(I'm systematically going through addresses which have both addr:place and addr:street which is always wrong) For addr:city, the guide I am using says that should always be the post town - which I think in this case is Linlithgow?

♦7,285		Yeah I saw that guide and have seen talk-gb/forum comments a while ago, wasn't really sure about it but didn't get round to making any objections! For example there's only 13 post towns in Fife and 113 towns/villages, would be a bit strange for all Dalgety Bay addresses to have their addr:city as Dunfermline - and then what would be the addr tag for Dalgety Bay? Maybe I'm wrong but I've just used addr:city for a distinct town/village, because I guess if someone wanted to come along later to add the post town they could do so while retaining the town/village info.

♦86		I've been to this spot albeit a year ago. There are no cliffs here - a steep grass incline, but more an embankment - not a vertical drop. From what I recall there's a fence and a gate too. I'd probably consider whether there should be a path here, as it was pretty faint and disappears briefly where there's been erosion into the river. But for the time being I'm just fixing the fact it doesn't "go down a cliff"

I thought, surface=paved is not specific enough and is discouraged by the wiki, surface=flexipave feels like the correct value (unless there's an existing synonym I'm not aware of). I'm kind of on the fence, slightly favour surface=flexipave, but if you or anyone feels strongly I'm happy for it to be changed.

♦1		Hi, RW stands for Rother Wanderführer and usually the number of the hike in the book. Rother is a very popular Hiking guide in German language, and most of the trails are marked as relations. You could also buy the Book and have access to the GPX trails on the website. I prefer to generate relations which are displayed in waymarkedtrails.org and can be downloaded to the satnav. There is a controversy about if trails are (to be) marked in Scotland. In Switzerland they are marked, we consider this a security feature. In Scotland, often only the start point is marked even on popular trails, some people say, there should be no waymarks, but you should use map and compass. As I contribute to Wikivoyage project, I rather provide a link to a relations with the correct trail instead of letting people to get lost in the fog and rain... Regards from Switzerland Martin

♦1,178		I see, thanks. There are waymarked hiking trails all over Scotland, where markers tell people where to go. An example is the West Highland Way. We tend to keep route=hiking relations for these cases. That's not usually the case on the hills. There may be a sign by the car park that tells hikers where the path starts, but there isn't usually waymarking on the path itself, or guideposts in the mountains like in the Alps. It could be confusing to have route relations in OSM for route suggestions that aren't actually waymarked on the ground. I understand that you want to show a route in WikiVoyage but isn't there another way, that doesn't involve creating an OSM relation? And aren't there also copyright issues with uploading route suggestions from Rother into OSM?

♦1		Yes I know long distance trails, but many people like hiking Munros and Hillwalking, and it's a security reason to indicate the most common trail. We try to support sustainable tourism an encouraging people to travel and doing something and not just lying at the beach an drinking. For me it's difficult to understand why there is so little support to hikers in Scotland with putting some waymarks, ant its better to have a GPX trail on the Satnav or Smartphone then getting lost in the fog and rain. In Wikivoyage, the software supports only JSON which cannot be loaded to any Satnav I know without converting it. And I do not want to point people to expensive for pay websites, just to find there a track to download, or to use Google, there they usually have only the starting point, and quite often its incorrect. I bought a whole pile of hiking books in UK, but not everybody has the time and money to order the books in advance for tour planning at home, and that's a security thing you should do, and not arrive, buy a book and start to hike. I think geographic informations are only data which are not copyright protected as points on a GPX track. The trails are just there and hiked, and the Rother book describes the existing trails, they did not invent these trails. But I would not encourage to share their GPX files (which you are allowed to download if you own the book) but to create the GPX files myself, I'm not paid and I'm not expecting anything for my work. But I consider it a problem, to take data which is publically available and expect someone to pay for it, that's not the idea of open data. I hope you understand, regards Martin

I just find it a bit confusing to have the routes in OSM as a route=hiking relation, because normally that would mean that a trail is marked on the ground with a symbol, there’s an organisation responsible for maintaining it, etc. and that's how the tag is documented. Do you know Walkhighlands? It’s not open data, but free and you can download GPX tracks for all the Munros. You could point Wikivoyage readers there (e.g. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lochlomond/the-cobbler.shtml) The route descriptions there are very high quality, step by step with photos, and there are also walk reports from other users. There are also other websites where you can upload and create your own tracks and others can download them, have you had a look at Wikiloc? I'm no copyright expert, but usually OSM is very careful with this sort of thing, more careful maybe than other websites like Wikiloc

I know Walkhighlands (great, but not a part of the "wikiverse", so if the people running it, decide to close down, it's gone), Wikiloc (great, some tracks are private expeditions and not possible to reproduce, they have a "to pay for" premium membership), Outdooractive (was fine, but now full acess only for paying members) - so I know them, but maybe not the average user on OSM projects. I checked the documentation which is different in german and english language, now I know what you are referring to (exists only in english variant): "Routes that are suitable for inclusion in OSM should usually match one or more of the following guidelines: - The route is signed or otherwise identifiable on the ground.... You don't find this in the German version of the same page ;-( But there are other criteria mentionned: " - The route is established, documented and/or maintained by an organization that is well known or officially responsible for this function (e.g. mountaineering clubs, tourism boards, ...). - The route itself is shared common knowledge among a significant number of people...." So I think, the standard access routes to Munroes and well known hills should warrant a OSM route. Even more if there is a signpost or map at the start, nothing is said about in which distances you must find waymarkers on the ground, and even for well known long distance trails, there are partly ruined or inexisting "on the ground", so the E4 in Cyprus, but that should not be deleted from OSM only because of the markers are rusty or destroyed. Many trails in Italy or Cyprus even in well known Nature Reserves are only documented as Gogle Maps satellite images with a wide red line, this can be done better, even better if you have been there searching the trail... But maybe we should delete the RW number, as they only relate to this hiking guide which is very popular in the german speaking countries, but is no official numbering and in fact is not marked locally.

To redistribute the GPX tracks threatens their business model. I'm worried that this will get OSM into trouble. They run on donations and advertising and don't depend on charging users money for the tracks. If they say yes, then we can put them somewhere permanent, maybe the Internet Archive, and you can link to there from Wikivoyage?

I have downloaded the files, because I own some of the books, but the GPX files themselves are not and have never been exported to OSM, quite often they are quite inaccurate, some meters away, and with some tours you get really in troubles. But you can find the trails they recommend (usually some connected together, or they suggest routes without any existing trails) when looking at OSM or OS maps (yes I paid to access them, too), so the paths themselves are no way copyright protected. But at least I think we should remove all RWxx numbers from OSM, as they are really private and marked not on the spot. It would be great if you could convince the Walkhighlands founders to allow access to their GPX trails or simply their hiking trail proposals to OSM. I'm happy to study their proposals and create OSM relations for the access routes to some popular Munros and other hills and mention walkhighlands as a source in OSM. And even more to link from Wikivoyage to somewhere with a open license access, or maybe even their website, if the tracks will remain available for some time. You see the examples in Wikipedia, where many of the webresources in citations have disappeared for years. The bigger task is to create Pages for the places in WV and compile the information, in the german language section, we adress people who are not that well english speaking. Even for me the british hiking books are sometimes challenging because some words are not commonly used in English taught at school in our country. So Travellers might get stuck when reading "follow the corrie and climb over the stile...", but thats similar in Italy and Greece, all have their own expression for trail elemants and landmarks... regards Martin

As the paths are already mapped I'm not sure how much copyright another website has over an OSM relation connecting them on what is basically the only route from the main road to The Cobbler? These relations could be useful I suppose, as in some places you have a sign (e.g. ScotWays) at the bottom of a hill with a destination or hill name on it. Although where do you draw the line regards mapping routes which are unsigned on the ground?

♦1		That's what I propose to do: the relation can be created usually already existing and mapped trails, but they are displayed and can be easily downloaded at waymarkedtrails.org and similar open data sites and i want to create relations for the standard routes to some popular hills, because from the map alone, sometimes it's difficult to guess, what i a well trodden standard route on a peak, and what is a "goat trail" not to be recommended. Sometimes we have these problems in the Alps where trails are mapped in OSM and not in the national topographic maps as they seem okay in the beginning and and in a dangerous rockky are or need climbing. ♦1,178		Sometimes it's arbitrary though: You have places like Ben Lomond where your route relation goes up the main tourist path and then down the Ptarmigan ridge, but that is no more or less correct than going down the same way you came up (which as far as I know is what most people do), and there are certainly no signposts on the mountain telling people that to complete the "Ben Lomond Trail", they need to go down the Ptarmigan Ridge. https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/16124656 I think what we are missing is an open data equivalent of Alltrails, where you can just upload any trail you want. Re "goat trails": you can improve the map a lot by adding sac_scale and trail_visibility (for paths that you are familiar with). This is probably more valuable than adding route relations because it gets shown in a lot of hiking apps. But it relies on someone walking the "goat trail" and then adding those tags based on their experience.
