distannce of barrier, wide of the road, etc... Keep in mind that some of us , worked for year in the past including field survey. I think, we know better than you. Not every time , details are better and smarter choice . Let's not make coimpelx things where it does not worth it, and don't give a real fucntionality. It's a simple junction, not an important one. The complexity would not increase because including that missing lane would make the longer continuation of the two motorway_links on the outside unnecessary. And also, why is complexity relevant? It should just be truth and following the wiki. It's just not a good idea for everyone to map in whatever way they like. OSM should be consistent and the wiki helps with that. I don't deny your competence. I'm not saying anything about you personally. It's just data consistency and following the wiki.

Yes, countries are allowed to differ, but Romania does not have a separate rule on this. If the wiki is not 100 % mandatory, it is also not mandatory to map it in this simplified way either.

I'm on those channels. :)) I absolutely could be wrong about anything, but I just want more than the claim that I am wrong and reasons that don't matter in the wiki and contradict the wiki. Mapping in Romania cannot depend on the possbility of a hypothetical message in a group chat 7 years ago. Can you seriously give me the timestamp of the messages when it was discussed that physical barriers should not separate the roads? On roundabouts they are separate so that can't be the rule. Or are you just referencing the channels because it's hard for me to find the specific info there? :)) In OSM it's not about authority, its about truth, reasoning, consensus and the wiki. :)

Bro, you are just going all the time with wiki. Wiki is a general rule. But every country has their detailed rules and we follow them. Never had an issue, and you are the only one, you want to not obey country rules.. Do you have any mental problems or what ? I don';t want to offend anyone, but you are a little bit stuborn.. For me it's simple to make that change... The problem is not on my side, it's on yours. We have many disscutions oin github regarding a lot of stuff in OSM, sometimes we didn't started new topics, and we talked about a lot of things in one topic. We had meetings in Bucharest and in other parts of Romania, and even he had mapping partyes, with field survey.

You cannot provide any evidence that Romania has its own rules on this specific issue. It is very unlikely that it does, because usually it is mapped separately when you have any type of barriers in the middle. A mere claim is not enough to nullify the OSM wiki. I'm happy to consider any Romania-specific forum discussion you can point me to. I can't find anything like that.
26~ 1 month agoclosedrarad74
♦746
No one here owes you an explanation. No one is obliged to provide one. Ultimately, we can simply say we edited it that way because we felt like it. Using Wikipedia isn't mandatory. Work here is based on experience and rules established either tacitly among editors or through discussions on specific forums. For the last time, mind your own business and back off; we don't have to explain ourselves to you. You probably aren't even from Romania. Rules can be applied differently in different countries. Ultimately, if you aren't happy with it, you are free to stop using this map and use a different navigation app instead.

The issue with the idea of not owing an explanation is that you can claim unsubstantiated things and make up rules and when asked to give sources, you can always excuse those sources not existing by saying that you don't owe it to provide them. I can do it right now: I can claim that I have some sources about the Romanian mapping standard being to separate when there is physical separation and that there is consensus on it. Now what? How do we decide who is right without sources? If using the wiki is not mandatory, it is also not mandatory to draw this intersection how it's currently drawn, cuts both ways. We need something to appeal to when there is disagreement. That's what the wiki is for. And the wiki agrees with me, not with you. And it's an is–ought fallacy to think that how it organically developed is how it should be, when that could have been based on people not following the wiki and just doing it with common sense. It's okay to refine later. Rules can be different by country but it's generally discouraged and more importantly, not a shred of evidence has been given that this particular rule is different at all in Romania, just ipse dixit claims.

Here are big companies like Apple, Tomtom, Facebook and Kaart which folow the same rules country by country. What are you going to do? Are you going to scold them, too? From 2009 until now, we haven't had to give embarrassing explanations to anyone—unlike now, when I’ve provided them to you out of goodwill far too many times. So... Goodbye!

Dear GabrielSebastianMoise, rarad74 - I can see how you're pissed off when someone adds hundreds of notes across the country about you "doing it wrong". That wasn't very clever of jared_25, and I think this matter should have been approached differently. On the other hand, in general mappers *do* own each other explanations - or if you can't explain why something should be done in a certain way you can't complain if someone else than changes it. It is true that many communities in OSM have meanwhile switched over to a model where the motorway_link only starts at the point where the physical separation starts, for example near me in Germany: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/48.968052/8.427616. That doesn't mean that the Romanian community is doing it wrong, or old-fashioned, or outdated; though it might make sense to at least talk about why this change has been done elsewhere. jared_25 has opened a forum post here https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/romania-standardizing-highway-link-geometry-at-gore-points-for-improved-lane-guidance-and-routing/145788 and I would like to invite you to participate in that discussion. There isn't yet a sub forum for Romania on the site, so maybe it will be difficult to attract many Romanian mappers to the discussion but we could try - maybe you could share the link on Telegram or whereever else Romanian mappers discuss issues. It would be good if the community could find a consensus in this. I understand that jared_25 has offended quite a few people with his approach, but I think you have offended him back in this note discussion so maybe we could call it even and try to have a factual discussion.

Hi woodpeck, glad to chat with you again. We haven't talked from 24th Aprin 2014 from the "sorein" incident. We did not had any conflict from then , till now. Now, the problem is as simple it seems, the more complicated became when you dig deeper. So..... the problem now, is we are sick and tired for this bullshit like in this case. Some young or teenager, that is acting like an AI Bot, and 25, is not his day of birth, and it's from his age, to tell us how bad our work is, and how we did not followed Wiki Rules. Wiki is a reference, not an "enforced" or a "must do like this" way. So I'm a OSM Mapper from 2012, Razvan as well, Viorel who did a very good, hard and incredible work with detailed buildings in a short time, and now the very foundation of Romanian Map ( Francisc Toth, Andrei Cipu, Strainu, Alex Morega, Florin Badita, Michael Hackel, Edy Petrisor, Jean-Baptiste Holcroft, Cristian Draghici, and maybe others that I can't remember now ), is telling us that we all made a lot of things wrong. Who he think he is ? Let me be clear. That "Idiot" Rarad ( Razvan), I think is the only one that almost every day is checking the History of Romanian Edits, and is trying to keep an eye for vandalism, for bad edits made by mistake, or others who do not know how to map somethings, and is in touch with those who respond to his messages. Kaart Team was making edits in Romania, and they made very bad ones, on major roads in my area, because they were using sattelite imagery rather than field survey, and they didn't know how old they were. I spoke to them and they agreed with me. There is no MAP that overall to be more than 60% accurate, and will never be. Is very hard to mantain. Me and Rarad, we were hired by Here Maps, to work with them. Rarad also was driving the car on the Southern and Eastern part of Romania, to collect data from the field. We had Special Priviledges on the Map Editor.

Our OSM Romanian edits on the map, are almost identical with most the same kind of edits from other Countries . Now we are working closely with TomTom, that is usind different layers from OSM Data, for TomTom Android Navigation App. Everything jared pointed , is working with no issue, in more than 80% of navigation apps that are using OSM Data. Some notes were good and a lot more with "nonsense". OSMAnd is the only app , that knows and uses a lot of "wiki tagging" , that where is needed, is inserted into the map data. The rest, they don't use, and don't know the most majority of tagging, even the simple one like surface quality for different paving types. A long time ago, someone was making some edits on major roads in our Country, and make a big mess in navigation apps routing, because OSM is using to many road types and categories, than Here Maps, TomTom or Google does. Some navigation apps, are using the same routing engine, for payed and non payed maps( TomTom and OSM), like MapFactor does for an example, and there are one or two more apps that does the same thing. They way jared_25 tried to imposed here is dissrespectfull, because I'm not hired by the OSM, and I was using my car, my money, my devices, and my time to go on field survey when needed in different part of our country, and I will not let someone to pee on me, on the others, and on our hard work. There was no one till now to tell us how bad our work is , and how we don not stick by the wiki. All those years I choose to stay away from discussions, and only talked with the "Elders" and went on the mapping parties and we talked about how things shouled be made and how to correct , etc. Now I will ask DWG to chose wisely, because now I'm pissed off about how things turns here . For me and a couple more people that made a huge difference in Romania Map, to forward a legal notice to ask OSM Project to delete every work we made , and every change we've made on this map.

Because we did that as a hobby, never received nothing from anyone, and is still our work and data. And if we receive this "shit" from some like jared, we will want to show how Romanian Map will look without our data. And let's be honest... more than 80% of our travel , is made using Waze and Google, because of Live traffic, and live re-routing base on traffic support from those apps. DWG has the tools to see all our edits and work in a detailed way, and can figure it out how much work and hours we spent for OSM Project. So we can live wihout OSM. Now it's time to choose between guys like jared and his way of asking or imposing something, or those one , the heavy work and mainteiners ones of the map. If jared would have been on Here Maps mapping training classes, we ould never asked why and how to put separate lanes on a road. Like he wants, by the book. Like G-Man said in Half Life: It's time to choose ! :)) A lot more can be said, but beter to talk in private. WoodPeck, if needed I can give you my phone number on private messages to talk straight and live on whatsapp or any other platform you wish. Have a great day everyone !

I apologize for creating so many notes. In hindsight that's clearly the wrong approach because the highway links aren't like that in just one place so I should have expected opposition and tried consensus building first. So I totally apologize. It was a mistake. I just assumed everyone will instantly agree because I just posted wiki text and we can just start correcting it and that my notes would help find all the places where it's like that. Sorry. I also didn't think of my notes as representing disagreement with very experienced mappers like you GabrielSebastianMoise. I just thought of them as pointing out an inaccuracy to everyone who might want to fix it. So sorry if it came across like that. I totally acknowledge your experience, your expertise, your involvement and competence. I am just a random guy, yeah, I have no right to think I know better and no right to piss off people who contribute to such a major extent as you by creating so many identical notes. I hope we can forget about me. So I really really hope you'll continue mapping. Sorry man! GabrielSebastianMoise, what do you think about all the usual arguments for separation at gore point? - OSM and navigation apps knowing about and expecting lane information and lane change restrictions - An OSM highway representing the entire highway and not single lanes (except when barriers) - Gore point separation representing the sort of broad physics of the physical separation instead of lane markings - The OSM wiki in some sense already being mostly a result of consensus - That OSM mostly should be internationally similar so that developers don't need to tailor things to each country (things like voice navigation saying you need to exit right now when the last chance would be later) - Repeated consensus: https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/poll-road-and-link-geometry-when-turn-lanes-continue-into-links/142131 I want agreement with you.

Closing the duplicates, but reactivating this one, citing the anonymous : "why is that a personal anonymous note. not personal at all, factual. ". It was posted by a friend of mine who has no account and asked me to look into this why all his notes were closed with dubious reasining. He told me - and wrote it in other notes - that everything he noted is clearly visible from the road and the aerial pictures are outdated, which is no wonder given how fast Starbase develops.

Now that we have someone we can direct questions to, this is better. Anonymous notes that will never (because they can't) respond to ambiguous notes we generally close lest the map gets full of these notes that we can't take action on.
8~ 4 months agocommentedgpserror
♦11,992
btw personal note = note that only the person who wrote it has value in the note. If one makes a note that nobody else could possibly understand, this is a personal note. Notes need to be written in such a way that there is some way that an action can derived from it that will improve the map. notes like "building site" we get a lot of - and tends to be real estate "professionals" making a pin for their customers to look at - and this usage is forbidden as it'd clog up the note system, and especially for anonymous notes. Understand now?
9~ 4 months agocommentedgpserror
♦11,992
I would suggest your friend to make an account. accounts are free, and heck if they are first hand survey, they are welcome to edit the map themselves with an account, and other people don't have to guess what these notes mean.

Thank you all for commenting. First, I am a German OSM mapper not really interested in working in the US region. As stated above, I was asked by a friend who was irritated that his on-the-ground observation notes were closed several times for no good reason, at least for him. I now understand where the misunderstanding came from. About "personal notes": I agree notes should be useful for all, not a single user. In Germany, there is a power user who spams a whole region with his personal notes, using even a bot to close and re-activate them - and despite opposition from other users, he is protected by a member of the Data Working Group... Glad to hear that in your region the rules are more strict. I was not aware that real estate people would misuse notes for advertising, and understand the problem. That clearly is a US problem... But in this case, it really is an active building site. I asked my friend for more info. He told me that, as Starbase is developing that quickly, it would make no sense to mark every building site as such, but to leave the note marker open as a reminder to check again a few weeks or months later if there is newer images, and then add the building - like Fesca suggested. In the last Youtube RGV flyover I could spot all the disputed areas, this, the school and others, as active building sites and confirming the on-the-ground observations. If spotting something in a recent YT video is not considered adequate enough, just wait. And last: I do not think my friend will ever contribute to OSM; he was just visiting the region as a space fan, and wanted to disclose a few new things he spotted. After this experience, I think he will refrain to continue. For myself, I usually only work locally and on-the-ground, but will be glad to discuss further and/or help here.

It's too bad. I really encourage anyone who wants to see a change on the map to create an account versus making an anonymous note. I mean, I suspect your friend also created https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/5248300 which was clear enough for me to go ahead and add exactly as said. This is a "good" note that anyone can verify. But notes that are ambiguous and need clarification...and an anonymous note can't be clarified... will get closed. No hard feelings I hope, but it's the way to clear the notes we can't act upon so we don't get confused as more and more notes get added for attention. I wouldn't say this is a regional rule or anything either, just a personal pet peeve that a bunch of other mappers adopted. I think with this adoption I've noticed the number of open notes in the USA have dropped significantly -- when I first investigated notes, we were up near 44000 open notes in the USA and going up. Now thanks to a bunch of people we're down to 22000 and trending down instead of up. We encourage people to make clear notes that aren't ambiguous as to what needs to be done and having an account makes us happier when we can ask for more details when something isn't clear, and also helps out weed out copyright infringements if they admit to an improper source.
12~ 4 months agocommentedgpserror
♦11,992
BTW please tell your friend that https://www.openstreetmap.org/note/5252170 is exactly the type of note we don't want to see. If they want to appeal a closure don't do this -- create an account and directly comment on the note.

Hi @gpserror and @Hypsometric, I am the one running @NeisAgent and @NeisBot for certain note-related actions, and I believe you are both already familiar with these accounts. In this case, was it okay for you that the bot auto-closed the surrounding notes, or would you prefer a different message or a different action instead? Thanks and best regards, Pascal
14~ 4 months agocommentedgpserror
♦11,992
IMHO it's fine, I support auto closing low quality notes in hopes that someone else would eventually notice the same issue and provide a higher quality note. However (and again nevermind) that anonymous was the note writer and technically should get a say in this, but they wish to remain anonymous and therefore shouldn't get to have a say on this. Yeah a new anonymous note that simply disparage the decision in a nearby note are not really helpful and should be closed, in my opinion in an ideal world anonymous notes are clear and concise. If they can't be clear and concise on what to have changed, they should create an account and be ready to field questions.

Hey, @pitscheplatsch. Thanks for neis(.*) (to include your future work :-D Looks like neisagent was expecting personal information, like names? In this case, I think "personal" is what flagged the note. So if I understand right, neisagent got some false positives here? But in this case, I think closing them was the right thing to do. Vague anonymous notes often go nowhere even when you ask for more info. When there is a response, it is usually a mess of confusing new notes as we see here.

You're welcome, @Hypsometric ... we'll see what happens next :) And thanks to you and @gpserror for the feedback. Yes, it seems the bot comment was not the best choice for classifying this note. The wording around "personal" was too broad and could be interpreted in a way I did not intend. However, I have stopped the bot for now, so at least one contributor will not be bothered anymore ;)

Aus veralteten Lufbildern legen örtliche Mapper dort neue Hinweise an, erzeugen also Datenmüll, z.B. note/5033101.

Thanks for understanding!

So, wie also weiter hier?

22~ 9 months agocommentedBobbi123
♦628

But technically, the note “EAT. restaurants closed in 2020.” has been handled. About survey, I think London (and England in general) lasks of mapper. There is so many (old) notes that need to be handled.

I agree that London needs more mappers. I was told very early on that people should only update the map if they have surveyed what is actually there (unless the change in use has multiple sources). Otherwise I could just have deleted the POI myself 2 years ago! I was told that the point of notes is to highlight things that are wrong so that it is clearer when areas need a resurvey. The map here is still not right so personally I think that the note should stay open until someone has surveyed what is there now.

Maybe it depends on local community :). In that case, it is a disband of a brand. Everyone can/could at least disused these stores (my POV and it is accepted by French community, but yeah we are in England so England community prevails).

Agree with TheUKHighStreet - don't just delete or mark as disused a restaurant just because the chain has closed down. Could well be that the franchisee continues on their own. If nothing else, the presence of a "wrong" POI signals that this part of the map needs resurvey. If nobody has noticed that *this* pub has closed, what does that say about the 20 businesses in the vicinity that do not happen to belong to a chain?
