Other platforms at Edinburgh Waverley have a train stop position mapped - platform 18 doesn't seem to at the moment. Ref: https://gauss.whz.de/ptsa/details.html?region=gb&plole=286267

Node 835849776 seems originally to have been a disconnected point (no tags, and not part of any ways) -- now it is used as a stop position for trains -- all of the other EDB platforms have both a stop position and a platform mapped, but this one only has a stop position. I've tried to refine this section but might need to be refined further, also relations might need updating
32026-02-06 19:24commentedjayaddison
♦110
The updated layout reflects reality pretty well from my perspective. Also, the bicycle routing on osm.org does utilise the bikepath as expected. I'll add a name property to it. Edinburgh council has quiet route 10 annotated as an informal path on a map I found on their website -- so, not solely for cyclists. So I think that relation could stay on way 557972140 -- it is closed to vehicle traffic.

"Now part of the coffee shop next door" The place has gone or never existed. A user of Organic Maps application has reported that the POI was visible on the map (see snapshot date below), but was not found on the ground. OSM snapshot date: 2025-08-08T13:08:07Z POI has no name POI types: building-address #organicmaps ios
22026-01-13 20:14commentedjayaddison
♦110
Do you remember what the POI is/was - and has it been removed?
32026-01-31 18:02commentedosmuser63783
♦1,241
The note says: POI types: building-address So I think the user left this note on the address node (https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/3208861701) It doesn't make much sense to me to say this has been removed. So I think the note can probably just be resolved? Or #surveyme to find out what's going on
42026-02-01 12:36commentedempowermint
♦1
Hello! I am the user who reported this. The POI that doesn’t exist is the address node. The coffee shop next door at 274 Leith Walk extends into the space OSM indicates is 4 Balfour St. The door for number 4 physically exists, but it has been blocked off and its number removed.
52026-02-02 20:17commentedjayaddison
♦110
I think there could be various ways to indicate this - I'm thinking of setting entrance=no on the node, based on the related quote from the wiki: "It looks like an entrance, i.e. there is a door and possibly a housenumber displayed here, but it cannot be used to access the building (e.g. the door is permanently sealed). " From: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:entrance
62026-02-03 11:54commentedempowermint
♦1
Yes, seems like it would make sense to update it to an address node for 274 Leith Walk with `entrance=no`
72026-02-03 12:01commentedosmuser63783
♦1,241
I would keep the old address info but we can prefix it with disused: The 274 Leith Walk address really belongs to the entrance on the corner (not currently mapped)
82026-02-03 12:01commentedosmuser63783
♦1,241
Oh it is actually mapped, just obscured by the coffee symbol: https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/3206504852
92026-02-03 13:22commentedjayaddison
♦110
Adding disused to the housenumber field would leave a node with city, country and street - I wonder if some software might faultily interpret that as a point node describing a street?
102026-02-03 13:25commentedosmuser63783
♦1,241
I meant adding disused to all address fields. It effectively represents a disused address
112026-02-03 13:27commentedjayaddison
♦110
That makes sense to me. I've added the entrance=no tag so far -- I think setting all the addr fields disused seems sensible, so I'll go ahead and do that too.

The point-node for the defibrillator here appears to be at the top of the steps. It is tagged/mapped as level-zero -- the platform-level area below the lift and steps -- and from local knowledge I believe that's accurate. The British Heart Foundation still has a location here - there seem to be three units at ground floor, and in order from Northmost to Southmost, those are the Cube (vacant), Starbucks, and then the BHF.

Thanks! Both Starbucks and BHF give their addresses as The Cube (47 and 43a Leith Street, respectively) so I wonder if the name should be applied to the whole building
42025-12-06 19:49commentedjayaddison
♦110
I think that The Cube is currently the name for the entire building, and is when it was constructed. Whether it'll remain if The Cube (office management business) ceases to exist as a named entity there, and/or whether to include The Cube in the ground-level addresses.. I'm less sure.

From surveying the (already mapped) barrier here: it indicates that the road is closed to general access because it is a fire service road. I think it may make sense to split way 893915209 and to annotate that the short segment between the hotel loop and the east-west roadways beyond the barrier is not accessible to public vehicles.
22026-01-21 17:56commentedjayaddison
♦110
Changeset applied to designate the barriered road segment as for use by emergency vehicles, and not public vehicles: https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/177500147 See also some discussion in nearby note: #4921267 I am not 100% certain about the tagging of bicycle access that I applied, and whether that is sensible, so I plan to leave this note open for a while longer.
32026-01-28 20:26commentedjayaddison
♦110
I think the service road should be routable for cyclists; taking a longer road-based detour in this area if the route would otherwise follow this small segment of road wouldn't necessarily be a good idea for cyclists. However, the barrier (a lift gate, if I remember correctly) itself should perhaps be mapped as bicycle=dismount to indicate that you can't cycle through it but can easily dismount and push a bicycle around it. The upper half of the first kanji (symbol) of the three in the Chinese (zn) name of the Hing Sing supermarket seems is much simpler in the OSM name tag and in the older-looking, white signage on the building. The blue signage features a more-complex upper half for that symbol, and is on a blue background. Does it make a significant difference to the name? (I cannot read, and find it difficult to enter/lookup, Chinese kanji -- but will try if no-one else is able to inspect this for a while)
22026-01-28 13:34commentedjayaddison
♦110
After asking a friend: the difference is only that one name is written in traditional Chinese, and the other is written in simplified Chinese. Language codes zh-Hant and zh-Hans are available for those, respectively. Similar to the neighbouring Theatre Royal, the Playhouse also has two FHRS identifiers. I stopped into the ticket office to ask about on-site eateries, and The Boards is part of the Playhouse building in an upstairs area -- I think this is therefore the non-bar-related FHRS ID of the two. There is a separate bar in the main building from the main entrance, and I think that that must be the FHRS ID for the eatery with the word bar in the name.
22026-01-27 13:32commentedjayaddison
♦110
Taking another look at this, it still seems non-obvious. I think there are three places where food could be bought in the building: Little Picardy, which has a recent rating that mentions pizza, The Boards pizza restaurant, which I understand to be a separate part of the building (but perhaps shares the same kitchen?), and then the bar -- which I haven't visited and so I don't know whether it offers prepared food or only snacks/prepackaged food.

Does Boundary Bar really have two postcodes (EH6 and EH7)? And if so: can we find owner/press/authority sources to check those against? (source(s): FHODOT; web search)
22026-01-26 21:51commentedosmuser63783
♦1,241
That would be fitting: historically, when Leith and Edinburgh were separate, it was on the boundary. When the two had different licensing laws, one side of the pub would close earlier and people had to move over to the other side. But an EH7 postcode would need to go with a Crighton Place address, the EH6 postcode is the only one that makes sense for a Leith Walk address. Therefore I'm inclined to agree with FHRS here...
32026-01-26 22:19commentedGinaroZ
♦7,467
Royal Mail lists it as EH6 8SE https://www.royalmail.com/find-a-postcode (though strangely they don't have a 381, maybe that needs removed as I can't see another door)
42026-01-27 13:14commentedjayaddison

Mapping as EH6-only probably does seem simplest in that case then, despite the fun :) I thought I noticed two separate doors to the pub - but I didn't check the corresponding street number(s).

♦110
There is signage at eye-level near the left on the service road (way: 1393105120) leading into here from the West Approach Road that states that there are Parking Areas 2 and 3 somewhere in this vicinity. I'll try to check again soon. Note: parking in front of the hotel is certainly disallowed, so access:private seems tagged appropriately there. If this parking does still exist but is not for the general public, perhaps something similar could be sensible.
32026-01-16 18:19commentedChris NorthcottHi Jay, I'm actually on the staff for the building that controls these and am happy to supply more info on this complex if needed. Parking areas 2 and 3 are the shutters under the adjoining Exchange Crescent building to your right. Car Park 1 is next to the security lodge when you turn left. All 3 are staff car parks. The place where this mark sits is an ERVP on official building plans. Sheraton courtyard is public but drop off only, longer term parking is in the underground car park under Capital House and the Sheraton itself.
42026-01-16 18:20commentedChris NorthcottSorry, swapped right and left when describing directions in the above - 2 and 3 are to your left, 1 is to your right. I was picturing it coming down from the Sheraton in my head rather than West Approach. 😅
52026-01-20 11:03commentedjayaddison
♦110
Thanks Chris - I'll plan to visit the parking area to take a look and then to map those details. During my previous visit I thought I understood that the barrier to the South of the Sheraton entryway/plaza indicates that the roadway there is reserved for fire vehicles -- but looking at the map again I don't understand how vehicles could access Capital Square car park. (the reason I'm wondering about that is that I think it would be sensible to tag the roadways behind the barrier as for emergency vehicle access only, assuming that that is correct) What are RVP / ERVP?
62026-01-20 11:16commentedChris NorthcottEmergency Rendezvous points (meeting places in case of evacuation). It is sometimes used for vehicles but is not available to the public other than as pedestrian access. The barrier to the south of the Sheraton plaza is indeed for fire vehicles to access the lower levels of Capital House & AtriaOne, although regular access to the Capital Square car park is via the southwestern junction at 55.946612, -3.209000 and there is an underpass that goes past the EICC (55.946556, -3.209389) and AtriaOne (55.946500, -3.208485) loading bays before reaching the car park's entrance opposite the Sheraton loading bay (55.946532, -3.207848). There's also another one way access road that runs directly under Exchange Crescent that links from that junction to 55.947303, -3.208513 - Gmaps shows this road but OSM does not.
72026-01-20 11:17commentedChris NorthcottCorrection: upon closer inspection Gmaps only shows the pedestrian walkway above, but not the roadway underneath it.
82026-01-21 16:53commentedjayaddison
♦110
Ok, great - I think the rendezvous points should be mappable as assembly points: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:emergency%3Dassembly_point ...and that also makes sense about the underpass next to the EICC. So, one-way traffic in from Morrison Street, and then out towards the West Approach Road. I have gone ahead and tagged the barriered segment of road that is for use by fire vehicles as service=emergency_access and emergency=designated -- and also set access=no to indicate to data consumers that it's not routable for vehicles (although I have allowed pedestrian and bicycle routing - so that people can be routed by walking/wheeling from the hotel to the parking garage). I'm not sure exactly when I'll get around to visiting the parking lot (that this thread is originally about!) but I'll try to do that within the next week or two.

I believe that there is a defibrillator here, on the wall near to the covered bicycle parking that is already mapped. I took a photo but didn't include much of the surroundings and this is a medical feature so I'm hesitant about adding it without it being checked/confirmed first.

NB: there is a seamark building function of 'time_ball' that could be more-relevant/precise for the timeball on Flamsteed House than the current value of 'observation'. I think a seamark building type of 'observation' might indicate a place that the sea is observed _from_, while vice-versa a timeball is observed from the sea. Maybe sea observations do take place from Flamsteed House? But the time ball itself I think is primarily a visual signal for seafarers. The segregated cycleway here is drawn as starting west of Waverley Bridge, and it's not connected to the bridge, so it's not possible to join it when turning right from the bridge, is this correct? I think up to the junction with the bridge it's just paint? Need to check #surveyme
22025-12-06 19:12commentedjayaddison
♦110
From a (beginner-level) survey - it does look like it would be possible for a cyclist to turn right from Waverley Bridge northbound onto this cycleway in the direction of Princes Street eastbound -- with a small caution that there is a small island/divider between cycleway and main roadway just before the cyclist would pass the pedestrian crossing. Perhaps mapping that divider would help to clarify the routing to join the cycleway from the bridge, and the layout of the lanes.
32025-12-06 19:30commentedjayaddison
♦110
I did not think to check for any no-right-turn signs on Waverley Bridge facing towards Princes Street. Perhaps a right-turn there is prohibited. Ref also: https://drscottarthur.scot/2024/05/02/jenners-and-waverley-bridge-update/

There is a defibrillator located here inside a yellow casing, wall-mounted to the building to the right of the Saint John's Scotland building and garden, when you approach those from the opposite side of Saint John's Street. It is outside of the garden/fenced area. I plan to map it soon, and would like to confirm some details from the recommended tag keys on the OSM wiki first. I may attempt to photolink this too; I have an existing WikiPedia account, so perhaps Commons is the way to go, if such a photo would be within policy there.

♦110
This defibrillator is indeed on your right as you approach the building, but in fact is mounted on the outside side of the fence, not the wall of the adjacent building.

Superdrug has a presence inside the Pavers store location; I confirmed that today (2025-10-02) based on noticing Superdrug signage in the entranceway to Pavers. This may explain the fact that a Superdrug pharmacy in Wellgate (ID 9011868) appears to be missing according to: https://osm.mathmos.net/pharmacy/progress/DD/#16/56.4639/-2.9694 I'm not sure how to represent a business/presence contained within another point on the map.

Adding the #surveyme hashtag here, because this note was based on a pharmacy update note from there (as I remembered during the SurveyMe presentation during the #sotmeu2025 conference).

@jayaddison Are you sure you mean "Pavers" and not "Savers" for the store the pharmacy is in? I passed through here while at #sotmeu2025 and noticed a pharmacy counter within Savers, and afterwards I realised the green cross logo matched a that on a Superdrug store elsewhere.
42025-11-20 18:18commentedjayaddison
♦110
Weird - when I look at the map now, yes, I do think that it was the Savers store where I noticed the Superdrug signage. It definitely was a pharmacy/beauty store -- I went inside to check the confirm/ask their opening hours during the same visit. I'm not sure how I confused the two; it does seem overwhelmingly likely that I have done, though.

Perhaps it is expected/default that there is bicycle parking near venues near here.. however: I noticed that there are three series of bicycle stands - I think the first has 8 stands (16+ bikes) near the north side of the entrance path to the teahouse, one with 9 stands (18+ bikes) near the west entrance path and then one with 12 stands slightly to the south of the second set, nearest the Gerritsenbrug. If useful I could add these to the map. Source: survey, with french onion soup.
