Most, if not all addresses in Monroe are missing. I have just added around 100 of them, but I can't do this alone. Help would be appreciated.

I've actually been working exclusively on Monroe, adding addresses and additional information n such. Been working in small random areas around town. Most recent is around a roundabout on Country Crescent Boulevard. I do need help figuring out addresses in the neighborhood nearby the High school. I did as much as I could there. I appreciate the help, I'd like to focus more on detail work rather than look for addresses 😅

I recently found that Monroe has a GIS with address info (I think it’s in a utility map). That may be of use here.

1~ 3 days agoopenedloamlover2407Does any of this railroad spur exist at all? It does not appear on satellite imagery and the "MRA" reporting mark apparently is used by a real shortline in the Upper Peninsula. Curves are also shaped unrealistically and crudely.
2~ 3 days agocommenteddannmer
♦23,381
I would remove it, it's described as proposed railway but mapped as an operating line. It appears to go through multiple wetland areas which doesn't seem likely and has unrealistic curves. Even if it's an actual proposed line which seems unlikely, I don't think it's a best practice to map it

Yes but I can't figure out what road is under construction here 😅
9~ 22 days agocommentedpesticides
♦177
ICT_maps and dannmer are correct, this portion of 5th Ave NE used to be divided by a hardened median. The new road, at least as of last week, is not divided and is open up until the church parking lot. There is also a new bidirectional protected bike lane under construction on the east side of 5th, part of the east sidewalk is being rebuilt, and there is a new sidewalk on the west side.
10~ 22 days agocommentedpesticides

Fixed the road in https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/189056177. I'm not going to bother with the sidewalks and bike lane until construction is complete, as the situation is changing rapidly.

Edmonds to Kingston Ferry does not seem to connect with roads. Route always takes the long way around whereas the Seattle to Bainbridge ferry route does work.
2~ 1 year agocommentedkhevans
♦22
Did you resolve this? I noticed that you made an edit on the route and I tried the 3 mappers in iD and they now route via the Kingston-Edmonds ferry
3~ 1 year agocommentedJohn1946@
♦1
It's not resolved. In OSMAND when I started a track on Bainbridge Island to Kingston then to Edmonds via ferry it worked fine. As soon as I tried to extend the track to Lake Forest Park - Wa Hwy 522 the program re-routed back across the ferry to Bainbridge Island and took the BI ferry to Seattle to get to Lake Forest Park. The problem lies on the Edmonds ferry dock. There was a gap between the road on the dock and the road exiting the dock. I tried to connect the two road ends but it didn't solve the problem. I think someone with way more expertise than I should take a closer look. I just tried the track again in OSMAND and it still routes back to Bainbridge Isl. and Seattle.
4~ 1 year agocommentedkhevans
♦22
I opened an issue on the OsmAnd Github: https://github.com/osmandapp/OsmAnd/issues/22306 and it looks like their team will take a deeper look at the problem.
5~ 9 months agocommentedNatfoot
♦1,076
per this note. using my favorite router. if I move the start point beyond the Kingston Ferry Dock (in the water) it will route through Edmonds. but as soon as I place it on the Kingston dock it goes around. now after looking at the Kingston Dock it is the only one without reversible bridge decks leading to the ferry. I will say that if I place the end point in the water it will navigate to the water point through the Kingston Dock. So there is something more going on here.
6~ 9 months agocommentedNatfoot
♦1,076
When I say go around it does not use any of the ferries.
7~ 9 months agocommentedNatfoot
♦1,076

8~ 9 months agocommentedJbell4588
♦3
I tested current Comaps and OsmAnd web routing, placing points directly on the Edmonds and Kingston dock ways, routing points located close inland and offshore, and including multi-leg routes extending inland. I was unable to reproduce the ferry avoidance behavior. For context, Comaps uses a GraphHopper-based router, and OsmAnd web uses a OsmAnd specific routing backend. This suggests the issue may be resolved in current OSM data or may have been router-specific or version-dependent.
9~ 9 months agocommentedpwbriggs
♦1,034
Hmm. Does it also avoid all ferries if you replicate this experiment on another ferry line? What if you set the start location to a bridge-free island (like Vashon)? Maybe that will help narrow down the issue.

Thoughts on whether this path should be retagged as a sidewalk? It looks like a plain sidewalk when I look at it from Streetside. I've asked the last editor for their thoughts as a changeset comment but might as well ask the general community.

Looks like an MUT (multi-use trail) to me. Note the wider, asphalt surface and larger margin between the train and road bed as compared to the sidewalk on the other side. Also, look at the small diamond hazard sign intended for bicyclists, on the far side of the trail around https://osm.org/go/WIdcUecAm. I don't know why there is this trail here -- presumably some active transport route connection to the high school, but I don't see how it fits into the broader urban trail network -- however, it looks to me like it definitely isn't a normal sidewalk. I believe https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Natfoot does a great deal of work with trail networks around here, so you might consider messaging them for input.

From what I can remember this does look like a multi use path and has been tagged this way for 13 years. I see no reason to change it. it often separates more from the road than a simple sidewalk though the lower sections could be labeled as sidewalks. https://www.mapillary.com/app/index/natfoot?pKey=319944192897422

TIL. "larger margin between the train (*trail) and road bed as compared to the sidewalk on the other side" I'm not seeing this though, can you elaborate?
5~ 1 month agocommentedpwbriggs
♦1,034
Well, it's just a heuristic I used, not necessarily a requirement for a path to be considered an MUT. And, now that I'm looking back at it, I think maybe I was mistaken when looking at the aerial imagery the first time—the sidewalk on the west side *does* indeed seem to have a pretty decent margin of grass between the curb and sidewalk, comparable to the one on the east. But, somewhere around https://osm.org/go/WIdcVXOHk?m= the sidewalk moves right up to the curb to get around a retaining wall on the hill, temporarily eliminating that grass between the road and sidewalk—something that I think would be uncharacteristic of an MUT.

Interesting. Resolving as @WHS Contributor's question about why this is tagged as `cycleway` instead of `sidewalk` was resolved a while ago (bike signs, separated, not to mention nearly 8 foot wide and asphalt).

set the bridge on the rail line, that should fix any errors you are seeing. Eg. make sure that the layers on all offending lines are set or are at the right "height" with 0, or no layer set being on the ground. Also the road needs the max height added.

until the right of way is obliterated it can remain. if rail was still here that is railway=disused.. railway=abandoned is used when you can still tell track has been here. railway=razed is mostly used to let other mappers know that rail did exist here and not to trust other imagery. There are no rails, there is no right of way for trains, there is no evidence on the ground that there used to be rails here. If a train is here, something has gone SERIOUSLY wrong.

Video from one day ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvQYNwMPhS8 These aren't discrete trails that follow a previous railway like the Belt Line, West Toronto Rail Path, etc. This is an entirely new streetscape! There are no rails in the same way that there are no rails in the middle of Queens Quay any more. At what point do rails get removed from OSM? Do they stick around forever? Should I be mapping historical rail? The wiki page for railway=abandoned doesn't seem to describe this situation. railway=razed says "Avoid mapping former railways if it is impossible to determine the former route from the ground or aerial imagery. Consider using Open Historical Map instead to map former railways." Can I remove these?? Will people be angry at me for doing so? I'm genuinely trying to follow best practices.
14~ 3 months agocommentedNatfoot
♦1,076
@shnrinks99 for some of us looking for signs on the ground can simply be the right of way. if we can tell rail has been there then it often stays. I created this little bit of magic to keep me on track. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/United_States/Railroads#Life_Cycle I would say your leaning into railway=razed with this one and as outlined it is up to the mapper to decide to keep or not.
15~ 3 months agocommentedcswilson252
♦553
I’m contradicting my own previous comment with this, but IMO if the rails are present in most aerials but not on the ground (what seems to be the case here) they can be railway=razed safely. IMO In a few years, when most aerial providers update, and the rails and trackside infra (ballast, ties, etc) are no longer visible whatsoever there, it’s safe to delete the track entirely.. (but I’ve personally never been here, and have no idea if a right of way is still present on the ground)

Trains are controlled by a human and ATC supports the human in operating the train. Confusing but that is the way of the railroad industry. As Sky train is a closed system they don't have drivers or need for ATC and are instead automatically controlled by SelTrac.

suggest looking at the sky train wiki. instead of ATC a system called VCC is listed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkyTrain_(Vancouver)
7~ 3 months agocommentedUnarmored5156
♦40
I've done significant digging and have historical knowledge into both SkyTrain's control systems (ie VCC is short for Vehicle Control Computer, not the entire ATC [Automated Train Control] system as a whole) and also the OSM tagging for such automated trains, and I believe the following tagging would work best for SkyTrain: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:railway:cbtc railway:cbtc=IL If you look at the tracks, under and next to the LIM rail there's little wires that loop over every few dozen meters, those are the inductive signalling loops, thus the rationale for this tag. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:railway:ato railway:ato=uto because SkyTrain is a GoA4 system - heck it's one of the examples on the Wikipedia page for ATO: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_train_operation#Grades_of_automation railway:atc should *not* be added because ATC still implies a human operator according to both the OSM wiki and Wikipedia: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:railway:atc https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_train_control Despite Canada Line using different drive technology than SkyTrain, both systems still are GoA4 and use inductive loop signalling (it's much more visible on Canada Line) so the same tagging applies to it. The last major edit was reverted because it added railway:cbtc=uto which is a weird mishmash of the two tags and was definitely wrong. If the community agrees on this topic I could do the edit myself since it'd be pretty easy in JOSM.
8~ 3 months agocommentedakana932

yeah railway:cbtc=IL and railway:ato=uto seems reasonable to me. make sure when you're editing it in JOSM to not get the manual tracks at OMC1 into it. or canada line OMC. Thanks!

I can't figure out the correct way to edit this, but there is a mistake in the Flint Hills Trail here. The trail does not follow the old rail alignment between 5th and 6th Street. The correct trail (going south along 5th St) is already on the map, but the green state park outline does not fully follow it. There is also a separate designated route for horses along Withrow St from 4th St to Auburn Rd, vs. the paved path through town for bikes and hikers.

I am planning on adding the path to Lone Pine and Ormes, but with the tag informal=yes to show that it is not an official trail. This trail is well traveled and is on alltrails, so its quite well known. I am not considering mapping lesser used social trails. Considering also the access=no, but off trail travel in the NF isn't typically prohibited unless its a sensitive area. I'll leave this comment up for a bit before i go hike it for the gpx.

"directions" is a router problem. What app are you using?
3~ 4 months agocommentedNatfoot

The bike route relation on the way follows the City of Seattle's bike data set. https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/projects-and-programs/programs/bike-program/bike-web-map
4~ 4 months agocommentedNatfoot
♦1,076
To be clear the only thing we could do OSM wise is to remove the route relation. this would trigger routers to not use it as an "ideal" bike route. It may be added again as the city looks to indicate it as a bike route. Not that I agree with the way "bike routes" are done in the city.

1. Thanks for bringing this up, https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/lioracle! 2. As a biker I'd probably do a two-step left here (straight to far corner, loop on the sidewalk, wait for the light and straight again, essentially just using the crosswalks--just like a left turn box). Is there a reason that wouldn't work here? 3. I agree, this intersection and official recommended route is not ideal. Consider reaching out to SDOT to get a left-turn box actually painted or something? 4. Maybe we could do something funky with something like hazard=*, but that feels very much like tagging for the router. 5. We map what's "on the ground," avoiding editorial choices where possible. I don't think it would be appropriate to modify the relation from what's officially marked on the SDOT map and/or on-site signage. 6. If there's an obviously better route, then definitely contact SDOT to get it changed on their map.
8~ 4 months agocommentedlioracleNo there’s no light here or crosswalk. It is a left turn from a side street across both directions of basically highway speed traffic. There is an obviously better route: 30th Ave SW to SW city view street.
9~ 4 months agocommentedpwbriggs
♦1,034
mmm, that's not good. I haven't biked this intersection from that exact direction before-- would you basically follow Avalon north a little more and turn left on Spokane (or bump up onto the little bit of Alki trail and use the crosswalk to Spokane), which turns into 30th? I think it would be good to pester SDOT about this; I think their map is wrong. I'll keep this in mind to investigate sometime and see if I agree with your assessment of this intersection, in which case I'll join you in bothering SDOT until they at least update their official route map

♦1,076

looks like the down hill is signed. Can't find anything for the uphill in imagery, before or at the intersection. I added the bike route markers signs I could find.
13~ 4 months agocommentedlioracleThe route makes plenty of sense going in the opposite (downhill) direction (where it would be a right turn onto the side street). So that route relation shouldn’t be removed. But in the uphill (nw) direction it is wrong/dangerous/should be removed.
14~ 4 months agocommentedNatfoot
♦1,076

I tested this out with Komoot. The good news is it routes you up SW City View St when heading west. The bad news is it now routes you _down_ SW City View St when heading east, which isn't a practical maneuver. I added a direction to the relation mentioned in the previous comment to help out the router. Ultimately, there's not much more that can be done without cooperation from either SDOT or Komoot.

The addresses were imported from an older version of a government data set. Some of them have since been removed from it. I've deleted them, added a couple buildings, and moved the remaining addresses to the correct lots, which you can see on portlandmaps.com

But no tactile paving, so I think "no" is the accurate answer to the quest. There was some discussion about how to tag driveway-footway crossings recently, but as long as they're tagged currently I think it's fine to leave this as is and add tactile_paving=no to the crossing node.

Select one of the bike background layers, for example CycleMap which shows US Route 10 going parallel to HWY 29 as well as using it for a short distance. That doesn't exactly answer your questions but it does indicate that the planners wanted to keep bikes off of sections of 20.
