Hi there. This is sort of on my patch, so I could update. Is there any identifiable building here for the cafe-bar? That's what we need for it to be mappable, but all I see in satellite is a hedge where this note is.

"Western end" of Cuckoo Lane close for 5 months, according to the Clarion: https://oxfordclarion.uk/clarion-weekly-24-october-2025/. Is that enough to mark it closed to foot? Not sure it it's here exactly, but it's to be closed "until 30 March for “repairs to improve accessibility”", and this section is on a big slope...

Yikes. I'll see what I can do. Good spot! So to document the situation, this one, https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/2392043906, is the cafe/bar visible in the photo at https://www.bestwestern.fr/en/hotel-Oxford-Best-Western-Linton-Lodge-Hotel-83647, and it seems to have always been positioned correctly for that purpose. However, it has data from the 99 Gloucester Green "The Spires" cafe mixed in, which is our https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/12050789742 and its owners' https://www.thespirescafe.com/. And our node for the 99GG one has always been where it is now for its year and a bit of existence. Just in case @ist410 is coming in from a tool or applying automated edits to a node cached by ID somewhere, I think I ought to delete and recreate the Linton Road one that's attracted the wrong edits, and make sure that the new one is clearly the one that's part of Linton Lodge somehow.
3~ 2 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
The nodes have the same FHRS ID currently, which is incorrect[^1], but it probably explains how the mistakes happened, given the breadth of the changesets. The same user has edited both, but more of the edits went to the wrong one (as predicted by sod's law). Maybe I needn't delete anything, just correct. In other words, there are now additional restrictions around school opening and closing times, which should be signposted by the road already. I think there's enough info on the two information board nodes now to cover this. OSM objects aren't supposed to be a place to record every word really, just the title/name. The OSM object looks good to me, so I'll mark this note as resolved now. Photos on Notes disappear some weeks after their Note is marked resolved, so please consider them as transient aids to mapping. If you really want to preserve this image, consider uploading it to Wikimedia Commons and linking it on the object. → https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:image → https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:wikimedia_commons Some people like to link into Wikidata for some OSM objects too, and from there to everything else. Normally I think that's too much, though. → https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:wikidata

North Oxford golf club to close and be redeveloped as housing in late October 2025 (h/t to the Oxford Clarion again!) https://www.thisisoxfordshire.co.uk/news/25427673.oxford-university-plans-build-new-homes-golf-club/ Submissions to Cherwell District council show the redevelopment covering the entire area: https://www.cherwell.gov.uk/site-search/results/?q=PR6b The wider aspects of the Cherwell Local Plan 2011-2031 are summarised in the first result, "PR6b Land West of Oxford Road Development Brief Cherwell District Council August 2022", and that's well worth a look too. However, this OSM note is just about the immediate aspects of the golf club being shuttered soon: "disused:" prefixes for all the buildings, holes and fairways, I guess. Won't be a building site for a bit, I imagine.

Address interpolations cannot run along the outside of a building, and these addresses will not work correctly. These need an interpolation way instead, leading from somewhere near the main entrance to "inside", away from the main entrance to convey corect meaning, if we can't go inside and find where all the corridors and staircases really are :) Separate stairway-exclusive address ranges work similarly, if there's an external door to the siaircase. See Cooper House and Marina House for how it's supposed to be done. Since these are street addresses, not flat addresses, the house name is unneccessary for the address. The only alternatives is addr:place and addr:parentstreet, but that's very counterintuitive. It is sufficient if all the addresses as interpolated are within the building outline. addr:housename has the same level of meaning as addr:housenumber. It is not subordinate.
2~ 4 months agocommentedgmar5
♦569
The wiki at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Addresses#Interpolation says: > Some mappers use addr:interpolation=* on a single object to indicate that its addr:housenumber=* is to be treated as a range rather than an atomic label (discussed above). There is not a consensus on whether this is appropriate. I am one of those mappers. The interpolation tag on the same object as the number range is clean and makes perfect logical sense. Since there is no consensus and both methods are documented, I don't think we can say that it "cannot go" there or how it is "supposed to be done". Creating a fictional interpolation segment, where numbers are in fact not between the two physical locations, looks like tagging for the renderer (or search engine) in my opinion. If the search engine cannot find an address, it is a problem of the engine, not necessarily of the tagging method. On your second point, addresses here look like this: FLAT 2, COOPER HOUSE, WILLIAM MORRIS CLOSE, OXFORD, OX4 2DE It happens that the flat numbers also seem to follow the street numeration, so addr:housenumber might be more useful than addr:flats, but in any case the building name should be part of the address, and addr:housename seems more appropriate and intuitive than addr:parentstreet.

There is a new public artwork scattered around Oxford North now, in 8 parts: https://www.instagram.com/p/DPOp3rQj9ek/ "Your planetary assembly", 2025, by (Studio) Olafur Eliasson. Marker position approximate, of course. "Eight glass polyhedrons spread across Fallaize Park [that] invite you to gather, talk, spend time, and share space with one another", says the Instagram post. So presumably the site is now publicly accessible on foot from at least one of the two surrounding urban motorways that have bike tracks? Have to check. (h/t @proseandpassion@mastodon.social)

They're accessible, and used to the extent that the grass is trodden. I've been able to walk all the way around Carrot Hill this evening. Also there's a bird hide or shooting stand at the edge of a coppiced depression, facing onto what is currently a stubble field. I'll add it separately. Not much in the way of "private land" signage, as there is elsewhere on this land, the idea is you follow the telegraph wires at the fork (!) I think we should go with private footpath tagging. Location of the security fence and any gates though it should be mapped. There's one or two here, just beyond the public-side cafe, from memory. Might want to present yourself at site security first. Their portakabin is near Airspeed House, to the ESE. They seemed pretty chill about the idea when I asked: I was just told "no photos please, and don't go beyond the yellow gates". The AerOx development will be opening soon, so it might all be worth a long revisit. And the cafe's OK too. #SurveyMe

Vague report ("purple building"?), no clarification for years, and the site is rapidly changing. I'm going to close this note and replace with a more specific one. The place where this note is is airport-side too, and private enough that the general public can't readily survey it. The location of the security fences and gates should be mapped, however.

The main road is Station Approach according to OS Openmap Local (April 2025) and other sources, and the northern bit of the business park is confusingly named Station Field (as if it was the road name, argh.)

Check bus stop local_refs on the ground for this one, plus the 2 down Cowley Road and also the 2 down Iffley Road named "The Plain". Do they have any real local area reference numbers on them? Those are the numbers or letters shown on that pole-top lollipop as seen at the big stop areas like Headington/Westgate/the JR. This one won't, probably. It's only used by tour buses, and it perhaps doesn't even have a real sign or markings. NaPTAN knows about it though, and it's a part of the tourist bus route. It's a bit difficult to tell what's physically present while the Waynflete Annexe redevelopment boards and scaffolding are up, however. It's small pieces of grit, held together by something, but I need to go back to really check what it is. I think it would be worth discussing adding a 'non-slip' value to the surface key. The main quality of the surface here is not exactly what it's made of but the fact it's grippy.

Closing, since this was just an illustration and there's nothing to do from it. I hope we're all happy with the way level=* and level:ref=* work for the complex now. It's wiki-mandated OSM standard™, but it also reflects the operators' floor numbering (even though they have an upper and a lower ground. Does the mapping need a wiki page entry? Much of it can probably be explained by referring to the lifts: https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/5186653717 is the best example. Now, who wants to do the JR site? There, their site "-2" ought really to represented as level=0 + level:ref=-2 😵‍💫

The Swanbrook 853 bus to Cheltenham got bought up by Stagecoach https://www.thebridgeburford.co.uk/post/stagecoach-takes-over-oxford-burford-cheltenham-bus-route, and turned into or merged with the S2 https://bustimes.org/registrations/PH0005863/87 https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/20683478.stagecoach-cut-witney-banbury-bus-routes/ (contrary to the Oxford Mail, the S2X to Carterton is still operational, however? https://bustimes.org/services/s2x-oxford-carterton) This affects the following routes of ours, which all need merging or reworking into the new S2 and S2X services (and converting to PTv2 at the same time) Bus 853: https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/190677 Defunct route number, but it is probably what the S2 does now, give or take Bus S2: https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/2165739 Currently on OSM as Oxford→Witney→Carterton, but it's now Oxford→Cheltenham direct https://bustimes.org/services/s2-curbridge-witney-oxford-2 Bus S2X: https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/2165739 Needs renaming from "S2 Express" but broadly OK once it's PTv2 https://bustimes.org/services/s2x-oxford-carterton

Should Elsfield Road and Oxford Road through Marston be tertiary? Pro: - they distribute village traffic to the more major roads, library, and schools - route to the Victoria Arms for visitors - a bus route - certainly a bit more than just residential minor roads Cons: - still quite narrow - no centre line (but many far clearer tertiaries within Oxford don't have them either) - restricted to destination only (unless you're a bus) Potential consequences: Probably Old Marston Road in New Marston is tertiary too, if these are.

After having a think, I'm going to say no. All those traffic calming measures and the restricted through traffic make it a fairly horrible tertiary road experience.

Encountered a duplicated 55 here on the end of what I've redone as an odd-number 'addr:interpolation'. I've demoted it to 53, but the numbering might need checking. [for info and to save me the bother of remembering it in future]: Based on the Mogridge Drive numbering, these are street addresses ('addr:housenumber') that just happen to be physically inside an apartment block. That means the building name does not form part of the address: they can't each individually be "Russet House", that's a separate object. If they were 'addr:unit's, things would be different, but they aren't. 'addr:interpolation' cannot interpolate 'addr:unit' or 'addr:flats', just 'addr:housenumber' nodes on the end, *such* a pain. Blame the folks who came up with the Karlsruhe addressing schema for OSM, not me!

Route and bus stop for X40 missing
2~ 1 year agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
The bus stop location here is on OSM now. There's only a single PTv1 route (I think) for the X40, so that could do with some work. Apparently, only a late-night variant route goes through Littlemore, 2 buses a day, and it must've been missed off for that reason. The existing X40 rel, https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/295458 needs updating to a PTv2 route, and I think it should have 4 variations based on https://www.oxfordbus.co.uk/services/THTR/X40 (commercial, based on open data) and https://bustimes.org/services/x40-oxford-city-centre-westgate-reading-town-cen-2 (open data: even the timetable, I think). Variants ought to be based on different paths, not different start or end times, I guess (handwave).
3~ 8 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
Slowly getting there on this one. I've updated https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/295458 as a route_master grouping of the two main variants of the X40. Should be easier to add minor X40 variations now, as well as the cut-down NX40 between Wallingford and Oxford. For these stops, it's the last two Oxford-bound X40s of a weekday, and all of the NX40s.

The middle #-shape of sidewalks need adding here, along with crossings where peoplw would actually cross. Also need to check tags, since I think footway=sidewalk is missing from a lot of them, and there were a few sidewalk=separate tags on the sidewalks themselves. Honestly, this is probably too much detail for most residential estates while we're still getting the pavements mapped on major roads. I'll still be prioritising those over this area. They do join up the park, shops, churches, and major road though, and this old 1930s(?) estate at least has interestingly shaped pavements to map.
2~ 8 months agocommentedgmar5
♦569
Hi. I just wanted to note that sidewalks need to be regularly linked to the roads, even if there are no technical crossings (maybe at intersections? unless crossing is explicitly impossible), otherwise routing becomes impossibles — and therefore it would be a case of higher level of micro-mapping actually producing worse usability.
3~ 8 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
I know. I'm prioritising major roads at the moment precisely because we can devote some extra routing thought to them, between crossings. It often needs a bit of on the ground checking to make sure you're choosing a natural place, however. Perhaps even people-watching for a bit to see how people do cross. ------------------ At the risk of hijacking this note, how do you feel about establishing some vague criteria for when to put a hint in? Q1: Which tags to use? Perhaps we could settle on (for the way) highway=footway footway=link (for the crossing) highway=crossing crossing=informal note=(some note about evidence) At reasonably verifiable natural place (whatever that means). That gives somewhere for Street Complete users to hang kerbstone details, anyway. Q2: How far apart should hint-crossings be? Perhaps we could say that if a stretch is over 50 metres between formal crossings, that's too much and we need to hint the router? Example where we can add something beyond what the intersecting roads give: https://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=51.748442&mlon=-1.257894#map=19/51.748442/-1.257894&layers=N (perhaps two, one near the bus stop and one to the east of the marker somewhere, if people cross there?) or to join up and de-island-ify these long traffic-islandish pseudo-pavement stepping stones between the two formal crossings at Summertown, where everybody who can seems to use those to cross, despite how busy the road gets https://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=51.748442&mlon=-1.257894#map=19/51.777822/-1.265112&layers=N (perhaps one hint at each end of the island?)
4~ 8 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
Alternative scheme 1: (crossing way) highway=footway footway=crossing crossing=informal (for the crossing) highway=crossing crossing=informal Alternative 2: Low formality. Don't bother tagging the node, and (for the crossing way) highway=footway footway=link (but with short stretches of leader sidewalk that might cause StreetComplete to ask about kerbs. Or it might not. I should test this)
5~ 8 months agocommentedgmar5
♦569
To take this area where the note is as an example: I'd say that there are informal crossings continuing straight from the pavements parallel to Croft Road, when they curve inside the cul-de-sacs. These would be an informal crossing on both way and node (Alt. 1). However, at the end of the cul-de-sacs, the pavement needs connecting to the turning circles (on the two sides, since they look Y shaped). That would be a link, not a crossing (Alt. 2).
6~ 8 months agocommentedgmar5
♦569
(Actually, there seem to be yellow lowered kerbs here, so it would be unmarked, not informal, in this case, but I hope my general point is clear.)
7~ 8 months agocommentedgmar5
♦569
This is how I'd do it: https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/168318234 Can you check that it makes sense? That said, I'd agree with your first post, that separate mapping is not worth it for most residential roads.
8~ 8 months agoclosedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
Looks about right. I've had a go at carrying through the same idea based on a little survey this evening. * There are arguably links inside the car parking blocks, but in practice they're difficult to use because the cars are in the way. * Obviously a lot has happened over the years, and some of the footpaths linking house to road have been converted into driveways. The driveways still serve as foot links, however. Anyway, that's probably it for this bit. Still too much detail for a residential area, but at least it's better detail now!

This junction has traffic islands both sides on St Aldates, and preceding the turn into Thames St from N-bound St Aldates. The road ways need splitting, particularly for the North-to-South St Aldates direction, which is really a straight-through. It's a lot of work to redo route and turn-restriction relations though, and we should at least wait till the crossings and sidewalks are complete.
2~ 8 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
There's also a split needed around a long traffic island to the North of this note, between the courts and the police station. I don't think that it warrants *continuous* dual carriageway between here and Speedwell Street, although that might look neater. Even if it it's divided most of that length, most of the division is just hatching. However it would be good to do both cuts at the same time because Relations. This area needs a revisit for the Folly Bridge footpaths (if there are any: difficult to tell from Bing, and I don't remember). I'll check the area then and get an OTG sense for it again.

New "offroad segregated track" here, between Frenchay Road and St Margaret's Road. I don't know which side. It's apparently not a good setup[1], and I'd suggest highway=footway footway=sidewalk bicycle=yes rather than highway=cycleway+cycleway=sidewalk because of that. There's a distinction to be made. We probably should be reserving h=c for genuinely better bits of cycle infrastructure, meaning routes free of obstructions and utility poles, and separated crossings with the "elephants' footprint" markings[2] that join up better stuff. Not just bits of paint on an existing footway=sidewalk that was built as a h=f. [1] https://www.cyclox.org/index.php/2025/05/28/two-cheers-for-the-woodstock-road-improvements/ "The bad" [2] https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Crossings_in_the_United_Kingdom

Implemented as highway=cycleway cycleway=sidewalk segregated=yes for now, to match the other stuff down woodstock road. I've reviewed widths and access tags, and removed nonstandard and obsolete cycleway=* tags on the roads down the entire length. I've tried to deviate and reduce width where the giant trees and awkward poles are, but it's hard to get all of them. We don't really have any guidelines for how to make a judgement call between cycleway and footway, but the first thing to go is make sure everything has reasonable geometry. Hopefully this is a good first step.

A number of "School Streets" have been introduced in Oxford — one of them here — with traffic restrictions during two time periods, in the morning and afternoon, except residents and some other categories. For more info: https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/residents/roads-and-transport/school-streets I think the restrictions can be represented with: motor_vehicle:conditional=permit @ (08:00-09:00; 14:30-15:30) Times vary depending on zones. We also need to identify the exact extent of the zones. Street names are listed on the website above (the whole street, or are signs in specific points?). Technically, restrictions only apply to inbound traffic. If we wanted to be pedantic, maybe it could be represented with motor_vehicle:forward:conditional=* or motor_vehicle:backward:conditional=* on the specific access points, but perhaps the simpler solution to the whole road is better.
2~ 10 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
Even residents need to apply for a permit, so motor_vehicle:conditional=permit@(...) seems like the right tag. Let's do it that way. I suggest marking the positions roughly - perhaps just the school - from the council list in Notes, tagging them all with #OxonSchoolStreets2025 and a link to https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/4671909 for "the decision". The hashtag means they'll show up on Anton's notes viewer (https://antonkhorev.github.io/osm-note-viewer), and the link will help explain the work we have to do. Let me know if you'd like me to do the pin drops, or I can this evening. The information there is copyrighted, owned by Oxfordshire County Council: https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/council/about-website/terms-and-conditions. On the same page, they deny any responsibility loss resulting for its misuse, so yeah. Anyway, we can't use it directly, because that would be Stealing (which would be Bad.) We can drop Note pins and suggest confirmatory visits, though, I think that's a valid way of working with public domain knowledge. Big question: what's actually on the ground for these things? If people are liable to fines for crowding school entrances with cars, you'd expect a sign, at least. Maybe I'll use this one as a test of whether we can actually do anything for these zones, if I finish Osney Mead this weekend. If there is nothing on the ground, we could ask the council produce a waiver of the tabular data on the webpage, for the sake of public mapping. The restriction info should somehow have a link back to the council website too. I'd suggest a boundary relation like https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/17748798 for each one, as a place to hang a link back to the official source, plus restrictions on the roads inside the zones.
5~ 10 months agocommentedgmar5
♦569
Yes, on the ground there definitely are very clear signs for the restriction. This one is the one I know for sure. A link to the council website, for more information, is what I meant. If not source, what would be an appropriate tag for that? The relation seems overkill, and maybe not even that appropriate since it isn't a full-fledged limited traffic zone.
6~ 10 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
I'm OK with not adding the complexity of a boundary relation, for now. We could adopt url:restrictions and description:restrictions from the wiki for the additional details. How to represent that they're only active on weekdays, during term time?

This should do it: motor_vehicle:conditional=permit @ (Mo-Fr 08:00-09:00, 14:30-15:30; SH off) For the additional information, those look like proposals with no use. I think suffixes on the related key might be more in line with other common uses: motor_vehicle:description=* motor_vehicle:url=*

♦811
Whoops, added. Feel free to adjust the descriptions if it makes more sense that way, and I'll do other ones the same way when I get around to it. From what I saw last night, the best approach is a site visit informed by the council list. Sometimes the boundaries need clarification, sometimes roads have just been omitted on the ground (Baltic Wharf, as a case in point). So, we've clarified what to do, trialled the approach. The other markers say where the work needs doing, and link back here for the why. I think that's enough to close this Note, and let the other ones be worked on separately when mappers have the time. Thanks!

These roads (and Baltic Wharf too) are now designated as School Street(s), according to the County Council website. In other words, there are now additional restrictions around school opening and closing times, which should be signposted on the roads already. Need to find the road extents, then tag the relevant bits of road with the tags we decide on. See the main discussion thread at https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/4671909 #OxonSchoolStreets2025

See the note on the other lifts to see where we should be going and why. While we're planning this, it'd be very nice to have a photo of the lift numbering for this set, and at any rooftop- and underground-bound escalators just to make sure that the entire complex is using a single consistent scheme, given that there are two valid ground floors. Anyone able to grab one of this lift? Bonus marks for the escalator heads heading to the roof.

Sainsbury's is definitely at level=1 in its building part, matching the lower complex, where it's on "UG". The white line of bricks is helpfully about at the ground level of the store, and it's accessed up stairs or a ramp 2nd and 3rd pics are round the other side, down on Greyfriars St. The loading bay parking entrance (maxheight 5) is at level 0 on its building part, "G" in the complex's notation Between the two places is a mezzanine(?ish) floor with a fire exit. Just thinking this through: this is only one of two lifts, and it needs to be checked against other signage, all escalators, and the lifts near TK Maxx first before we change anything. This one suggests a scheme like: level=2 level:ref=RT (maybe) level=1 level:ref=UG level=0 level:ref=LG level=-1 level=-2 I'm suggesting we migrate current level names to https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:level:ref and make level=* all numeric.
3~ 10 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
doh. level:ref=UG above should read G of course. otherwise, the refs on the 2 notes are the same, and I've just checked they're consistent with each other, for the avoidance of all doubt
4~ 10 months agocommentedgmar5
♦569
Yes, we should move those labels to level:ref. However, level=0 is level:ref=G in the southern half, but level:ref=UG in the northern half. That reflects reality based on external ground level, but introduces inconsistency within the shopping centre.
5~ 10 months agocommentedgmar5
♦569
The image in the top-left here https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:level seems to suggest that numbering should reflect the outside ground level, not the internal floors.
6~ 10 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
I must gather a few more photos as evidence before I start fiddling, particularly if the northern half (just North Avenue, I guess?) actually uses a different scheme, like you say! Argh.
7~ 10 months agocommentedgmar5
♦569
The scheme used internally is the same everywhere, and we can tag it straightforwardly in level:ref (most nodes already have that info in 'level', we just need to move it). What will be different is the corresponding OSM numeric 'level', i.e. there is no definite identity between a level and a level:ref. The upper ground floor level:ref=UG will be a level=0 in North Arcade, approaching from Bonn Square, but further south G will be 0 and UG is 1. (The Sainsbury's is in limbo, I guess.)
8~ 10 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
level:ref=UG can't really be level=0 for the North Arcade building: the presence of the emergency exits at the lowest usable ground level, not to mention Globe News, "pin" it to the exact same level:ref=* and level=* scheme and mapping as the rest of the complex (unexpected, but verifiable) Sainsbury's is clear-ish once you follow the line of whitewashed brickwork around the building, along Roger Bacon Lane down to Greyfriars Place. As a separate building, its lowest usable entrance is its loading dock down in Greyfriar's Place (shared with Superdry). That's also the lowest proper exposed wall, since level=0 doesn't really require a door. Pics: https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/4738767 I think it's fairly straightforward, and consistent too, now that I've done the legwork ;) I'm perfectly happy to call the Bonn Square entrance and the shops on North Arcade {layer=1, layer:ref=UG} Ref: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:level#Values
9~ 10 months agocommentedgmar5
♦569
The Bonn Square entrance (which is also used the most) absolutely is level=0, since it is levelled with the street and the ground. It cannot be level=1. See this figure: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:MarekUserDefinedBuildingLevels.jpg It doesn't matter if elsewhere there are lower levels. Bonn Square into North Arcade is equivalent to the part on the left of the figure. The map you posted here is helpful, in my opinion. https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/4738820 Where LG exists, LG=0, G=1. Where LG doesn't exit (most of North Arcade), G=0
10~ 10 months agocommentedgmar5
♦569
(The Sainsbury's makes sense, since you go up at least half a level for the entrance).
11~ 10 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
The Bonn Square entrance absolutely is level=1 because the lowest *wall of any floor above ground* of the Northernmost building of the Westgate, the "North Arcade" one, is *way* below Bonn Square. The shops inside the entrance cannot be anything other than level=1 because you have to go up steps or the long and sloping Castle Street or St Ebbes to get up to them. Please look at the diagram on https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:level#Values again. This one: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Building-levels.png. For now, I have resolved this in the standard way. I draw your attention to the wording "an entrance=* located on the right of C will be tagged with level=1" That said, there's no reason why a threshold pedestrian area cannot be level=0 at one end to match the street and level=1 at the other to match the building. I'm specifically referring to https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1318381951, which I consider transitional between the outer street-based numbering, and the inner, building-based numbering. If you were to flip it so that North Arcade (the building) had its layer=0 at Bonn Square (wrong according to the docs), you'd be breaking all the escalators between UG and G around Church Lane. A down escalator tagged level=0;0 + level:ref=UG;G just feels like a worse compromise to me!
12~ 10 months agoclosedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
Anyway, I've fixed this to my own satisfaction. I'll leave https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/4738820 open for a bit though to see if we can come up with a consensus about the Bonn Square transition and level for outer-edge doors, or North Arcade as a whole. (I've also added the highway=pedestrian ways on UG for routing lying south of Middle Square. They should be connected with escalators now, but not lifts or stairs yet - I don't think the South Arcade UG-G stairs are even mapped yet.)

Barton Fields Road may be better as highway=tertiary, since it's more than just residential now it's connected to things: - bus routes - connects school to residential streets - connects A40 to Barton - mostly quite wide, with parking done in bays This would have knock-on effects, since it logically forces several roads to the East to be tertiary and not residential too, mostly for 1-way bus loop reasons. Is that sufficient? - Fettiplace Road (bus loop) - Underhill Circus (bus loop, shops) - Stowford Road (bus loop) - Burchester Avenue (bus loop) - North Way (bus loop) - the linking bit of Barton Village Road (bus loop) Apart from Burchester Avenue, they are all fairly narrow and cluttered for a tertiary road, with lots of poorly jammed in on-street parking. The bus companies only run buses one way on the Barton roads as a consequence. Waynflete Road, on the other side, is more obviously tertiary. It's just another part of the bus route loop, but it also links to the schools and leisure centre on that side.

♦811
First step: the obvious tertiary roads (for all that they have housing next to them too): https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/165073138 Here I'm prioritizing the intentional distributor road, and the set of older roads that connects it through the focal area of Barton and out the other side. They're all busy roads with 2 or more bus routes, even if Fettiplace Road is also a nightmare for them due to the parked cars and lack of sensible passing places.

♦811
Done. Perhaps Waynflete Road, Barton Village Road, and North Way (within Barton) are debatable, but I think the others are good as tertiary. I think the main bus routes through Northway, and the wider bus links through

Need to survey, and review the statuses of the bike infrastructure (such as it is) around this crossroad and out onto the E, N, and S spurs. There are a couple of sidewalk to road links that need adding at their correct position, and the footways might be better represented as cycleways if all the crossings are toucans and there's a bit of signposting going on. #surveyme
2~ 11 months agocommentedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
Surveyed. The elephant's feet cycleway markings should perhaps be done as cycleway=crossing, so I'll keep this open
3~ 11 months agoclosedAndrew Chadwick
♦811
On second thoughts, it only makes sense to do the "elephants' footprints" cycle lanes as separate OSM ways tagged as crossings if they continue as separate OSM cycleways done as separate OSM geometries at both ends. Right now, only the Access to Headington stuff at the Cherwell Drive/Marsh Lane junction does that.
