In other maps, that is either Parliament Square or the whole eastern part from there to the lower Saint Margaret Street, it's all Saint Margaret Street and not Parliament Square. If the current situation is really correct (even the St. vs. Saint difference), a note=* tag should be added to this street segment and the eastern Parliament Square section, as it looks wrong and will help future mappers looking at this again. |

USRN 8400617 is one street: street_descriptor "ST MARGARET STREET", locality St James's, Westminster, class A, state Open, maintainable at public expense. One USRN, 7 geometry segments. In OSM that same USRN (ref:GB:usrn=8400617) currently sits on 11 ways under four names: five "St. Margaret Street" (A3212), this short segment "Saint Margaret Street" (A3212), three "Parliament Square" (A302), and two "New Palace Yard" service ways. So the register does put this segment on St Margaret Street rather than on a separate street, and the "Saint" spelling here is an OSM variant of the register's "ST MARGARET STREET". On the ground: I could not find a street name plate at the north end of this segment in street-level imagery. Leaving the note open rather than resolving, since renaming the other ways is a separate call, but this should answer the original question. If signage about the island is only on the island side of the road, then it should probably be applied to the island rather than the road. If there is signage on the outside of the road, then it should be applied to the road. If there is no signage then it is at least arguable whether it should be mapped at all, but if the name if the island is well known then sensible logic would be to map it to the island only but revert the road around it to its original name. | |

A brief look at old O/S maps eg 1965 show Charing cross as from maybe Spring gardens across to Northumberland Avenue, maybe dipping down Whitehall, withan old road configuration. So my gut feeling is the south line of the roundabout should be Charing Cross. or at least alt_name . Unless some one has a more definitive map or signs. | |

I found "Knowledge of London Points List Edition 6 July 2026" at https://content.tfl.gov.uk/knowledge-of-london-points-list.pdf. The phrase King Charles does NOT appear anywhere in it. So unless there is official evidence of some sort (not obtained from third party maps) the name should revert to Charing Cross for its entire circumference. Without signage, there might possibly be grounds for naming https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/111971259/ (ie, the traffic island not the highway around it) as King Charles I Island. I removed the ref tag in the current one that still exists, so the ref tag can be more easily resurveyed with StreetComplete and the likes. But feel free to comment here or edit the fire hydrant if you know that 260 or 261 was the correct one. The duplicate hydrant situation is resolved, so I'll mark the note as resolved.
