The section shown here continuing SE towards Whincup Close & Whincup Avenue is actually the forecourts of two local businesses (a printer's and a joiner's). At the corner where Whincup Avenue and Whincup Close meet this area, there is clear signage saying "Private" and "No Through Road". Additionally, Commercial Yard bears several signs along its length saying "Private" and "No Through Road", as well as an official No Through Road sign. If you use Google Street View to "look" from the end of Commercial Yard, you can clearly see the obstacle - it is a yellow metal barrier. Hope this helps (I live locally) | |

The basic problem is that at the location of this marker there is *no road* at all! ...not even a service road, and certainly not Commercial Yard which does not stretch this far. OpenStreetMap is wrong to mark a road here. It is just a gap between two buildings, a forecourt area; there is no road. If no road was marked on the map at this place then we wouldn't need to be worrying about any barriers! The true extent of Commercial Yard can readily be verified using its USRN at the official database: https://www.findmystreet.co.uk/map?usrn=16602271 You can clearly see where Commercial Yard ends, and also that there's no connection between Commercial Yard and Whincup Avenue. If you zoom in and look closely you can even see the location of the barrier. The road layout is shown correctly on the online maps of: National Highways WebTRIS North Yorks Council online map Ordnance Survey online map RAC online map AA online map arcgis.com Google Maps Streetmap It is only OpenStreetMap which is showing Commercial Yard incorrectly; however unfortunately the error now seems to have propagated from OpenStretMap to Bing, and also (I suspect) to Tomtom (I'm still trying to find somebody with a Tomtom device to confirm this). The correct resolution for the issue would be for OpenStreetMap to remove the dog-leg extension of Commercial Yard (which was introduced in version 3) so that Commercial Yard gets shown in accordance with the official database, and no longer looks like it might provide a convenient "rat-run". If some kind experienced map editor could make the necessary change that would be wonderful. Otherwise I will have to learn how to do it myself which might take a while as I'm overloaded with medical matters at the moment :( | |

It's not present on OS OpenMap Local, which is not unusual - many names on OS OpenData StreetView were very historical and not current. The wiki is quite clear that notes should not be used in a way that is "useless to others": https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Notes I'm not necessarily saying this note is useless, but I don't think it's very useful to have on the map as it provides no additional information nor requests action (such as a survey request). If we keep notes open like this, you could theoretically add a note to every building saying "tracking future use". That being said, it is just a note, and while I and others have a goal of reducing the number of notes in the UK by resolving them and updating the map accordingly, the wiki is also clear that notes should not be a place for arguing or extended discussion, and as such I will not push my position any further as it does no use to either of us. Sometimes it's just "X has changed", recording details for when they can get back to a PC and can map it properly. Sometimes it is recording the state of something in a state of flux. In neither case does closing the note remotely help. Full disclosure - I'm from the DWG and we get complaints about people opening lots of notes without survey _and_ closing them (although probably more about the latter). If you have visited an area and find that a note (especially an old one) is no longer relevant then of course it makes sense to close it, but I suspect that this may not be the case here. | |
