrant
♦2
Great. I hope I am not misremembering the step! Let me know what you find. I was using OsmAnd on my phone. I did some searching and it appears to have its own custom routing engine.
7~ 6 months agocommentedharg
♦3,737
Mapping the steps (including the number of steps) and any other barrier is the correct solution. The router can then decide whether there is a better route. But even without the step mapped, the router is probably at fault if it is using a footway without instructing the cyclist to dismount for its entire length. If there's no better route, that would sometimes be a better alternative than a long detour, but the router should not be encouraging breaking the law if there is nothing to indicate that bicycles are legally permited. We don't have a bicycle=inconvenient tag and bicyle=no implies a specific legal prohibition according to https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Bicycle. So that would technically only be correct if there is signage or other evidence of the legal prohibition.
8~ 6 months agocommentedrskedgell
♦2,511
No steps on this section, just flat asphalt. No signs prohibiting or allowing cycling, so best left tagged as highway=footway without access tags. Attached photo(s): https://streetcomplete.app/p/314016.jpg

If there's also a stop line for cyclists, then I don't think it's a toucan. I don't think it's a pelican crossing either, so maybe we could delete the crossing_ref for now, as the other tags should be enough for most data consumers. It might be a sparrow crossing, although there's not a lot of information on them, e.g. https://www.activetravelengland.gov.uk/planning-active-places/crossings

What are these buildings clustered around the Church? On the old NLS maps they're labelled "School", but perhaps this use has been replaced by the modern-looking Primary School to immediately to the west. (St. Dominic's Catholic Primary School) If these buildings are part of the church community, perhaps they should get lumped in with the church in a landuse=religious.

This road has a name according to the gazetteer; name possibly shared with the east-west road segment between Mercier Court (the building) and the DLR line. Is it signed?

There isn't any signage on the ground for this section. The street signage also suggests Royal Crest Avenue is a continuation of the section that joins to the road at North Woolwich Road, so it's not clear what the name of the road is between that junction and the one with Starboard Way. The address of Starbucks may be the necessary clue for the pedestrianised part: 5 Halyard Place, London - see https://www.starbucks.co.uk/store-locator/49582-270032/royal-wharf-starboard-way Johns & Co is 4 Halyard Place - https://www.johnsand.co/offices/royal-wharf Jiamart address is 5 Starboard Way

In fact, they had it under construction, and got up to about 3-4 stories high, then noticed it was falling apart. So the whole thing was demolished and the site cleared. It was still clear earlier this month. From the LLDC planning portal, it looks like they'll try again with the same overall design (but presumably with stronger stuff / better structural design?)
