Has it occurred to you that the address on Juniper Drive might be named after this part of the River Thames? The name will have been in use for centuries, along with Chelsea Reach, Nine Elms Reach, Lambeth Reach, etc. It's shown on an out-of-copyright OS 25 inch map from 1892-1914 here: https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=17.1&lat=51.47332&lon=-0.17957&layers=168&right=osm

Should this road be marked as "access all: no", with yes for "foot" and "bike"?
22026-01-14 08:53commentedrskedgell
♦2,441
The current access tagging looks like a reasonable interpretation of The Hammersmith and Fulham (South Fulham Low Traffic Neighbourhood) (Eastern Side) (Prescribed Routes) Order 2022 ( https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/3968030 ). The access tags used are motor_vehicle=permit + bus=yes + taxi=yes Using access=no is usually wrong unless a road is actually subject to a long-term closure. Traffic restrictions usually apply to vehicle=* or motor_vehicle=* with only the signed exceptions needed. https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1007426592

Your photo clearly shows that the number 29 wheelie bin is in Dutton Street but less obviously there is also a Dutton Street sign on the corner where number 21 is mapped. And in fact, number 21 is already mapped as Dutton Street. I've remapped the entire stretch accordingly. But there's a remaining question: what is https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1466481244/ ? I suspect it's also not Maidenstone Hill because it no longer joins to https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1466481244/
32026-01-13 12:34commentedrskedgell
♦2,441
According to both OS Open USRN and OS Open Roads, the road name is Maidenstone Hill from Blackheath Hill to 31/33 Dutton Street, then continues to the junction with Point Hill. There's also a spur connecting to Dutton Street further up ( https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/10403268 ). This appears to be one of those anomalies where house numbering and street naming conflict. I think that https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1466481490 could be tagged with: name=Maidenstone Hill name:right=Dutton Street Several existing streets have been renamed, which may explain some of the confusion. https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=19.4&lat=51.47335&lon=-0.01296&layers=168&right=osm https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=19.4&lat=51.47335&lon=-0.01296&layers=173&right=osm
42026-01-13 13:51commentedharg
♦3,494
To be certain, it would help to have all the currently untagged housenumbers for both streets, which would probably show a discontinuity where the exact joins are.

There are two buildings both mapped as 1-31 Portia Way. Is this correct? https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/227869643 https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/227869652
22026-01-08 16:26commentedharg
♦3,494
All other buildings to the east of Portia Way are even numbered, so the error must be way 227869652 which should probably be 2-10 even. But I'm also puzzled that node/3923656646 claims entrance to 49-63. a) There must be an unmapped entrance(s) to 1-15. b) mapping housenumbers to entrances is good and should be done more often, but then way 227869643 should not duplicate the housenumbers claimed by its entrance. c) is this the sole entrance to 49-63?

removed destination tagging, but leaving this open as other tagging such as width restrictions should probably be added
42026-01-06 19:04commentedrskedgell
♦2,441
At the roundabout end of School Road there's a traffic_sign=GB:629 6'6" width restriction sign with a plate which I think says "except for access". That would suggest maxwidth=6'6" maxwidth:conditional=none @ destination https://www.mapillary.com/app/?pKey=1758926125018175

Thanks, I've updated the speed here now. I've assumed that it also applies to Towner Close and Littledale that are accessed from Poppyfields, but I'm unclear whether it applies to Ruglys Way, given that it can also be accessed from Tatchell Drive. I can't see a clear enough image of the entrance to Tatchell Drive in the Mapillary imagery to see whether there's a 10 mph sign there too. So I'll leave this open to check that.

♦2,441
I'd be inclined to add hazard=pedestrians (explicitly signed) and ownership=private (a public highway won't have a permanent 10mph speed limit). It may also be access=destination but I can't read all of the text on the street name sign.
52026-01-09 18:00commentedGregory Williams
♦1,263

Step, impractical for bikes #OsmAnd
22025-10-26 14:23commentedrskedgell
♦2,441
If there's no signage to indicate that cycling is explicitly permitted (and I don't think there is), bicycle permeability isn't really an issue here. Does it present a barrier to wheelchair accessibility?
32025-10-26 16:08commentedmgrant
♦2
From memory, my issue wasn't that cycles weren't permitted, my issue was that it was impractical for bikes because in that tight space there was a bend and some steps. I think I had to pick my bike up for a few feet. There might have been a handrail (don't remember). My issue is really about routing in that it's probably best not to route bikes through this tight alley with the steps. It's not like there isn't a much better way around the other way. Feel free to delete this note if you think this issue is too minor. For me, it was just one of those "oh jeez, bikes shouldn't be routed down this" moments of frustration.
42025-10-26 16:45commentedrskedgell
♦2,441
The note is useful because it identifies a problem. In this case, we have a path which has only been tagged as highway=footway since it was added to the map in 2008. It's never had any bicycle=* tags, so cycle routing software shouldn't be trying to use it in the first place. I appreciate that this was 3 months ago, but can you remember which routing software and profile you were using? In the mean time, it wouldn't hurt to add bicycle=no to the way. It's technically redundant and might not fix the underlying problem. https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/28982999/history
52025-10-26 16:47commentedrskedgell
♦2,441
PS I'll try to go there tomorrow and add the step(s), which might also discourage bicycle routing.
62025-10-26 22:12commentedmgrant
♦2
Great. I hope I am not misremembering the step! Let me know what you find. I was using OsmAnd on my phone. I did some searching and it appears to have its own custom routing engine.
72025-10-27 07:39commentedharg
♦3,494
Mapping the steps (including the number of steps) and any other barrier is the correct solution. The router can then decide whether there is a better route. But even without the step mapped, the router is probably at fault if it is using a footway without instructing the cyclist to dismount for its entire length. If there's no better route, that would sometimes be a better alternative than a long detour, but the router should not be encouraging breaking the law if there is nothing to indicate that bicycles are legally permited. We don't have a bicycle=inconvenient tag and bicyle=no implies a specific legal prohibition according to https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Bicycle. So that would technically only be correct if there is signage or other evidence of the legal prohibition.
82025-11-01 12:13commentedrskedgell
♦2,441
No steps on this section, just flat asphalt. No signs prohibiting or allowing cycling, so best left tagged as highway=footway without access tags. Attached photo(s): https://streetcomplete.app/p/314016.jpg

While there's a dropped kerb/curb there is also a gate that requires swinging; i'm not quite sure why you were incensed to write this as an editor has written it's a footpath for the final section purely and fairly obviously to discourage people thinking it was incredibly easy but everyone would appreciate your precision - I'll avoid their shorthand and fix as you say1

I'm not quite sure why you think I was "incensed", you seem to be reading rather a lot into a note asking any OSM user for confirmation of the situation on the ground. A cycle route which is effectively a dead for cyclists looks odd, but these things do happen due to poor planning and design by local authorities. It's worth noting that the route relation which I was enquiring about was deleted 3 years ago. You've never edited it.https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/9708949/history

If the way is defunct this site no longer maps brief history or historic uses either, sadly. Grateful if you can avoid the big red x over the area staining its excellent mapping more generally and close your comment. I detailed more on the gate from actual inspection. I’ve said the curb is gone and you ignored me as you seized upon one word i used as emotive whereas i was just suggesting it’s no deal. It was no big deal as the way has gone it turns out.

You appear to have fundamentally misunderstood the purpose of notes in OSM. As for the area having excellent mapping generally, you may not be aware of the fiction, bad mapping and blatant copying from Google another mapper (thankfully now self-deleted) which had to be cleaned up by other mappers.

Can I assume that you have misinterpreted the "big red x", which is the way the openstreetmap.org site represents an unresolved note, as if someone had somehow marked your work as incorrect? They're completely unrelated. This would still be the case even if you'd ever edited any of the objects in question before I added the note. Perhaps it would also help if you read this? https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Notes

Possibly not, as that would imply a legal right of way. It's harder to find out in inner London, but as it doesn't have a USRN there probably isn't any evidence that it's a public highway or a PRoW. It might be foot=permissive, if the owner of the building through which it passes could choose to gate it.

Thames Path temporarily(?) fenced off here via StreetComplete 52.1 Attached photo(s): https://westnordost.de/p/147040.jpg
22023-05-07 21:03commentedbedenskiThis has been fenced off for at least a year, if not two. Look at street view on google maps, then go back through the history. You'll see its been fenced off for some time. Given that, I'm certain this is a ruse by the building management to keep pedestrians off the thames path
32023-05-09 18:45commentedrskedgell
♦2,441
I've added the fence and set part of the path to disused:* in https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/135908282 I've also sent an email to LB Tower Hamlets street works team about the closure, which may help if it's covered by them. Otherwise, it's unlikely to be a PRoW, but there may be a planning condition about access.
42023-05-09 22:12commentedbedenskiI guess the concern there is then there is no expectation that the path can/should be used? A non profit that tackles these issues is https://reclaimourriver.com/about-us/ but I don't think they've picked up on this section yet.

According to https://www.reddit.com/r/londoncycling/comments/84bj8g/why_nobody_cycles_through_the_rotherhithe_tunnel/ it's not good for cycling but not actually illegal. I note it's currently tagged foot=discouraged and will try adding the same for bicycle, but its not an official tag and I can't promise routers will understand it.

It's been set more recently to bicycle=permissive, which is clearly wrong. It's not a revocable permission, but a right which would require a traffic order to extinguish. I'm not a huge fan of using discouraged when there's no sign, but I think it's probably the best option currently available.

I'm sure bike routers already take into account if a route is on/next to a busy road. Plus I'd imagine the air isn't as bad during quieter hours. If there was a clear hazard, that could've been mapped. Closing this

22024-07-25 12:50commentedJayTurnr

On Bing Streetside, it indicates this is resticted by a No Entry sign (red circle, one line). The gov website states this actually means "No entry for vehicular traffic" - so I want to side on vehicle=no instead https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/know-your-traffic-signs/regulatory-signs
32025-08-05 11:54commentedrskedgell

Definitely vehicle=no + bus=yes + bicycle=yes. Historically, access=no was misused because OSM Carto didn't render restricted access on roads when the tag was motor_vehicle=* or vehicle=*. That has now changed.

The way it is currently mapped appeals to my sense of logic, since it means we can follow the full length of Fetter Lane strictly sticking to ways named "Fetter Lane" (as it diverts onto that smaller side-road to the north) But then again it wouldn't be at all shocking to find naming that is _not_ pleasingly logical! Visited 14 August 2025. There are three signs in this area. The first at the intersection with Bollingbroke way advises that there is no access to Stockley Business Park here for cars and motorbikes and gives directions to where access can be achieved. The larger sign near to the barriers state that the road entrance is for buses only and there is strictly no public vehicular access. The smaller sign states that there is no motorcycle access and that bicyclists should dismount and use the footpath.

It's an ornamental canal following the former edge of the dock. Usually it doesn't flow, but if enough water entered from Canada Water, it would carry it away to the North, into Surrey Water and ultimately the Thames.

Firstly, I think the waterflow direction is incorrect per your reply and the now closed https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/4339350 Will have to think about how to map the overflow at the dam damming Surrey Water in order to avoid any future confusion about how the water flows here https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/141394271

Can you give more details? From where are they routed down Ridgway Road? In the database Ridgeway Road is open to access for all motor vehicles from Poplar's Farm Rd northwards for around 500m, to where it ends and gives onto a footpath. I've tried a few routes that might make use of Ridgeway Rd and all avoid it due to the footpath. Sometimes routing engines misinterpret tags on roads - do you know which apps or satnavs are throwing up this issue? If you can give more details of the error, someone can try to repeat it and fix it.

I'm puzzled, because the misplaced node https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/307642733/history#map=17/51.35791/-0.26294&layers=N says it has not been edited for 15 years even though it's part of https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/150392876#map=4/28.18/14.63 that was edited 17 days ago. I see rskedghill has made a comment on that changeset and have messaged him to see if this can be undone.

I've had a stab at restoring it. When @CharlieH22 dragged the end of the bridge onto the running track, merging the node deleted the newer node, n378212139. Luckily, the running track was mapped before the bridge, so I've undeleted this node. The path from the bridge was also glued to the London LOOP path, with @CharlieH22 creating n11841258383. I have deleted this node. There is probably a better way to do this using archived extracts from planet.osm or using Overpass Turbo's attic data, but hopefully I've fixed it in https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/151139452 When I get a chance, I'll do a run along that section of the London LOOP and check it my GNSS trace against the map. I'm injured, so this may be a few weeks.

I think that the bridge that was restored was https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/245590371 but now it has been restored you can no longer tell from my note. I guess by the time rskedgell had recovered from injury, we had all forgotten. If checking this bridge is easy for you, please do, otherwise I think we can just resolve this.

@DaveF The section SE of the High Street/Railway Street/Victoria Street junction has the same Designated Street Name record in OS Open USRN as the rest of Balmoral Road, so I have updated it accordingly.
